Project Gene - Lian Li PC-A71F

    Heya!

Allright I've been planning my new rig for a few months now and I figured that I could start a worklog about it (I like writing stuff and taking pics) and now would be a good time to start it . And also good way to make my first post in these forums after a while of lurking . Oh and also. This is my first time ever watercooling my pc

Well might as well get started with the components.

    Hardware
    CPU: Intel i7 920 D0
    GPU: Sapphire HD5870 1GB
    Motherboard: Asus P6T Deluxe
    RAM: 6GB OCZ Platinum 2000mhz 9-9-9-30
Hardrives: 2x Seagate Barracuda 7200.11 500GB (old parts)
PSU: Corsair HX620W (RMA'd, might get a HX650W as replacement)
Sound card: Asus xonar D2X 7.1
Case: Lian Li PC-A71F + new side panel with plexiglass + new top panel with 2x 120mm fan grills + 5,25" hardrive rack.
Other: Scythe Kaze Server, 2x Revoltec 30cm cathodes
Fans: A bit mixed... read about this below

    Watercooling:

    CPU: Watercool HK Rev. 3
GPU: EK Water blocks EK-FC5870 Acetal
Motherboard: None , ran out of money.
    Pump: Swiftech MCP655
Reservoir: EK Water blocks Multioption 250 rev.2 (and anti-cyclon thingy)
Radiators: Swiftech MCR220, MCR220 QP stack and Thermochill PA120.3
Tube: Masterkleer 1/2" clear (Blue UV) with blue UV coils
Liquid: Distiller water with a silver coil

    Project phases:

    None yet

    Other stuff:
This workstation project is a part of a little longer project that consists of the workstation, new desk and new speakers. Eventually also planning on switching my current 23" and 19" LCD's to a 3x 23" set.

The workstation got its name from the speakers which will be 2x Genelec 6010A and 5040A subwoofer. So I shortened it to Gene and though it would make a cool name for the project . And here's an work-in-progress model of the desk which I will build next year

Making a double post to move my text from the first post here. Easier to just keep the first post clean and link the phases of the log there so better to have this in a separate post :

I have ordered most of the stuff and I am expecting most of them to arrive this starting week. Although the package with motherboard, cpu and gpu will arrive whenever the gpu is available. ocUK should be getting a batch of those gpu's this week according to their website and customer support but dunno if there's enough for me . Preordered just last week and a lot of other ppl have ordered theirs before me.

But still gotta make some decisions. There are really 2 things bugging me. First is the fans. I have ordered 2x 800rpm gentle typhoons and 5x800rpm slip streams. One thing I'm a bit annoyed about is that atleast in the front of the case I'd love to have fans with transparent blades because I'm planning on putting leds there and transparent blade would just work much better for that. However it seems like all the transparent fans suck . I was gonna get the blue noiseblocker fans (Blacksilent XL1 and XK1) because they were both in 120mm and 140mm size but after reading martins fan test, it doesnt seem like such a smart choice. And then also the fact that now I've read that the slip streams are poor too. Originally I though those were good and planned on using them for vertical use and GT's for horizontal use but now it looks like I should had just bought GT's for everything. . It also doesnt make me any happier that I have already went over my budget and cant buy more GT's for whole system.

And then the 2nd thing I'm wondering about. Originally I was going to put the 240mm swiftechs on top of the case (since the top cover has ready slots for them) and the PA120.3 vertically between the harddrive rack and motherboard. However in the last minute I though that screw it. I'll put the PA120.3 up to the top cover, get rid of the HD rack, put the swifttechs there, buy a Lian Li HD rack for the 5,25" slots and put the reservoir in the middle of the case. (Originally I was planning on a XSPC reservoir in 5,25" but I changed my mind).

So now I have to cut a 3rd hole to the top cover so it can fit the PA120.3 and it shouldnt be a problem, already got some diamond discs to dremel. But I need to think how to cover the top. At first I was going to put aluminum dust filters there but bleh, they dont look that good. Then I found the bitspower grill and I'm really considering ordering it. However I feel a bit hesitant of putting that grill there on top of the cover as I might rather like just putting a mesh below the cover so that it would only cover the holes. But I couldnt find any mesh with that small size and round holes. I did just send an email to one company here in Finland asking them if they have any or could make some and how much it would cost. But still I'm quite confused with which option to go for. Ideas anyone?

