Gigabyte finally debuts its HD 5870 Super Overclock card

Gigabyte has this week officially launched the fastest card in its Super Overclock Series, a customized, and, of course, factory-overclocked, Radeon HD 5870. The speedy HD 5870 SOC features an Ultra Durable VGA design with a 2oz copper PCB, five NEC Proadlizer film capacitors that provide more stable power, voltage read points, and a dual-slot fansink boasting two inclined fans and four copper heatpipes that's supposed to keep the card 13 degrees (Celsius) cooler than the reference solution.

Spec wise, Gigabyte's card comes with 1600 Stream Processors, a 950 MHz core clock (850 MHz stock), a 256-bit memory interface, 1GB of GDDR5 VRAM @ 5000 MHz (4800 MHz), DirectX 11 and CrossFireX support, and dual DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort outputs.......

Yeah, probably. I think Cypress yields didn't go up with time as predicted.

Want to see benchmarks for this card, always loved Gigabyte's products and this looks like a real winner.

    FIIIINALLY!
some cards can clock above 1ghz on air... they should have made two versions, one clocked to 950 and one clocked to 1ghz imo :/

11% faster... so it should be about as fast as a gtx480?
how much will it cost though?
if gtx480 cards really end up at 499$... and this ends up at 449$ then... its an ok deal... but if it costs more, then it makes more sense to buy a gtx480, which is still faster and can actually be overclocked another 10% or more...

i have a feeling this card will cost more than 449, so it wont really be worth it i think... and there arent many 5870s that cant clock to 1ghz on air with a good heatsink, so in the end, i doubt these cards will clock higher than ref cards... maybe a bit because they come with a better heatsink... meh

449 for a 1ghz card would have been better, but 449 or more for a 950mhz card which basically every 5870 can do... :/
well, im looking forward to the price and reviews

50$ more and you get a gtx480 thats faster and then overclocks up to 18% on top of that... plus better tesselation perf, plus likely perf bumps with future drivers...

at this rate id bet i skip the 5000 series, slight increases for high price costs, and no real price dropping in sight. might aswell wait for the 6000 cards which will probably be only a little stronger on paper, but in dx11 games much stronger. and with a much better 40nm process, or possibly a medium sized card on the 28nm process, prices should be fair or power consumption should be awesome

Well, if it overclocks slightly better due to better components and/or cherry-picking, it will sell. People won't mind spending money if it gets them them a WR or two using ATI cards. It might not be able to beat the GTX480, but there's fierce competition in getting the highest scores with ATI cards as well And let's not forget the people that don't overclock or are just misinformed. If they want the best single GPU ATI card money can buy, this will be it.

I'm shocked as well. 2gb would have made this card so much better. Especially for a highend GPU.

Meh, in the world of hardware you can keep on waiting and waiting. It won't get you anywhere. There's always something new just around the corner. For people who are looking for a card now, it might be a nice choice. And let's not forget hardly everyone is already using a GT200/HD48xx card. For people with an older card, it can be a huge upgrade already.

I agree, not everyone is using a GT200 or an RV770 based card at the moment. I upgraded from a GeForce 7800GT to a Radeon 5850 a little under 2 months ago. I can tell you, that was a massive leap in performance .

Nice looking card. I have to agree with much Saaya said. Depends on the price. Now that Fermi has actually been seen sold in the US for $499, this card needs to be less, just like all the other suped up 5870s. My hope is that Fermi will stay at the $500 mark so AMD will be forced to drop their overpriced cards.
The little air system that could.

plus half a gigabyte more VRAM...

Both this and Lightning are far from an "answer to GTX480" IMHO. The "answer" to GTX480 is the 5870 or the 5970. To be honest for there to be an answer, there needs to be a question as well, and the first GF100's can't ask strong questions

Supposed to have a sample here soon to do a review. They had some delays with review samples I was told, could order one from Newegg and it'd get here faster Will be doing an air/ln2 OC session and a photo teardown
