You see, just performance ignoring the price isn't the way to go. If you're interested in that, get 4x 4890.
Pushing a flexible chip most people can get their hands on means more optimisations and higher performance after all. So ATI didn't really lose there.
Making extremely huge cores with insane performance is good ofc, but for 99% of people that's like using LN2 to cool their CPUs. Too expensive to get and too demanding to the rest of the hardware to be really worth it.

Yeah but lowering the price doesn't make the chip any faster. We still want to see the tech move forward. I don't think anybody would be impressed if they came out with a $50 part that was as fast as the 4890. Great perf/$ but then what?

    No 4x 4890 isn't a revolution thats just money...

revolution is getting more than the performance of that 4x 4890 in one card in one generation jump at a reasonable price like the g80's started at...

Hell yes, if 4890 was 50$ I'd get 4 for sure.
DirectX 11 is just around the corner so you'll soon see all these innovations you're looking for. But pray for some manufacturer (*cough*, ATI) to release some sort of mainstream solution, otherwise, if we got stuck with 500+ $ chips (which we won't) for a while, we wouldn't see real DirectX 11 games for ages so all these innovations would be useless and buying a Dx11 card with crappy perf/$ would be nearly pointless.

Yep but you wouldn't have anything better than what you can go out and buy today. Excellent bang for the buck wasn't invented with RV770 you know....it's just one in a line of great cards (from both companies).

well why not wait a few months and do wonders for your electricity bill. 4890 xfire would use over a kilowatt. dx11 is a superset of dx10 so dx10 cards and consoles can play all new games.

Based on the leaked specs of RV870 and G300, it should be quite a bit faster than evergreen. I can't wait for G300 and will get one as soon as volume shipments start and price stabilizes from the initial launch and demand frenzy.

yes, you and a couple hundred people following internet rumors and leaked roadmaps :P

but how do you define small shippments and q4?
if nvidia ships 25 review samples worldwide as christmas gifts on december 20ieth, does that count as small shippments in q4?

you can stretch small shippments in q4 a lot...

If this is true, yay. Of course, most of us know that Fudzilla isn't always very reliable. But yeah, I would love to see both ATI and NVIDIA release their new generation at the same time, would be interesting.

Well that won't happen unless someone burns ATI's stock of cards to the ground. ATI will be first to hit this time around, no doubt about it.

    Go Nvidia...

First out with a DX11 Monster GPU would be sweet. (I think it's this year too!)

Would the 5870X2 count as a monster card? If ATI really wanna push, they might have that available too, before nV are ready to supply DX11 cards in volume.

Even if nVs solution bests the X2, it wouldnt be the first monster...and the ATI card would probably be cheaper in the perf/Ł dept.

ATI want DX11 card availability in ADVANCE of W7 launch. nV are hoping to match the release date at best?

If anyone wants to pin me as an ATI fanboi... stop being dim and check my HWB submissions page.

This is true, but you'd expect them to be rattling their spears or something so they don't look completely shafted.

thats now how nvidia does it, they usually shut up and save their breath and once they have a new product ready they use all their saved breath to try and blow their pr into your ears and brain

This would be great news if true, but I'm concerned about it being a monster chip again (yeah, I know that's exactly what it's expected to be). Monster chips mean premium prices, and I'm more of a guy of 200€ videocards than 500€ ones. I'm starting to fear a DX11 chips debut with no real competence between manufacturers, with AMD targeting performance segment and below, and NVIDIA starting by the enthusiast segment only. I'd be glad of seeing the NVIDIA's performance offering ASAP...

At least, this should force AMD to price their performance products with performance segment prices, instead of letting them have the only DX11 cards (and the fastest ones) to price them too high...

I believe this time (the DX11 graphic cards debut) will be more like the last generation (R700 vs GT200) launch was meant to be, before the NVIDIA's monster chips were known to be not faster enough to justify the price premium that their enthusiast segment focus should have meant.

Heck, I'd love they'd target the value and performance segments first... even knowing that many of you would get pissed off

its a brand new architecture and it uses MIMD so to really get the most out of this card stanford might have to create a new gpu client for this card and future nvidia cards.

It might be. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like ATI is making many changes in terms of GPGPU and isn't going to catch up much, if at all.

On the flip-side Nvidia might not be able to catch up in perf/mm^2 if they continue focusing too much on GPGPU. Games just aren't being built to take advantage of their architectural decisions (low IPC, lots of dynamic branching).
