Remember that there will come a next generation of consoles, and Sony&Microsoft obviously will want to use the best cards for their consoles. So both AMD and Nvidia need to stay in great shape for the next console iteration, to produce the fastest solutions possible at the time PS4 and stuff are released.

All those don't change fact that even a single 5870 can be overkill most of the time if you don't use Eyefinity, though.