Oh and a last thing for today. As a "part of the project", I finally got a tripod for my DSLR camera so I can take some good pics yay . My room has quite bad light and when you add that to my bad photography skills = disaster. But already tested the stand and daaamn its awesome. I dont think I'll ever take a picture again without it.

ps. I have a habit of writing huge walls of text like I just did. Forgive me. Once I get enough stuff to get started on the project, I'll try to include more pics instead of text

    edit:
Forgot to write it up there. But I want to add some of the stuff I've regretted with this project. Well most of all is my poor planning. I started planning this really 2 months ago but still I've managed to do it badly. What I mostly mean with this, is that after ordering some stuff, I got a new idea and needed other stuff, and so on. And because of this I've had to make few orders to the same shop while I could had just done it with one order if I had planned it better >_<.

And the 2nd is that I ordered a lot of stuff from aquatuning. I managed to read that aquatuning thread only after I had ordered a lot of stuff from there and really regret it . Although I would had probably had to order some stuff from there which I couldnt get elsewhere and I got a discount when I ordered the water blocks. But still, from now on I'll try to order more from other not-shady stores

I also thought I had planned everything well when I started my build. Couldn't have been more wrong. But you learn from your mistakes, at least I hope so for my part

Good luck with your build and waiting to see some photos with that new tripod, wish I had one of those as well.

Jeez i really love the desk your planning to build!

    looks awsome!

I actually had to change my case !!!
I added a rad, I changed the tubbing, the fans...
costed me hundreds € ! coulda gotten better GPU or a SSD instead!
but hell, like woffen said, I learned a lot... this time again

    good luck mate!

Thanks . I really hate my current desk as it doesnt really give much room and I dont really have any good support for my hands (the support in my chair doesnt fit well there). That's why I really love these desks with the curve because they let you place your hand on the desk and give muuuch more space.

The desk isnt finished yet though and gonna take a while before I can start designing it again. Already sold my old pc and now my only pc is a really small laptop with like uff, 13" display I think. The bottom part of the desk is pretty much final. I designed the PC part exactly for the lian li case so that when I place the case on it, the cables should be behind that small panel and the plexi of the case will be totally visible ^^. And the back and top of the case have about 10cm room for airflow.

I just send an email to aquatuning to cancel a lot of parts. Luckily atleast in EU i can return the stuff inside 14days of buying them as long as I havent used them, and actually i havent even received them yet. So gonna take my money back of the fittings, some extra tube that I dont need, that XSPC reservoir that isnt included in my plans anymore, 1 scythe slip stream.

I'm gonna cancel using the compression fittings and just use barbs (already got those... ) and buy the koolance fittings for them (they look cool). Normally I'd feel bad about returning stuff to a shop but in aquatunings case.... Couldnt care less

Does anyone have any ideas of the fans? Still trying to figure out what to do. Thinking of just getting gentle typhoon 1150rpm for everything (except the 140mm fans ofc..). Might considering painting those blue to match the color theme, but not quite sure how hard it is to detach and attach the blades.

edit: Also accepting ideas of the airflow . Not sure whether to put the fans in top cover to push inside or pull outside.... and also just got an email that I've been sent a new PSU to replace the one I RMA'd .

edit2: Was just browsing chilledpc and found this mesh. Now I guess that solves my problem about "where to get some mesh" but I still gotta think whether to use that or buy the bitspower grill. HMMMM. And also wondering if i need any dust filters and which would be good.

edit3: I have some plans for the original side panel. They will result either in A)Awesome looking side panel or B)Totally ruined side panel.

You do seem to write walls of text Is that just to keep your fingers warum up there in Finland?

Airflow.. i'd make it pull out, cause having an extra inlet of warm air in the top of the case seams really stupid Warm air will rise, it will have nowhere to go, so the case will be warm.

About the fans, i dont know how diffucult it is to remove the blades, but hey, fans aren't soo expensive, and with a good tutorial from internet, you shouldn't farck up more than 1.

    cheers

Hehe, perhaps . I actually noticed yesterday at work that typing fast actually keeps fingers a bit warmer .

