It's true Napalm is right here, but he's also got a BEAST of a PSU as well, and that is my next upgrade as well is another better PSU..

Also, to the guy trying for 4.0 on your EP45 and are struggling, or any of you for that matter, try raising your FSB/VTT i saw one guy at 1.20 and another at 1.22 or something. Try like 1.35 fsb/vtt if you increase that with the vcore, it helps a lot on quads and you wont need as much voltage on vcore

Also, I know Jor, the VID totally matters, I know the mobo does as well, but the VID is a big part of this as well. I got offered a Q9650 with a batch number of L842.. thats a little better, but still in the 40's so I'm iffy. I want something under L835

thanks for the advice humeyboy i havent touched any other voltages other than the cpu vcore which i set to 1.275v and ive been priming now for 3 1/2 hours successfully so i might have it running where i want it. now as for GTL's, i have no idea where the settings are located in my bios. i would also like to get my ram running as close do DDR2 1000, but in order to do that, i would have to set the fsb strap to 333 so i can set the memory divider to run at DDR2 1068, but thats something for later on down the road once i nail my 24/7 settings for my cpu.

I have learned something on Intel Chipset Mobo's, more voltage is not always a better thing !

I have had to find just the right voltage before on a E8500 C0 and E8600 E0 and now Q9650.

I also got offered a L845B, you guys know of some best chance batch numbers?
my Q9650 is an L844B801. VID is 1.2375. right now ive been running P95 blend test at 445x9 with the CPU VCORE set to 1.275v for the last 4 hours. all other voltages are set to stock values.

I haven't flashed it yet, and probably won't unless it's absolutely necessary. I've only had the board for three days and it was very happy running my Q9550 @ 448FSB, so 445FSB with my Q9650 should be a breeze.

VID is meaningless, seriously. My 9550 was 1.25 VID and needed over 1.4v for 4GHz, and the best 9550 so far in this forum is also 1.25 VID which does 4GHz on 1.21v. Explain the role of VID in this scenario.

Your basing VID is meaningless off 2 chips? Look at what the average high vid chip takes to run at said frequency and look at what the low vid chip takes. Sure occasionally youll get a higher vid chip that doesnt need alot of voltage but how often if ever do you see a low vid chip that needs excessive voltage, more then your average vid chip, to run said frequency.

OK, perhaps my word choice wasn't the best. VID isn't meaningless, but high VID should not be equated to poor overclocking potential. If somebody offered me a choice between 1.15 VID and 1.25 VID CPUs, I'd choose the one that overclocked best, which may turn out to be the one with the higher VID.

But chances are that the lower VID model will overclock better. Thats the point.

Anyway, here is a SS of 4.05Ghz @ 1.37v load Prime stable almost 8 hours. I bet I could go a bit lower. How is that voltage for 4Ghz?

Ok so I ordered the XSPC 3x120 radiator, received it today. Now I was thinking of ordering the swiftech kit or the kit that Hoss posted minus the radiator. Was wondering if I just switched out the Swifttech rad for the XSPC rad, would that work ok? I still have a $300 limit after purchasing the rad. Any suggestions on the best way to go and still stay within my budget?

ya Jas thats actually really high for a EP45 board, as on my 750i my 1.2500 VID Q9650 sits at 4.0 Ghz with only 1.304v.. and would probably be less under a EP45.. and yes some high VID chips work better and clock higher than lower VID chips, but we aren't saying a lower VID chip is always going to be better, but in general, the chances are better of you getting higher clocks with less voltage with a lower VID. it's not guaranteed but it's a system that works pretty well for choosing chips.. These newer 45nm chips like the high Q9 series, and the E85, 8600 chips regardless of VID seem to still clock amazingly well, but you get yourself an older Q6600 with a 1.32 VID.. and I'll maybe bet my entire system that my 1.21VID Q6600 will clock higher, or the same, with less voltage (on a regular air or water system that is)

Anyways, enough of that discussion. OC Nub, as far as watercooling, the RX 360 is a good radiator. as long as you got the XSPC RX 360, if you got the rs then you should return it and just use the swiftech rad..
you're best bet without spending lots of money, is to use the RX 360, or a PA 120.3 and the Apogee GTZ block, a EK Multi Option Res, or a bay res. and then get the D5 Vario pump, aka MCP-655.. that's a great performing loop, or get the Heat Killer 3.0 CPU block if you want one of the best.

Yes I got the rx360. I ordered the Apogee GTZ extreme block, EK Multioption 400res rev.2, and the MCP-655 pump. I guess I just need tubing now?

I think i sorted out my problems....Cores 1,2 & 3 were fine at 1.28v on Prime95, but Core 0 was having none of it until i bumped it to 1.312v - which is annoying

If i Prime95 it at these settings for 24 hours, would such thing as a 'burn in' still apply? (not done it since the days of the Athlon XP)
