It all depends on when next gen consoles are released. The problem here is that PC hardware is so far ahead of console hardware, that multiplatform games have to be developed to a target hw much less capable than it could if they were PC only (and Crysis is PC only...). Even if PC games (or versions) are usually played at higher resolutions, it's a long time now since PC GPUs can handle console games at Full HD.
As it's nowadays, only games that are really profitable to develope for PC only are multiplayer games (very problematic to hack and pirate), and those tend to target very low hardware requirements because its usefulness (and therefore value) grows exponentially with number of users. So probably the next jump in hw utilization will be when the next gen consoles come to the market.
+1. Like if those poor game programers had time to be lazy...
Well, the most reliable piece of info about the new 5800 performance that we have right now is they're going to be "more than 2 TFLOPS" (applied to both HD5850 and HD5870, so supposedly both are going to be 2+ TFLOPS). Given that last generation was the 1 TFLOP gen (to be exact, 1 TFLOP HD4850, 1.2 TFLOPS HD4870, and 1.36 TFLOPS HD4890), that should give a pretty good idea of... theoretical compute/shader power (at least +100% against HD4850, at least ~50% against HD4890, for the HD5850, more for the HD5870). Actual real world performance remains to be seen, though...

Well they certainly havent said anything about "HD5870 will leave your mouth open in awe!!!" so it certainly is within the realm of possibilities. However both ATI and Nvidias launches reek of the last one so I do not expect anything awe inspiring, just a good performance jump.
IDK Dainas,
I'm feeling like both incoming generations are going to be g80s![]()

I smell bull. 300k is a ridiculous amount of cards to have available at launch, especially that high end. Its really too much. Thats how much consoles alot of companies have available at launch and they sell way better than any high end videocard and produced much further ahead of time. Even worse is the notion of 100,000 hemlock cards. Thats 100k of the super high end. Thats crazy unbelievable, as there is no way AMD could move that many as it is still a 600 dollar card.
Not only that 40nm is still not the greatest manufacturing process. If it was, we would have seen alot more 4770s, which could of sold way more if they were more readily available.
Without a source it even smells worse, especially coming from a known ATI fan.
Why makes so many cards when no matter how good the reviews are, alot of people are going to stay with the 4870 or whatever card they have. If you look at this even further, that would mean their has to be atleast 1million r8xx cards because if they have 400k of the high end, there has to be atleast a million more for the mainstream parts.

Where did I say there was no source...
Look around a little and you will find it.
I said there were different interpretations.
I agree that the original intrepretation seems off.
Seeing how the first batch of RV740 was supposedly in the ~30-40k range and how quick they ran out, I don't think those numbers are completely BS.
Edit- Also yields on some Evergreen GPUs are better than 60%, RV740 was around 20-25%.
Reedit- +50million Hollywood GPUs shipped in less than 3 years.

Awesome, then I'm so totally looking forward to it!!That would almost 100% accurately translate to a 100% performance increase for me! As the 4870 has nearly double the trannies of a 3870, and a 100% perf. increase, it should be pretty much the same, but since a lot of the trannies will go for the increase in ROP's (from 16 to 32, apparently), it might just be a 90% increase instead of 100% increase..

Updated List of Video Card GPU Voodoopower Ratings!!!!!
Sure 50 million hollywould units have shipped, but that was on mature process and on a chip they already had great yeilds on since its based on the flipper already found in the gamecube but 2x the performance. This thing is brand spanking new.
Additionally and most importantly, there is room for 50 million chips because it is a gaming console and the demand is there, and customers are already lined up.
I doubt AMD needs to have 300k of its highend at launch, when there is no buzz or demand for that number. The 4770 was a mainstream, low priced part so the demand was there since this is likely the highest volume market, and even here they only made 40k. I doubt they need 300k radeon 5870 because if they had that many, they would have been making these cards for months, and should have released it late july or august. They would have made a killing catching the summer market and having no competion for the rest of the year. Now they are releasing when school just starting. Its not the best time.
I doubt AMD going to be able to generate the buzz to those who might listen since their marketing department is garbage, and they only have a month before the card is released.

hmm
http://www.techpowerup.com/102477/Gr...n_Q2_2009.htmlJon Peddie Research (JPR) covering the state of graphics add-in board market reveals that Q2 2009 has been a better quarter than Q1, but still worse compared to last year. This quarter, around 16.81 million units were shipped
with amd's 35% of 16.81 million units for a quarter
and i think that 300k was first order of all new cards but the x2

I can't believe there have been almost no leaks as far as specs/performance goes. Besides wild speculation, things are eerily silent.
The 48xx launch was like this too... basically people were still believing 480SP instead of 800SP for quite some time and nothing was confirmed until retailers started selling cards and thus we had leaks and it became obvious that it was 800SP's
^ so we could even get 2000SP's+?
