The amount of fail this decision brings to the table is only comparable to me buying a DDR3 mobo with DDR2 RAM (~350 rigs under my belt of +10 1337ness).

I have hardcore PC gaming buddies who were playing cs 1.6 until COD4 came out, they were looking forward to MW2.

A few of them had their rigs upgraded/brand new ones queued just for that game. Not that it would not run well on a duallie+9800/4850 seeing how well cod4 performed on older rigs PLUS MW2 for consoles is rendered in a glorious 600p res! Source: pcgameshardware.

I even have a few construction workers-stereotype buddies (go to work high/get high at work/drink every weekend type) who fiended out HARD on COD4.

All of the above did it solely for the MP.

So IW, I hope you realize that cutting off dedicated servers is akin to the fail of dropping your solar scorcher in a mad brahmin level in fallout 2 and then realizing you did not have a savegame right after you found the scorcher. Pretty fail.

And my gaming name is Fa1lomenon. So? At least I have a belt of +10 1337ness. You, on the other hand, are a self-proclaimed "N00b of 0C!" with interest in "Guirats". Now let me show you my pokemons:

The image actually is of myself holding the window cutout from the case mod I did back in '05 for one of my buddies.

Stop threadcrapping please, this is an MW2 topic and not "what a random guy on the internet with extremely unoriginal nickname thinks of some other random guy's on the internet avatar". /end rant.

What the dev's often fail to realize is that most of the people who pirate a game would NOT have bought it in the first place. And while single-player component usually gets cracked quicker than an Ogre saying "ooga", multiplayer is what really lets keep the cracked/pirated versions out of the main "enjoyment field" due to mandatory online cdkey verification etc.

Oh wait, this is exactly what IW failed at.

i dont think that its the devs that care its more the publisher, the devs only care if its leaked.

i agree, but that doesn't change the fact that they fail at it and blame piracy for everything. so in the end WE, the gamers, will lose...
there were and are so many discussions on the inet concerning this topic and if a publisher really cared they would have found out the obvious as well. but obviously, they don't care about these figures.

they will always keep "piracy" as a reason for bad sales figures or to excuse bad console ports. so increasing the amount of pirated games by "rage-pirating" the game due to this mw2-multiplayer-crap hurts future pc game development even further.
the people who are in authority at publishers don't care about such things. they just see the numbers of pirated copies and tell the developers "screw the pc users, they'll pirate our game anyways". the people in charge are business administrators, not gamers or developers. and without a publisher most developers/game studios are nothing (except they have enough money to do everything on their own...) so devs always depend on their publisher...

Do you really think the majority of "mainstream" gamers come on forums to read about how companies are ripping us off? No, they buy games based on the name. It's a CoD game, so it will sell.

biggest disappointment of the year. all the hype, all the good things that i have heard about this game just went completely down the drain after hearing about this. IW you fail! with any luck this might set a standard of what not to do....thats really the only possitive i can see from this! it really is a shame tho..this game had so much potential.....my 2.5 cents.

As the news is going fast, the number of signatures will only increase, which will prove them that a lot of money will be lost for that! Money that they could have spent on making a proper multiplayer!

It will sell initially yes as a majority of users are casual gamers who know little of the effect of no dedicated server files, but I reckon the follow up sales after initial launch (which continued on for a long period for CoD4) will dry up.

If as most of us expect the matchmaking system does not work out for the PC then word of mouth will spread this fact and the later buyers will be put off. They will see the CoD4 and 5 servers still heavily populated and think why spend $60 on an inferior product that my friends aren't playing?

It's a multiplayer oriented game, so a lot will still be aware.
Sure, initial sales might be high, but they will surely not make many millions of sales like with previous games.

We're screwed either way. If it's not pirated and nobody buys it, they will just use that as an excuse to leave the PC market anyway.

Although this is just wishful thinking, what may become of this is that IW would integrate IW.net to allow user to use steam's dedicated servers. But we will see.

If IW.net ended up being thousands of great dedicated servers... thats one thing... and then also running self-owned servers APPROVED by IW.net... it would work out great

IW.net could be great...if it maintains approved (non cracked) dedicated servers and then also keeps an array of 100% vanilla servers only for match making... then they can keep pcs happy and keep the casual crowd happy.

But from the sounds of it it's not that.

They should have done a battlefield verification system... master server you're always connected to, proving you're legit... and then let all the servers under that server be "approved" by IW.net individually.

Sort of like killing floor having all it's maps approved/denied for multiplayer.

PC gaming has been taking a big hit in the action games category fro many years no and its starting to get frustrating. Unless its an MMO or an RTS it pretty much is bland as for PC. I don't mind if they take something to console but the playability on PC should not lose its integrity. Mechwarrior is gonna blow b/c of like this.

I just HAVE to put my .02 in here. This is a huge disappointment to me. IT is bad enough that these days very few games are actually build for the PC and enthusiast players anymore, but this takes it one step too far. I thoroughly enjoyed CoD4, and still play promod a few nights a week. Even though CoD4 was a multi-platform release, it still succedded in the competitive community because od dedicated server support, mod tools etc. For MW2, I am convinced there is no hope.

This is a trend that is all too common these days. Allow me to cite a few examples:

1.) FEAR: Awesome PC FPS\Moderately sized, although dedicated competitive community - FEAR 2 - lackluster console port that was dead before it began

2.) MOH:AA - "THE" PC based FPS that started the WW2 flurry - MOH:Airborne - The WORST console port I have ever seen. (Also released with NO DEDICATED SERVER SUPPORT, although was added months later)

3.) UNREAL Tournament - need I say more? This was the game that got me into caffeine powered late night gaming sessions - Unreal 3 - Dumbed down update to one of the greatest FPS's of all time. And sadly, despite all the free weekend plays on steam, STILL dead most of the time.

The list goes on and on people. I stopped playing CSS for CoD4, because I wanted something fresh. I've been waiting for MW2, and I was excited about what I saw, but now I won't even buy it. I buy for MP, not SP. Without Dedi support it is worthless to leagues, clans etc.

Is there hope? I'm not so sure anymore. For the competitive community all I can think of that will save is is the following:

1.) Battlefield Bad Company 2 - If DICE were wise they would take advantage of MW2 mistakes. Frostbite looks good!

2.) Battlefield 3- 2011? Maybe? It's in development, and that's all we know.

3.) A New Counterstrike - Valve dropping a bomb on us and announcing a new CS would be amazing, but the likelihood of failure on that is huge. most CS 1.6 players consider CSS a failure, so imagine a whole new game!

Ok, I'm done. Maybe I should hop on the MMO bandwagon like everyone else is doing nowadays. SO FRUSTRATING!
