yeah thats what those gt300 rumors are all about, and thats why having even 1 working gt300 prototype will be very very valuable for nvidia, cause as long as they have something, anything, that looks tasty and they can hold in front of their customers or potential customers, at least some people will freak out and wait for it, even if its 6 months away
i remember how some people said they wouldnt upgrade their vga cause they are waiting for larrabee, and that was when it was just anounced![]()
Thing is, if we're talking about what NVIDIA will do when the RV870 launches, they don't even have to ask people to wait 6 months or even close to that. Just a few months later (no more than four I'd say) they'll have their cards out in quantity. This is a very different situation from the past where NVIDIA lead the way, but by no means is this NVIDIA's R600. Yes it's late, but it's not deal-breaking late, like some people want to claim:
The difference between DX10.1 and this is NVIDIA was trying to ignore DX10.1. A lot of the optimizations available with it worked on their DX10 hardware, and the only reason I can think of to add support with 40nm chips was because there was no reason not to. Is DX11 even more late than DX10.1 parts? I don't know, does a few months equate to longer than a year plus?

What was the reason for NOT using it on the GT200? I mean, DX10.1 had been out for quite some time when they launched... And four months is pretty bad actually. Especially when those for months consist of Win7 launch AND Christmas season... But of course, they could always say "but we've got CUDA and PhysX so it doesn't matter if loose in everything else.."

This thread makes me
I really like how you are all convinced that nVidia are a long way off releasing their DirectX11 GPU and that ATi will release in September.
IMHO ATi might be before nVidia......but only by a matter of weeks.. 1 month at most. ATi will arrive in late October/Early November, nVidia will arrive Mid November/Early December.
Stock shortages for BOTH vendors will persist until Mid Jan 2010.

The thing is that everyone's claims that ATI will beat NVIDIA to market by quite a bit are at least substantiated by a number of rumours, and we've seen working silicon from ATI. If NVIDIA is only a matter of weeks behind, I'd bet my life savings that they'd have at least gotten a few reporters together behind closed doors to show something.

Ummm did you miss both conference calls?
AMD said they will have cards out BY Windows 7 launch.
Nvidia had to side-step any sort of statement.
I am more amused by you, and some others, being convinced that this ~480mm2 40nm chip is more than on-schedule.
Less than a week ago, CJ confirmed that G300 hasn't been taped-out for a long time.

Gentlemen,
All I am saying is that.... remember a certain "Can O' Whoop Ass" comment which was uttered by a certain "Founder and CEO" prior to the GT200 launch?
Now... didn't that can explode into the face of the CEO who said that he would open this?
Wouldn't it be wise to assume that he would have learned from his lesson this time around, and instead will act differently and instead go for tactics of "Shock and Awe"
We have a saying here that "Empty barrels make the most noise, but those full of bounty do not.."
ATi, could either fail to impress (HD2900/3800) OR "do a G80", we just do not know...

The first tape-out of the GT300 was back in January/Feb of 2009. And nVidia had a far more refined tape-out which was announced in Santa Clara, CA in May, 2009.
I see absolutely no reason why the GT300 cards will not be ready by Q4 2009 considering their first tape out was over 7 months ago.
While in the past couple years, I've been quite skeptical regarding nVidia's recent claims about their forthcoming chips. But this time seems quite different and brings back memories of how quiet nVidia was about the G80.
Typically companies who run their mouths all the time about their upcoming "groundbreaking" GPU/CPU.... it almost always ends in disaster. (FX series of nVidia cards).
I'm even becoming quite concerned for ATI/AMD because they're by far the more vocal of the two GPU manufacturers.
I have a feeling nVidia is going to release a beast of a card later this year.

#1- Tape-outs aren't "announced" they are leaked/rumored/speculated on from sources.
Also I feel the complete opposite.
AMD/ATi is confident but not overly confident like they acted previously, R600/Phenom, or like Nvidia after G80.
On the flip-side Nvidia, while being somewhat silent about their new GPU, have been very vocal on numerous other projects which will be merged into this new GPU. I have a feeling Nvidia is spread too thin and is working on far too many different projects/products and needs to reapply focus on their core products.
Edit- Not exactly what I would like to use for "proof" but Charlie is thinking the same.
