Wrong the ATI HD 5850/70 was launch on September 23rd, 2009 and for at least one month neweg had the cards listed every day. After that the cards (except in the prebuild boxes) were hardly available till about week or two ago.Considering it was only in the past week or two that I was even able to find a 5870 in stock at an online store (because of production issues at TMSC), I'm not too worried about "missing the boat".
Also lets not forget about the HD 5750/70, there are plenty of them for sale since the launch date and more people will buy the lower priced product.
Of course in case you're not ready for upgrade or buying ONLY NVIDIA you're not missing the boat.
I highly doubt ATI would price the cards without making any profit specially since there isn't any competition. Could they made more money if the yields were higher sure, but small profit is still a profit, just go ask about it the NVIDIA ONLY partners that don't have any cards for sale.I highly doubt ATi even made any money on the very few 5870's released during October and November because of the 50% yield rate TMSC was still having through late November on the .40nm process.
Not introducing the card on the market when the product was ready, would be the most stupid decision AMD ever made. AMD needs to increase the market share and most people who bought any of the HD 5*** cards are not going to be replacing them with Fermi when finally available. And I still think it was a poor business move to release the card when they did, specifically because of the horrible yields and all the product their 3rd party card manufacturers are now stuck with on store shelves. Not much business sense to completely devalue your entire 4xxx product line by releasing a FAR faster card... when low yields prevent you from making money on it in addition to it not even being available to buy.
The top end of the HD 4*** cards was HD 4870 x2, they're all sold out. The NVDIA cards are sold out since they're EOL and the NVIDIA buyers have no other option, I'm sure NVIDIA didn't plan for such situation for the Christmas market time.Newegg only has tons of HD4xxx cards in stock, with only a few of those models sold out. The same cannot be said for their stocks of nVidia cards since HALF of the GTX2xx models are sold out.
