I think it just comes down to personal preference. I have done both and I like to think I am somewhat experienced with water cooling (considering I have done around 10 different cards this year alone) and I still check the fit to make sure the PCB is not warped and I have good contact. To me, this is no different than using a backplate for your CPU? No, but I bet more do than not. For those saying they don't use standoffs on their GPU's, do you skip the backplate on your CPU also? If so, why? Just curious.
