ok the way i read it is, we have 100 cherry picked rebranded Phenom II's that we are going to hand out to the same mob that usualy get the free hand outs.

    how exciting

i dont want to sound negative here, as you all know i am an avid AMD fan all the way, but lets just think about this, were more and likely gona see 7Ghz broken with one of these chips, and by any definintion thats great for AMD, but its still a bit of the 8Ghz plus that has been done on intel.

now yes its an important milestone for AMD and its users, but with K|ngP|n just missing the mark on that, is another 200 mhz that exciting, i mean really cmon is it?

maybe i am very wrong and these are gona give us 7.5 gig+ and maybe 8 gig, but i dought it.

its just starting to look like a very drawn out marketing exercise, lets move on to pastures new, instead of hanging around doing the same thing with even more cherry picked chips.

anyways good luck to the usual mob that get them, and i hope you have a ton of fun

If AMD would sell these, even in a VERY limited quantity at a high price tag, it would be totally OK. To "camouflage" high leakage retails as this TWKR edition chip, and putting the damn "Not for resale"-label on them is DISGUSTING

If this particular model should count in any rankings then it should be available to the public, and not just the chosen few AMD shipped them out to. It's not a regular model if it's not allowed to be sold!

i sort of couldnt agree more, what exactly are they marketing here? a chip no mere mortal can have, that achieves clocks that no mere mortal can achieve?

why? the term 'blowing ones own trumpet' comes to mind,

and why market it at all? why not hand it out to the usual peeps who get the ES samples and other cherry picked samples, who are ever so cautios not to tell us what it is they have, and let them keep being ever so cautious about what it is?

it wont, i am pretty sure of that, thier own marketing of it has stopped that in its tracks, but one positive of this, is i suppose they are acting in a respectable manner by not leaking these on the QT, and letting the 'ever so cautious' crowd, use them in ranking.

although i will state, this kind of thing, along with the so called F1 tournament is starting to turn my stomach, in respect to an overclocking 'community'

on this forum, gone is the guy who achieves a stable 24/7 OC and shares the details, and others follow it with there rigs at home, discussing what they do with it.

in, is the competitive types who recieve cherry picked chips, and parade it as the norm, basking in the 'glory' they think it achieves

Pi scores, HWbot validation, and so on is the new discussion in open forum, no longer restrained to the Xtreme Overclocking thread.

there was allways the xtreme clockers, and there allways will be, its just the little guys seem to be gone now, but thats just my opinion.

no dought, i will be now be seen to be 'jealous' or 'envious' , or trying to cause trouble with my views on this, but hey thats others opinions, this couldnt be more from the truth.'

Not because of your opinion, probably because your renewed avatar and spamming other threads with messages regarding TWKR.

FYI my avatar has changed maybe 7 times in the last week alone, and what my new one sais is blunt and too the point, and also more importantly true.

as for 'spamming' other threads, there is a 'report post' function you can make use off, please use this to report any spam threads you may find.

but this is exactly what i was waiting on, so thanks for that, two of the people actualy getting these 'hand outs' are the two people so far telling me that i am a thread spammer, and also that i need to 'chill out'

who needs to chill? this is making the assumption that i am 'angry' or in someway had my 'nose put out of place'

as for wanting one particle, that maybe true for some people, but not me, i dont have the set up for this chip too take it where i would want to go with it, nor do i really have the time. so it would be wasted on me.

i am happy for the' chosen few' have fun and give us clocks we would all like to see,

what my point is in case it was missed last time, is that we now have a 'select' few, running a 'select' chip, that is not availible for sale, but marketed as something that is, all boxed and shiny with a brand.

we will now have maybe a fortnight of 'clocks' that are unrealistic even to a dedicated Overclocker, who has spent a lot of time and money on his set up.

this is not an ES chip, and doesnt come close, so that doesnt apply either.

and i say again, this is all about 'blowing ones trumpet', after the band has left if you like,

again have fun, but you know its all a lie

you know this sort of re-enforces my point that this is not needed, all those video's uploaded, about Overclocks and so on, and just over 1500 videos viewed? with just over 1700 subscribers?

and considering youtube is global, this is hardly the fan base you release a chip that is 'not for sale' it serves no purpose whatsoever, again much like the F1 tournament, there is just not a big enough market for this kind of shenanigans.

interesting to a small minority of clockers, yes, to the masses who overclock...no

I see the TWKR as pretty much being AMD's version of the "Extreme" chips.

