Some one buying this high end obviously has a 24" monitor. So they are dealing with 1920*1200 resolution. And if you were not lucky in the first place, you also have the big ass monitor bezel to deal with. That means, buying 2 more or possibly 3 more monitors at 24" resolution. Thats 500 dollars right there(not good monitors obviously). Then to get playable frame rates at those settings, it requires someone getting a 5970, which is another 650 dollars. Thats 1150 dollars.
Only to realize when directx 11 titles come out or any new games and the better looking old games(like crysis), your computer is still too slow to run the thingrs at better setting, you wish you waited for monitors designed for eyefinity with smaller bezels, and you need to upgrade again. Or you turn down settings so much in games that the benefit of eyefinity becomes null and void because the main monitor your looking at looks starkly worse because of the decreased setting.
I think directx eyefinity won't be ready for primetime until monitors come out with smaller bezels that were designed for the technology(so you don't need to rebuy the whole set when they do come out) and the cards that support them get faster so we can play modern games, not past games.
I think even an AMD fan can believe the above.