And about airflow. Yeahh. I have a bit mixed thoughs with it. Having it push air inside would be good because it would suck cool air from outside the case though the radiator, but then only exhaust would be PSU and the one fan in back panel.. So that would mean 6 fans pushing air in and just 2 fans pulling air out :S.

But then again if I make those fans pull air out, that would mean 5 fans pulling air out and 3 fans pushing air in, but the radiator would be using warm air from inside the case... So still gotta think about it, has anyone done any tests about which is better?

Oh and I think decided on how I'll cut the top cover. I will make a hole similar to this and then just attach the radiator with 4 screws (Think 4 is enough to hold the 360 rad there?):

and then put mesh under it. Or the other choice would just be this.. Not sure which one would be better...

DHL tried to deliver one package from ocUK yesterday, the one with the sound card, harddrive rack and dvd-rom. Looks like I'm gonna have to pick up all the DHL packages from their office because they deliver them only during my work time. But gotta love it how fast they actually deliver the stuff. I ordered this order on thursday and already yesterday they tried the delivery

edit: I'm gonna use the mesh . Found this and I like it.

Been doing this all evening and finally got it into a version that I can show. I dont really have any skills with designing software so it sucks quite a lot but either, this is what I had in mind for the original side panel:

The "waves" could probably be a bit longer and the whole shape a bit smaller. Blue would be blue transparent plexiglass and white would be clear plexiglass. Also thinking that could write "Gene" in the left bottom corner in a 45degree angle.

How does it look? I think I'd have to draw the templates by hand because I really cant make a good one in autocad(or any other program) so I'm more worried about actually drawing it on the panel than cutting it . Although cutting wont be easy either but with enough time I should be able to pull it off.. Perhaps.

Gonna go pick up the new PSU and a few packages tomorrow. Will receive atleast the sound card and thermochill PA120.3. I guess I can then take my first pics . Also of the stuff that I already have, so all the blocks and so on.

edit: just got an idea, could get one 280mm radiator more there. And possibly make a hole in the bottom and put a fan there for more intake. Hmm. My budget might not allow those though.

I decided to ditch that DNA idea. Once I have the case, I'll just put some paper there on the panel and draw it by hand.

But anyway, picked up those boxes today from DHL and took some pics finally. Didnt make it in time to go pick up the PSU from post because I got stuck in a shop trying to figure out christmas presents for my family >_<

Boxes! (2 new and 1 that I've already have ready for a while)

I digged up the sleeves and heatshrink but couldnt find the 2nd heatshrink and sleeving (had 2 sizes) so I just emptied the whole box there... And then realized that both sizes were wrapped together

I love bubblewrap. The big airbags were a bit hard to squeeze broken but damn did they make a BANG!

"I know you wanna pop us"

All the parts I have at the moment.

    Memory

    Sound card

    EK Block for HD5870

    From behind

    HK block for CPU

    Ass

    Pump

    Pump again

Swifttech stack. Notice the bent fins . I guess it happened during delivery. Luckily those are easy to straighten.

    Twins

And the big daddy PA120.3. Lovely quality, not a single fin that's even a little bit bent!

    Mmmm

Not quite sure when exactly will I actually start putting it all together. Family coming over this weekend and then already on wednesday leaving to them for christmas. So I guess I'll get started after christmas then. Although hopefully will receive the case atleast on tuesday so I could paint it at my parents house. Quite a lot better space there for the painting than in my small house.

PS. Sorry for all the bad focus in a lot of pics. I'm still quite a noob with my camera. And damn I wish I had a macro lens...

    Good stuff, Elpy!

Can't wait to see the process of drawing on paper and cutting. Will you be using transfer paper, cutting the panel with the paper taped solidly in place or some other method?
I'm in the middle of an idea of putting artwork on a side panel myself and looking for some ideas.

I'm in the middle of an idea of putting artwork on a side panel myself and looking for some ideas.

    Oh! and
Thanks. I havent really though much about the drawing yet. I might not even try it otherwise but since I already bought a panel that comes with a plex, it's gonna be pretty much "success or total failure"-project because even if I ruin it... I still have the other panel . But at first will most likely just put some normal paper there and try to get the design drawn... Probably gonna have to do a lot of erasing and drawing again before I get it well done ^^". I'm not really an artistic person. And then might just cut the paper into templates, draw the design to the case with those and cut. Cutting will be done with dremel so.... it will be interesting... and slow...

