Anyone else still holding out some hope that this naming scheme is all just an elaborate joke by ATI?

They can't be this stupid, they just can't be...

i was confused at first but i get the naming scheme now

the performance justifies the 8 its got to much performance to be called 7

and it just allows them to charge more, perfect marketing

How does it have too much performance to be called the 6770? The 5770 just about tied the 4870. I see no reason why Barts XT coming close to the 5870 couldn't be called a 6770. This is a new series, so I see no reason why not to call it the 6770. Coming close to the 5870 and calling it the 6870 is stupid IMO. Naming it a 6770 and having a good price on it will just make it all that more attractive. Yet, in the end it is AMD's product and they can call it what they want to after all. Just have to know your stuff before you buy the product you want.

I have a 5770, but have no interest in Barts XT unless it priced around the GTX 460 ($200). I would love to upgrade, but I would rather put it towards Cayman XT and get more of a performance boost. I've gone form a 8800 GTS 512->4770 (HTPC)->5770. I really haven't had a HUGE jump in performance over the past few years. Unfortunately 50%-70% will not cut it for me.

Okay, so then wait for the Cayman XT or see if Barts XT is around $200, as some people are saying

It's really a whole bunch of silliness right now that people are complaining about a number.

And besides, why not wait and see if the performance really is where people say it is? All people have are Vantage and 3dMark06 numbers, which don't reflect real world (esp. DX11 titles) as well

i blame ATi. there is a lot they can do on 40nm. i have not been paying attention to the rumors lately but i think there will some nice performance improvements, even for just a year's time.
so they were supposed to have a new arch, but they cannot make that chip since TSMC failed. im not saying that the new arch would be great but when u have less than year to design something that is not your road map since your fab did not get their done u cannot expect much improvement staying in your die/tdp limits

He did this one with a newer driver:

    *snip*
since they have the fake unigine screenshot in their news and also call cayman xt the 6870 i really don't think we can trust those results at all. i mean, they basically summarized random stuff we discussed in the southern island rumours thread here at xs a month ago. these results aren't only quite old, some of them also have been proven fake, photoshopped, manipulated, whatever (e.g. unigine scores).

it seems it really doesn't make sense to post these rumours anymore as the different rumours don't match up at all. it's either a well planned attempt by amd to spot where information is leaked so they spread different specs all over the place or it's just that there aren't any leaks at all and all we're looking at are fakes.
even if some of the "leaks" are legit, they're drowned by all kinds of other contrary information so we end up confusing ourselves all over again and in the end we know as much as we did a month ago

i really hope this odyssey ends next week, on the 22nd. i'm fed up with the sheer endless 6770/6870/6970-"who's who" discussions

    ahhhhh, can't wait. DO WANT

Seems Barts is after GTX460 with higher performance and lower power draw. Cayman seems to be a beast when looking at the Vantage score* and power consumption figures posted in those slides. Wonder how they're going to manage producing Antilles with Cayman x2.

I agree 100% man, people are too hung up on the nameing stuff!
And comparing it to the rebranding that Nvidia did with the 8800/9800 is just silly reguardless, it is new architecture!

Most folks on here are pretty tech savy.
I'm still using a 4870, and wanting a new VC....

It all sounds pretty good to me, but I'm not upgrading from a 58xx series...
Alot remains to be seen, but if I can pick up a 6870 for <$250 that performs somewhere between a 5830 and a 5870 with lower power consumption I'll be a happy camper!

I have cash in hand and waiting for the card(s) release!

My biggest concern is 68xx drivers, but that should be worked out pretty quickly if history repeates itself...

Folks that really want something better than the 5870's should wait for the 69xx cards. Me personally, I won't pay more than $250 for a Video card...

But then again, I'm not a huge gamer, or at least not one that cares that much about FPS (I don't like shooters )...

Hmm, looking at the slides once more I saw the watermark (lol) but also the GTX450 which as far as I know (and I googled it too) does not exist (but there were numerous hits of the GTX450 before the launch of GTS450)... Fake slides?

Edit: The slides are dated before the GTS450 was released..

Very interesting slides. They have the feel of slides I have seen in product management meeting. The type of thing you would show to your AIBs so they know what to expect and when. Not the type of thing you would show at a dog and pony with jornos. They explain a number of the rumors regarding Juniper renaming and Barts being the new x8xx part. Even the errors like the rear port layout and the GTX450 make sense. If they are fakes the guy who made them is a genius.

sorry but i think you are quite optimistic 220$ for a card that will be faster then the current 350$ one is well...optimistic at best :p

DP 1.2 supports up to 4 1920x1200 displays off of a single port. So yes you can run 6 displays off the 6870. The slide set (see my previous post) shows 3 monitors being run from each of the 2 Mini Displayport connections.

I honestly don't care about the strategic shuffle, but I will get a bit cheesed off if Juniper gets renamed to 6770/6750. I could handle if it gets renamed to something like the 6670 or something, but a straight out rename... I dunno, I'm not going to like it.

AMD has always been quicker to a mature process and crossover point, so by the time intel gets their issues and volume sorted out, AMD won't be very far behind at all.
