Would be about time. Intel is becoming too lazy with new developments and too greedy with pricing (see: 32nm 6 cores).
We could really use some innovation.

Intel extreme series cpus are always 1k. With Gulftown, you actually get better power consumption with 32nm and 50% more cores, so the best extreme series deal so far for both AMD and Intel. Too bad Intel is going to follow the trend of charging 1k+ for the fastest desktop processor.

On the other hand, if Intel were to release only unlocked gulftowns from henceforth and charged $300 for them (something that makes no sense from an economic standpoint in terms of fab investment and profit, as well as premium on innovation and performance), two things will happen:

1. AMD would take Intel to court
2. AMD would cease to exist as a cpu-making business (and Intel may have to be split up)

Cheaper gulftown comes in the form of sandybridge. It'll be here soon. AMD is pricing aggressively ONLY because their highend is only able to compete with Intel's mainstream so it'll make no sense to charge a premium. They'll have no problem charging a premium if they could. I'm sure their marketing department has done all the math.

im in the same boat, 940 with DDR2, so i picked up a 1055T (its sitll in the box cause im waiting on a bios), so for me its a great upgrade to hold me off for probably 1-2 years. and then ill upgrade to the BD when AM3+ boards are out (and hopefully quad channel RAM?!?!, sorry i got a little lost on if thats actually coming to the consumer market)

either way, AM3 cpu in AM2+ now, and waiting for matured BD with lower DDR3 prices and better boards is the way i think to go

and i expect to see a significant boost in clocks, i run my 940 at 3.3ghz 24/7 at stock volts, keeping CnQ on. so with 1055T i expect to have in games about 3.8ghz using turbo, while still being in the same power envelope as my 940, but also have 2 extra cores if anything gets to use it (physx maybe?)

Didn't you know before you picked one up? Or the pricing was too irresistible? lol