But either way because of that stuff it has the lowest priority on my list ^^, just some extra use for the original panel.

Picked up the new PSU today and also a package with some sleeving tools, scythe kaze server, leds and wire and molex plugs. Got another HX620W . I was hoping for a HX650W because that shop isnt selling HX620W anymore and HX650W has a blue text instead of red... But I guess they still had some <.<... Well I can live with it.

Also checked the tracking log for case and it seems that GLS tried to deliver it today... surprise! I wasnt home at 13:30 . But from my understanding GLS will now take it over to Itella and I can pick it up from there. Maybe even tomorrow if I'm lucky

Gonna keep this update short but awesome news! First of all. I got the case this morning . Luckily GLS tried a 2nd delivery just like 15min before I went to work

And more goods news! ocUK just got looots of sapphire HD5870 in stock, so they'll probably send my gpu, mobo and cpu today .

But yeah parents coming over this weekend so next update next week . Will post pics of the case then and hopefully I'll already have some more detailed plans for the case and how I'm gonna stuff everything inside it. And then I also gotta make the last orders for fittings, reservoir, mesh, some aluminum, moar leds, moar sleeving (blue), probably some gentle typhoons and if I counted right I should have some extra money to spend on something nice ^_^. Just gotta decide what.. Would had liked to get the NB/SB/mosfet blocks but dont think I have quite enough for that . I wonder if I should just postpone this until my next salary

I already got one idea for the case. Gonna try to make some aluminum bracket for the top radiator so I can mount it to the top cover without actually screwing it directly to the cover. This way there wont be any ugly screws or rivets in the top cover.

Dont know how hot the P6T gets but it might be a good idea to have it under water too. You have enough rad for it ; ) Also, an Intel X25 G2 would be a good boost for you =)
Very nice parts so far, looking forward to the updates!

Yeah I was originally planning on buying a SSD but then ended up using that money for watercooling. Going to get one sometime next year though, probably after I buy the genelecs. And most likely going to buy the motherboard blocks next month.

Forgot to take pics of the case when it was still all together but either way, here's how it looks atm:

Someone mentioned this in the Lian Li case thread in liquid cooling section and it is indeed right, the usb/speaker thingy hole IS bigger in these new cases so as you can see, the top cover I bought doesnt fit this case without modding. I'm not really too interested of starting to cut a bigger hole there so I might just directly cut the fan holes to the original cover. Not sure yet

Still cant really do much because I'm missing a lot of stuff. Need to make an order to chilled pc to get stuff and aluminum sheet(surprisingly it's cheaper there than one local store here) so I can start making the holder for the 360mm rad. Also gotta go buy a rivet tool and I need to get a dremel from my dad when I'm going there for christmas.

I also though that bleh those rads arent enough so I'm gonna buy a EK 240mm rad that I'll stack with the thermochill. I started planning on putting the top radiators sideways just like in TJ07 because that would let them suck fresh air... but had to cancel it because this case just doesnt have enough room that way. The chassis and top cover gets in the way so the hole wouldnt be big enough for 120mm fans, even if i cut the motherboard tray a bit smaller, it still wouldnt fit well enough.

But all in all, I'm very pleased with the case. Very good quality and looks good. Although I gotta say, if I could choose again.. I'd probably get the TJ07 as having the radiators sideways really seems handy.

Oh and yea I think I'll have to get the 150 multioption res afterall. I forgot that HD5870 is quite lengthy card so it might get a bit too tight with the 250 multioption. Argh I cant wait to have all the tools and rest of the stuff so I can finally do somethingggg!!!

Then I still need to decide on the fittings. I'd really wanna go with compression fittings since they look good... but daamn why are they so expensive . Basicly could ditch the EK 240mm radiator idea and get the fittings with that money... but bleh I want the radiator <.<.. Sigh I guess I still have a lot of planning to do also.

I remember when I did my first build I was so amped I just wanted everything done right now. <,< I went through 12 gallons of distilled water just with reworking my loops. So I understand the pain you are going through. I even poured water all over my 295, of course... oddly enough I didn't even blink.

if I'll do that to my HD5870... I'll get a heart attack!

