    Asus R3E : 55-65 (Max ~70 C) with QPI ~ 1.488v

Even my old Asus P6T never had those horrible R3E NB/SB temps !

BTW : I've removed the stock heat pipe block before installing the Noctua NH-D14 and that "ear wax" was a nightmare to remove , then applied some AC MX-2 and temps went down by 8-10 degrees but it is still very high for my liking

Unfortunately the optional HS with fan would not go along with the Noctua , so I put the fan om the shorter HS :
That little fan isn't going to help much. You need to point a 120mm fan between your GPU and CPU cooler and push some cool air there, along with moving the hot air towards to your exhaust fan.

I don't get above 52-55 full load and idle just below 50 with this config. Nothing but the short stock NB heatsync.

    I have 2 questions concerning the R3E.

    1. I see from the photos of the R3E has the lotes cpu socket but mine has no "lotes" stamped on it.

    2. I seem to have a vga card issue. Occasionally I see a stripe of garbo about 1 inch thick across the screen on the desktop. I did not have any prob. with any 3d games & 3dmark. I lowered the cpu blk from 197mhz to 133mhz and the issue seems to be gone. Can this be a mb issue ?

    Thanks.

    2 c300 64 ssd for stripped raid 0
just installed the 2x 64 gb and used raid and achi in bios.
run tests and there so slow its scary.
using rampage 3 using onboard 6gb sata.
can any1 shed any light here.
even used diskpart align 1024 before makeing raid 0.

tried 64kb and 32kb when making raid dont change anything.
even used intel rapid response drivers same slow performance.

    Things to take into account:

The Giga has much bigger heatinks

The QPI doesn't really effect the NB, the QPI is a direct link between the CPU and RAM, the NB isn't used. The IOH voltages are what will effect the temperature of the NB, so you may well have higher IOH voltages on your R3E as well.

The thermal shutdown for the IOH/ICH is 100C, if yours isn't breaking past 70C, that isn't exactly a "horrible" temperature. Depends on what voltages you are using though.

Took the 960 out and installed my 920, this is where I'm at now. Everest and CPUz do not read the same vcore for whatever reason. The chip needed 1.392vcore load and 1.340v QPI/VTT bios on my UD7, but if Everest is correct It is about the same, IOH core was 1.140v and CPU PLL 1.140v on the UD7. I havent had the board long enough to do a lot of tweaking so it is not a fair to compare the 2 yet. Sorry for the large screenshot.

Well the rampage 3 6gb sata is a pile of crap.
formatted again and used normal sata not 6gb and get this.

They will both work great with your hardware. You may want to get the R3E because of its color scheme over the UD7's blue or you might get the UD7 because its cheaper.
What are you looking for in the boards? The Rampage III Extreme probably has more features and overclocking options.

So far I havent been able to get stable with similar voltages on this board as I was on the UD7, still tweaking though. For 24/7 Stability I think the Giga UD7 is hard to beat, this RIIE may be a better overclockers board though for the extreme user.

My Linx Run failed at 9 passes, now I have gone up on voltages and is still failing. There are some settings in the bios I need to play around with that may help stability.

I plan to overclock the 4.5GHz i7 960 24/7, or at least close to this clock.

The Gigabyte UD7 was very solid in my testing as well.
Should be a good 24/7 board.

I hope you got a better 960 than I did, mine is the bsod king. I've had a very hard time getting it stable at anything past 4.3, 4.4 requires a ton of voltage but it is a cool running chip so heat hasnt become a problem yet.

What cooling do you have? I have a Heatliller 3.0 and the EK R3E block on the same loop and my temperatures are about the same as yours. But my voltages are only 1.29 on the CPU and temps are a little higher .

CPU PLL is at 1.2 now, with no adverse effects aside from the fact that Asus Probe complains about it. If I can get 4.2 stable with around 1.3 vcore I'm stopping there. 6 cores at that speed will rip everything I do to shreds.

My only complaint about this board is the lack of coaxial optical sound output. I'm going to have to rethink my PC home theater setup because of this, or find an addon for it. Ridiculous not to have it onboard though imo.

I am using the Swiftech XT block, XSPC rx360 rad, mcp655. Im not watercooling the board but I have major fans on it, 2xscythe 133cfm's and an external house fan I use for stress testing.

Ah that explains it, I thought judging by your temps on the NB/SB you had a waterblock on it .

You think the 4.5GHz UD7 would not be able to get stable? That's it?

Here with the i7 960, the little I tried, I could get with a 4.2GHz with 1.272v (with Foxconn BR), did not even try more than that because I had to sell the BR. Now I'm looking for a new MB, and chosen by me would be R3E or UD7.

Here in Brazil the heat is too much. 25~30C degree ambient, the program LinX temperature reaches 85C @4.2GHz 1.272v. Complicated.

I think if your chip is capable of doing 4.5ghz the ud7 would be a great choice, I am still working on 4.5 with the RIIE but in all fairness I have only had the board 3 days now and I had a couple months to play with the UD7. I am also biased towards Gigabyte because I have had my best "stable" results with them, so my suggestion to you may not be fair to this board. Others with more experience using the RIIIE and other boards may have better input to help in your decision.

My first try using a DMM, it looks like Everest is right and CPUZ reads vcore wrong. With 1.44375v set in bios using the 50%LLC setting CPUZ reads load vcore at 1.432v and Everest and the DMM read at 1.401v. A new toy to play with, this could be fun.

Maybe a cpuz revision will fix this. That was the case also with cpuz back when i bought my R2E. However cpuz 1.54 reads right.

There is only a difference of $30 between the UD7 and the RE3, so I would get the RE3 for the extra features. However, if you are planning on doing water cooling then the UD7 comes with the NB water block. It also has the better NB air cooler. So if temps are an issue for you, then you may need to consider these things. On the flip side, you have ROG connect, PCIe disable switches for trouble shooting and benchmarking and a plethora of other features.
