I think Fermi is a very robust design and definitely too ambitious for 40nm, but should really begin to shine with higher clock speed and 28nm, so yes Nvidia will not release an 5000 series killer, but they will have an architecture future proof and to them that is the difference between staying strong or not in the market.

AFAIK the 480sp decision was given fairly late, I doubt the GTX 480 will have its parts fused. I think we'll be able to make it 512SP.
As for the GTX 470, I think from the start it was designed to have 448SP so the SPs are prolly fused

Well at the moment theres not a "real" DX11 game yet, so if you have yourself between a GTX295 - GTX 260 or ATi 4870X2 - 4870, theres no need to jump the bandwagon in my opinion, since most games we getting are crap ports thanks to consoles. But if you're planning to jump the boat I would consider a ATi over Nvidia right now (maybe this could change after friday but my hopes are really low).
ATi has some advantages over Fermi right now which are:
Pros
- Low consumption
- Better temperatures
- Cost less (though they are a bit overpriced)
- Eyfinity capable with ONE card
Cons
- Driver Team sucks (although they are making some progress with 10.2 & 10.3)
- Size (5870 & 5970 size is ridiculous imo)
Fermi (Based of what we seen so far)
Pros
- Size (they have the same size of past gen or even smaller)
- "Better" performance than ATi offerings (not by much though)
- Nice drivers support team
Cons
- Power consumption
- Temperatures
- Vision Surround requires SLI
- Price (they are not bad for previous products releases but still more than competition)
If Fermi ends up to be a flop is nvidia and their "Big GPU chip is the way" bulltheory fault, the evidence is more than clear, I even think that the integration CPUGPU has to do with this, why not make TESLA products with this feature since the people who buy these kind of products are the ones that are going to benefit for such features, not the gaming crowd. I remember posting that I was smelling the fermi was going to be the new R600 and some claimed I was pessimistic, but every time news about fermi surfaces has more negatives things than positive...

That just seem like the perfect rumor for nVidia & fans to spread, so that those who are thinking of buying the 480 now has a reason to really click the "purchase" button thinking there's more to this card then there really is...
Anyway what was the last GFX card that allowed additional core unlocks from BIOS or other means?
Personally power consumption isn't a priority concern for me, my systems pretty much all consume copious amounts of power and go to S3 sleep when not in use.
If one was worried deeply about heat dump and power consumption getting involved in threads regarding high end equipment of any sort at XS is really the wrong place to be.
Its almost akin to complaining about the noise and fuel consumption of a top fuel dragster and wondering why it can't be as quiet and economic as a honda civic or even a corvette.
I'll reserve my judgement until after reliable results are up....

I dont think its that bad, the FX series sucked so bad. ATi handed nVidia their arse for a while those times. The key for the GTX 4xx is going to be pricing, if nvidia can stay competitive with their pricing, they should do really good, besides the enthusiast crowd, nVidia has more name power than ATi in the general publics eyes, around here is so-cal atleast 90% of my customers know nvidia, they dont know what ati is, when i offer it, they always turn it down based on name, and go for nvidia only because they have had an nvidia card or the name is more familiar.

Weren't their drivers responsible for the vast majority of Vista crashes? I've seen no evidence ever that supports the theory that somehow nv's drivers are vastly superior. The only thing i've seen is that some prefer nv's control panel, and they wave the profile flag as much as possible.
Unigine Heaven 2.0 is leaked, Is anyone with dx11 interested in the changes?

Where are DX11 GTX400 benchmark leaks ffs?! Wheres BC2, AvP, Metro, Dirt 2, Battleforge at different resolutions and AA/AF levels.

I'm wondering if it'll be Friday that we can order ones with Saturday delivery or USPS Priority for Saturday, or no stock till Monday (29th)...
I do believe you are correct.
As far as the 480 being potentially unlockable that would be pretty cool but not literally of course. I'd expect you'd need water / LN2 to tame it with the current heatsink with the full 512sp if the heat rumors are to be believed ( 92C in anything outside of furmark would be scary ) There is a reason the 5870 / 5970 are as long as they are ( cooling space )
I wish that vision surround would have been a hardware solution like eyefinity and not software. I'd bet a single 480 would do well with 3 displays for various reasons. The fact 2 will be required though is unfortunate. 3 1080p TN panels can be had for the price of a single high end display which offers way more desktop and gaming space for the money making 3 monitor gaming not nearly as far fetched today as it was years ago when it was matrox only territory and ungodly expensive ( I remember seeing my first 3x 19" 1280x1024 lcd setup years ago running MS flight sim and thinking that was completely insane heheh... )
Didn't they say it wouldnt be until April 6 that we'd see stock by the way or has this changed? I know they are launching at PAX but I do believe it was mentioned that it will take a week or so for availability ( due to shipping and such )
