Direct-die WCing! Cheap and easy.

We all know how these i7's can become furnaces when pushing the GHz above 4, so I thought I'd post up my direct-die solution!

First, here's the necessary supplies:



From left to right:
-i7 with IHS removed and electrical parts sealed in epoxy.
-IHS with 7/8" hole drilled in it.
-30x30x25mm acetal with a 7/8" hole down the center and a G1/4 thread tapped in one side.
-30x30x10mm acetal with G1/4 thread in the center.
-3/8" plastic hose barb with the threads trimmed way down.

First step is to epoxy the IHS back on:



Then epoxy on the other 2 pieces:





The plastic barb is screwed/epoxied to the underside of the top "cover". It serves to direct the incoming coolant directly onto the die.

I paid about $40 for 2 big chunks of acetal on eBay. A little pricey but there's enough there to make atleast 30 more blocks...lol! I'm still waiting for some Bitspower fittings to show up, should be here Monday. I'll post up some results after leak-testing, etc. At this point I just gotta pray the chip isn't dead after this ordeal!

One nice thing about this setup is there is no hold-down equipment required. Just install the CPU like you would any other and you're done!

Well, the much anticipated results are in and unfortunately, they are not good. I'll let the SS's speak for themselves.

I'm not sure what I did wrong with my design. Another member has posted great success with his direct-die setup. I guess at this point I should just be happy the chip isn't dead. I think I'll just rip the IHS back off and run my Fusion on the bare die. Thanks for all the support and comments guys! Sorry to disappoint.

yeah when i realized you were epoxying the "block" straight onto the cpu... i was like "dam... no friggen retention bracket nice"

hopefully it still works :P

next you need to bling it up or create a kit that allows normal people without massive balls to do this

Damn that's awesome! Although you will still be limited by coolant-ambient delta. Are you planning to use a chiller or anything?
