    Hi all,

I managed to get my Rampage Formula X48 stable at 500 FSB with my Q9450 @4ghz. I'd been having tremendous trouble getting there, but came across this thread which pretty much got me over the line. Thank you!

I have the profile saved so i can run the Everest Cache and memory benchmark and post it up a little later on.

Here is a CPU-Z screen shot:

    And Validation:

Sure, itīs possible to run 500MHz FSB with a Quad, but at which risks...
For me voltages vNB 1.77v and VTT 1.78v are too much. This will kill your hardware... Take a look on your motherboard, how many LEDīs are red?

vNB 1.77v and VTT 1.78v are crazy voltages indeed. I used vNB 1.71v and VTT 1.6V(~1.5V by monitoring) for my 500 fsb run but I think that lower VTT is possible.

It doesn't list the Rampage as a qualified board though.

Do you know they work for a fact or just based on they "should work"?

Based on "should work". My G.SKILL F2-9600CL5D-4GBPI also work on the ASUS Rampage Formula but if you want to be really sure you could ask the G.SKILL Tech Support in the G.SKILL thread on XS or buy 2 kits of G.SKILL F2-8500CL5D-4GBTD.

I got myself 2 sets of the G.Skill Trident 1200MHz. Hope they work and i can get my CPU back running at 4.2GHz, cause these Reapers are crap and i can only run them at 800MHz and have my CPU running at 3.6GHz or i get BSODs loading into windows.

    2 Leds are red

I think your being a bit naive, what your implying is that i didn't know that i would be increasing the voltage past specifications and then some.? I know. The aim was to get 500mhz, i did, and i posted my results. The fact that i had to use insane amounts of voltage to get there is mute because of my goal. I had a number in mind and i did everything i could to reach that number.

If people don't have the money to replace destroyed hardware or don't wish to put their hardware in danger then it's advisable to not to 'Try this at home', but seeing as 500 FSB is extreme for a Core 2 quad i would have expected extreme settings not to come as such a surprise.

I ran LinX and Prime 95 and found that it was stable at those voltages, but decreasing the voltages a few clicks on either the FSB or the NB would result in an unstable environment. Unfortunatly not all chipsets are same, but i think it's been concluded that high voltages are required for such a high FSB with a quad core.

I found higher CPU voltages were required to get my E8400 to 4.7ghz. I don't remember the NB settings, but they were no where near as high. http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=449069

Ok, when you know the risks, then itīs fine

Thing is, i had my old 8600 running at 8x500Mhz with NB at 1.25v and 1.12v vFSB. With a Quad at 450Mhz you need voltages slightly higher then standard. But going near 500Mhz the increase is insane. The problem is the Bios, which is not optimized for such high FSB+Quad. How to make it better: take a look at Gigabyte UD3P and others...

The problem is not in bios, its about quads. Quads used to much more voltages than c2d. In other words you won't oc your quad without massive voltage.

It is but you're also right. You would still need more voltage to overclock the Quad to the same FSB but you wouldn't need that insane voltages anymore.

Sorry but you are wrong, massive voltage is required for high quad oc.

Where did you get that information? Did you ever run a Quad on your board?

I can tell you this. I know it's possible but you need a BIOS that can actually work with a 100ps skew difference between the CPU and the NB. The BIOS that we've got isn't build to overclock above FSB 450MHz. If it was than the CPU and NB Clock Skew would have been there since the very first BIOS revision.

ASUS added it to the BIOS but it's useless on high FSB because it's the BIOS that decides what voltage to use and there isn't much room to use higher voltage or it doesn't work anymore.

To give you an example. With my latest overclock profile the BIOS sets the CPU voltage on Auto to 1.214-1.226V idle or 1.27V in the BIOS. That's to low to run it stable at 4.05GHz on the ASUS Rampage Formula. It should be around 1.30V in the BIOS or something else should be changed in the BIOS so that it can actually work stable at 1.27V or changed in the BIOS that it can work with higher CPU Voltage without making it unstable after some time.

I know this could be possible and ASUS knows it too but doesn't want to take the time to do the research like they promised or doesn't want to give us a BIOS that can do that.

The reason why we don't see such a BIOS is probably also a bit because of me. I was so stupid to say that I don't really care if it can run at 4.5GHz stable because I would never use that for 24/7. I shouldn't have said that because now it doesn't matter what I say they know I won't run it at 4.5GHz 24/7 so they don't want to take the time to make such a BIOS.

You can still say that it isn't the BIOS but ask yourself the question how on earth Gigabyte and DFI manage to do that on a less expensive board?

You can say it's because of the P45 Chipset but have a look at the ASUS Maximus II Formula. It's a P45 board with exactly the same problems like we have or worse.

Okay so good news I was able to get the heart beat going again. Just had to let the board sit for a couple of days.

Also while I was waiting another set up RAM showed up.

So now I am running 8GB.

I had read that many were having issues before getting the board to run 4X2GB.

I literally pulled the sticks out of the box, dropped them in, booted up and things came up with out any issues.

    She is currently @.

So any advice, suggestions, recommendations on seeing how far I can push her?

It is not liking 500X8 but also I am not as well versed in OCing as others.

    I can get to 9X430 = 3.8GHZ :-/
