true i got m8s that had their 2nd and even 3rd Xbox360. Some bought a new one cause the old one died outside of warranty or cause it got banned.

Most of them sold their last 360 and got a PS3.

    @Xello
According to VGchartz the gap atm is 5mln consoles (40vs35). But i dont know how accurate their nrs are.

Stil dont understand how the Wii manages to outsell the 360 and PS3 on both the console and games.

cause the ps3/360 are for people ages 13 to 30 without a job, or basically highschool or college kids. and way overpriced for the bulk of the consumers.

the wii however is for kids who were 5, or your grandmother who things its the coolest thing since the microwave, or for parents who dont know how to bring the family together cause board games are boring. the market was just so vast, and its price was so much cheaper. i know MANY people who got it, then stopped playing it.

they made the same mistake sega did with its dreamcast...
way too expensive hardware and no exclusive killer game...

i mean really, how detached do those corporate nutjobs need to be from reality to launch a multi billion dollar gaming console project without making sure that there are actually good GAMES that you can play on it?

They will probably do great if they are willing to change their strategy (like Nintendo had to do). Whether they will actually make those changes is yet to be seen.

Nintendo realized how badly they were doing last generation, so they changed their ways and went back a bit more to their NES ways. After all, the NES was not really appreciated by the established gaming market back then, but it made a killing by changing the playing field.
They made games for people who had been left behind (as the industry basically moved to 3D only, or games with tons of cutscenes, or tons of buttons on controllers, or whatever else they focused on) or who haven't played much before, instead of focusing on horsepower and graphics in the struggle for the expensive and ever shrinking high-end market (though they have a few games for the latter groups, too). It's disruption at work.

You can read about disruption in The Innovator's Dilemma if you want to, it's quite interesting (and it even has a section on the computer and hard drive industries).

Wikipedia has something on it, too, it seems: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_technology

Of course, one must never underestimate the selling power of 2D Mario games (especially when considering how extremely rare that kind of game is today).

Generalisations aside, you are right about their market being way larger than the hardcore market. I hope you are not dismissing it entirely based on people you know not playing it anymore, as they still seem to have droves of active players.

it was actually a half finished thought, had to run out to a meeting so i just posted it. i know alot who still play, but i just seem to notice that it gathers dust way more than the other consoles do

I always thought sony made money off the games and that it was pretty much planned from the start.

Both Sony and Microsoft do this.
You sell the console at a loss to make a profit on the games and accessories.

Read an article that Sony is now making a profit per sold PS3. But not much its said to be single digit per console .

They are hoping to make double digits per console next year.

Not much but its better then a loss.

There's plenty of good games on the PS3 today Uncharted, Little Big, MGS4 and God of War to name a few. I sold my PS3 a while ago but I'm regretting it more and more. All of the good xbox exclusives with the exception of a couple titles here and there are on PC too and I'd just rather play them on PC. The only thing I really care about is Halo 3, and Alan Wake. The rest of the 360 stuff is either garbage or on PC, I can't say the same for the PS3. Plus you get a blu-ray player.

The tables have turned, sony really turned things around last year.

i thought that the dream cast died from having no copy protection and then at the same having burners and disks hit the same demographic that the console was aimed at

Actually, I think you're quite wrong there. The fact that PS3 sales heavily skewed the Blu-ray sales vs the sales of HD-DVD is one of the major reasons they were able to convince major studios to sign exclusive deals.

PS3 sales weren't stellar, but they did manage to move quite a few units, especially in the beginning. And those units counted in the overall sales of Blu-ray units (hell...that's about all we use the one I bought for). Without those sales, they may have lost that format war...and in the end that win is going to generate alot more profits for them that are going to make losses on unit sales be quite worth it.