Only they don't consider the the people that want the fastest chip but do not ever plan on overclocking to be a demographic; since apparently the chip probably won't be any different in performance on air than a PhII 955 (965??).

    Why would I do that?

That's exactly what this is all about: getting the stuff to people who have the time to push them as hard as possible. I'm really sorry for all those people who want a 4GHz stable Phenom II, but lets face it: getting a chip at 4GHz stable on air cooling is as pointless as making it run at 7GHz: it doesn't make a difference in daily computing nor does it guarantee that other people can run at that frequency as well.

Should we complain about the climate as well? People in Siberia DO have an unfair advantage, don't they.

Please, point me towards the dedicated overclocker who has spend thousands of dollars on Ph-II 955 chips to find the real gem. Whereas overclockers around the globe are spending rediculous amounts of money on i7 chips, almost no one buys more than 5 955's to test on LN2.

Hwbot counts 18523 registered users. Excluding large parts of Asia. You're also forgetting 2/3 of the F1 concept.

Just rereading some of this thread and sorry to see some unhappy people.
Why does anytime a company tries to do what I'll call a 'good" thing some people get unhappy and try to find fault with it?
I can sit back and enjoy what people will do with these and I suggest that maybe some here think on that.
You don't have to have "everything" that exists to be able to enjoy the experience.

    Edit:
I want to add a little more to this.
Think on the cost/benefit to the company.
They send out a 100 chips in these nice fancy boxes.
The retail cost of the cpu is what? say it's worth $300.00 based on what I see in their pricing and a little added for it being a special chip.
So they have $30,000.00 for the chips plus the cost of the labor, boxes, and shipping involved.
Call it $40,000.00 when all is said and done for the sake of picking a number.
Now, what do they get out of it?
Some exposure yes, but is it worth the $40K investment?
    That's a management call.
What I see is that they incure a $40G cost to put smiles on the faces of 100 guys.
How can anyone find fault with this?
I don't care who they go to.
I just see this as a good thing for the people who get them and then also I get to watch what they do with them.
None of us lose, everyone wins and I'd just like to say Thanks to AMD for doing this.

Will you two chill out? You can't compare Intel's single-core Netburst to AMD's quad-core Deneb, apples to oranges. TWKR is effectively an ES chip, so don't get your panties in a wad. Keep in mind we have people benching Core i7 965 D0 ES chips and unreleased 960 ES chips also. The difference here is AMD is giving these away while people pay an arm and a leg for ES chips from shady sellers breaking NDA. This is all about the fun that is overclocking and of course it is a PR stunt. Open your eyes guys, this entire forum is a PR hotbed

Well, this is more like if i7 985 would be handed out to only a few peeps, never making it to retail, and those few would start hitting 200MHz better clocks than they did with whatever they had before. 965 and 960 ES's aren't that much of a big deal when you have the Xeons.

I don't mind these "mwahahaha - you-can't-have-one-edition" PII's for their existance, it's the way they end up at the top of the charts at unbeatable frequencies and only available to a limited part of the community I don't like... If this is the norm for the future the ones at the top will be in a league of their own, with the rest being far, far behind no matter what they do. Is that what we want? I don't.

TBH, you can be part of that mob too if you want... anyone can, you just have to spend hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours and hours OC'ing and make a name for yourself.

Handing these out to just any old schmoe would be the same as having a dirt track racer from the county fair drive a car in the indy 500. It's just a waste. You have to prove your skills first, THEN you get all of the cool goodies.

We still do not know the magic recipe for creating or screening processors that excel at extreme low temperatures. We continue to experiment. We have not been able to create an artificial K|ngp|n, SF3D, or chew*.

These processors have some of the electrical properties known to contribute to extended scaling at extreme temperatures. By giving these parts to people who know how to push them we learn. Look at the past 6 months. The innovation in cooling technology alone over the past six months has been staggering.

There are enough of these out there, all in good hands, that I am sure the community will be passing these around. I think there is an opportunity for those who really want one to ultimately get their hands on one.

Results will vary. At these frequencies small differences can make or break scaling and we do not know how to screen for these attributes save by the methods you have developed. These chips are out of specification processors that would have been scrapped. Now they are in the right hands.
