Unfortunately in my case it's not.I've been spending so much time tweaking GTLs that I've forgotten all about vcore...thinking it was an E0 I said to myself "hell no, 4GHz won't need over 1.4v seeing that most people with E0s are getting it with a vcore of below 1.3xxx" so I've been doing all my tests with 1.375 vcore, which is already generous.
BUT IT DOES... 1.45v, to be precise. I have it at 3.6GHz at the moment, 1.375vcore, and it's only just stable. Screw my Q9550 lol.
Ok so vcore isn't the solution either; I'm back to 3.4GHz and still getting errors in prime - is it possible that although I seem to get more stability with increased vcore, more vcore is not the solution and it's still about tweaking the GTLs? Or perhaps a better BIOS (I'm using 2101)?
I tried flashing to 1401 but EZ flash was having none of it since the current bios is more up-to-date.![]()

Yeah I've played around with PL - that's what enabled me to get to 4GHz (471 FSB) but I just can't get it stable.
If I have 1.4 or lower vcore in BIOS, Prime95 automatically quits and I get a windows error message...
If I have 1.45 vcore in BIOS, Prime95 keeps running on three cores because one core fails almost immediately. This to me looks like a definite vcore issue, not GTL refs or FSB stability. At 3.6GHz it's more about the FSB because even at 3GHz I get errors. OCing quads is really hard and frustrating work lol.![]()

Well I finally got some overclocking underway after I found the cause of my instability - a dead stick of cherished D9GKX
Even though the memory was causing the crashes, unfortunately it wasn't the only cause of instability - my E0 just isn't a good chip, not at all:
3.6GHz needs 1.3v
3.7GHz needs 1.33v - not bad
3.8GHz needs 1.375v
4GHz is out of the question
I'm not overly keen on pumping even 1.375v into my CPU when for a teensy 100mhz decrease in frequency I can go all the way down to 1.33v.
Anybody have a nice Q9550 they want to sell?![]()

Maybe things are looking up for me - I was browsing ebay and I came across a preowned Q9650 for £125 buy it now, which is crazy cheap (about $187)It does admittedly sound too good to be true, but I shall wait and see (if it ever arrives in the post). Fingers crossed.

Here's an interesting comparison - E8500 @ 4.6GHz vs Q9550 @ 3.8GHz 3DMark06
Could go higher with the Q9550 but I'm selling it to a mate so 1.36v is plenty for benching
GTX 260 (216) is at 700/1500/2300 in both tests...

GET A GIGABYTE UD3P and clock the hell out of that Q9550
Anyone got a Q9550 FPO L846B738 ? or know how well they overclock? please post
**MODS** If this is in the wrong place please move, figured it would be ok to post in this thread. **MODS**
My 1st post here and I'm in awe of the amount of information that's available. I'm kinda lagging behind in the technology but feel it's still worth trying to get all I can before a major upgrade. Thank you for any help I receive and apologies for the long post.
I've been searching and searching but haven't been able to find any information specific to the Q9550 and the IN9 32X-Max. I'm currently stable at 2.94GHz and I'm wondering if my bios settings are what they should be.
I'm a long time computer builder and recently started overclocking my stuff with the sole purpose of obtaining a bit more performance with stability as the main focus. I don't plan to squeeze as much as I can as I'm on air cooling with a Zalman CNPS9500AT but I feel 3.5GHz? should be attainable with what I have via some xtreme xpert advice.
I fully understand that I will have to increase several voltages in order to stay stable at higher clock speeds but, am I on the right track? Are the OCguru settings correct?
When I increase the bus speed my mem frequency drops, is this normal?
Here are some screens:
During Prime95 torture test: Do my temps look ok for my current settings?
Linked or Unlinked? Can I get up to 3.5GHz by upping the bus and voltages with this configuration? Are lower multipliers + higher bus speeds preferred?
What is a good voltage configuration to start at for 3.2GHz?
Should I try changing the timings to 5-5-5-15 and bump up the clock? Leave alone? I need faster memory to do what I'm asking?
Thank you for reading and for any help received,
Jon

YZjon, I think your question deserves its own thread, you will probably get more answers as well, but since you post it here I will try to help you out.
If I am not mistaken, your motherboard has a Nvidia 680 chipset, I really have no clue how far you can go with a quad and that chipset (check out the Asus Striker thread here).
Give it a try in 400 fsb with your cpu multi at 6x and your memory in 1:1 ratio (your RAM/CPU should do this just fine) and test stability mainly focus in your motherboard (prime blend test), if its stable then set your cpu multi to 8.5 and try some prime small ffts.
That would be 3400 mhz, for a start I think is pretty good.
Good luck and keep us posted
**** If anyone wishes to offer help please see this thread and post there ****
Thank you for the reply and suggestions. I tried what you said and couldn't get it to post. No matter what I try, "Linked" will not allow system to post. Right now it's stable at 2.94GHz unlinked but going higher is posing similar results with a no post. I've tried small increments with .5v increases across the board. Still won't post.
I think I'll post this in it's own thread per your suggestion, need a bunch of eyes to hit this.

I know of one guy who has an eVGA 790i board and his Q9650 is sitting at 4.1GHz, 1.26v. Nvidia boards are not all bad, but they ain't the best, that's no secret.Originally Posted by andressergio