Update. I'm thinking of changing my plan with the top cover. Originally I was going to just cut a hole there and put normal mesh to cover it. But then I saw this. Now I'm thinking that I might cut that kind of holes to the top cover. I think it would match the air intake holes in the front door pretty well. And Nashaz is using the same kind of rad in his Lian Li and it looks nice. But ofc I would directly cut this to the cover because I want the "grill" to be on the same level with the cover, if you know what I mean. And of course no screws.

I was thinking that easiest way would probably be to drill holes with slightly bigger drill bit to both sides of the cover and then cut 2 straight lines between the holes with a dremel. A lot of work but if I draw a accurate template on masking tape, it should work okay. And of course if i mess it up or something, I can just cut the big hole and use a grill or mesh. Good thing about this would be that I'd save the 16£ that the mesh costs

edit: I'm feeling suuuuper hesitant about cutting the holes the way I mentioned above... Damn

hehehe with the power off you just wait for it to dry XD

I can't do intricate work with my dremil I have poor hand eye coordination so I just make the large square wholes. This time I plan on getting a whole saw to make it super easy.

    Allright final decisions closing in.

The top hole will have modders mesh covering it. I ended up picking this choice because its quite fool-proof and looks good.

I will buy an additional swiftech MCR220 so in the end here's the total list of cooling power:
    3x MCR220
    1x PA120.3

I hope I can still run all this fine in 1 loop ^^".

Fittings will be bitspower black sparkle. Freaking expensive but bleh... I'll try to forget the price. Some booze should do it.

Fans will all be gentle typhoon 1150rpm's. So there will be total 9 of those. 3 on the front panel. 5 on the top panel and 1 in the back. These will all be controlled by scythe kaze server semi mode. I'll probably have them run around 500-800rpm when PC is idle. Only sad thing is that I'm all out of money so I gotta order these next month . Meanwhile will use the 5 slip streams I have and the Lian Li fans that I got with the case.

Sleeving will be mix of blue and black.
Res will be EK Multioption 150.

Gonna order about half of the last parts on thursday. And the chilled PC order with rest whenever I get my money back from the order I canceled from aquatuning. (Hopefully in these few days)

I'm gonna start working on the top cover hole this week at my parents and hopefully next week I can start putting the hole thing together.

    For now. Merry Christmas xtreme!

PS: My next WC Project will be in like 10 years. I'm getting distressed about the amount of money I'm burning in this...

edit: Project might be delayed to next month. I might also buy the motherboard blocks now and then simply wont have the money for fittings until next month :/. Im not really too interested of putting it together now and then taking apart next month again for updates.

Booya. Project delayed now. It was going to be delayed anyway since I decided not to put it together until I have all the stuff I want in it, which also means the motherboard blocks and now especially because I got a Wii-craze after trying it for the first time in my life and went ahead and bought one .

But yeah anyway on 10th of January I'm gonna order rest of the stuff, then build it together and take lots of pics and then just post the whole thing in one go. Cya then

Well the project is still on a pause because I still gotta make an order to chilled PC before I have all required to start working on the case but got some other pics to show.

I think I'll also forget getting a fullboard block for NB/SN/Mosfets. It's so damn expensive so I will most likely just get a single block that can be attached to the original heatsink. 4x cheaper and wont kill the warranty.

PS. Sorry for super crap quality. Forgot the tripod to car so just took those with hand...

For your information, the T-71103 top has the newer IO panel size. Just got it from the US, it's all fine (too bad it's very impossible to find it everywhere else in the world)

Cool. Shame that its too late for me now but I dont really mind , Gonna cut the original anyway.

I've already made a few new threads in liquid cooling section and I feel bad about starting a new one so I'll just ask here

Been thinking about the loop order, trying to make it look clean. Basicly I have 2 choices here
    1) Res -> Pump -> GPU -> CPU -> NB -> PA120.3 -> MCR220 stack -> res
    2) Res -> Pump -> GPU -> PA120.3 -> CPU -> NB -> MCR220 stack -> res

From what I've understod, the order shouldnt matter right? I'm currently considering the choice 2) because it might let met make the loop clean but though I'd ask for confirmation first since this is my first WC ever...

edit: Or 3) I could make the loop go otherway around and make it res -> pump -> MCR220 stack -> PA120.3 -> CPU -> GPU -> NB -> Res. This would let CPU be first block in the loop, but cause longer tubing.
