Which manufacturer is going to be ready with 5850/5870 blocks?

I think it just comes down to personal preference. I have done both and I like to think I am somewhat experienced with water cooling (considering I have done around 10 different cards this year alone) and I still check the fit to make sure the PCB is not warped and I have good contact. To me, this is no different than using a backplate for your CPU? No, but I bet more do than not. For those saying they don't use standoffs on their GPU's, do you skip the backplate on your CPU also? If so, why? Just curious.

i fully agree. i have a preference to not use standoffs, or ill modify the card and remove them as needed, as i like to really get into the design of the block and see where i can get more performance from it. almost every block i buy i end up touching more than a manufacturer would like me too.

i also use backplates on my cpu cause i really crank the pressure out of those blocks. i actually bent the hold down plate on my Fusion for AM2+ mobo, probably cause its about 1/8" thick at the thinnest part, and i never realized it lost pressure over time from being permanently bent and stretched. so i flipped the bracket over and tried again.

Guys. I have PA120.3, Fusion v2 and Swiftech NBMAX in my loop. Which 5870 wb i should buy? Nickel, acetal, copper or what? Which is the best?

Both blocks and rad are copper. Use what you like, copper or nickel is fine. Acrylic is fine, doesn't like alcohols, Acetal is tougher.

So, my EK block is keeping my temps under load at 37c with water temp at 21c. This is with the voltage cranked to 1.35v and an overclock of 1125/1298:



So close to 21K I can taste it.

Three temps reported are within a couple degrees of each other, you can see them in the SS. I am not sure if any of the three are considered the VDDC's, but feeling the parts of the card that is not covered those are all cool, so I would guess it does a pretty good job.

@Waterflex - not if you are using a FC block.

So I opened my blocks today and one of them has no thermal tape for the vrm's. The thicker tape is missing, does anyone know the specification? Because I can't wait for some to ship from the other side of Europe.

Any news regarding the terrible VDDC temps on the first batch?
I'm still getting terrible temps on them, while all other blocks achieve 50º under load the Koolance gets 85º-90º than the card throttle back to 40A to reduce temps.

if you want to see coolant than you need acrylic (plexi) cover.

nickel is corrosion resistant. so best for you is plexi nickel combo

I do not see the reason nor technical argument.
acrylic and acetal are both plastic. acetal is less prone to cracking and is more durable.
disadvantage is that is not transparent.

nevertheless heat exchange takes place between copper and core (VRM's,...), therefore copper is needed to provide best performance.
lots of discussion about that can be found on this forum.

so acrylic and nickel are very nice combination IMO. just make sure you find nice coolant.
