RV790/RV740 update

RV790, or RV740, are the chips most people are waiting to appear. RV740 has already been previewed and it was made quite clear that it is more than a worthy replacement for the Radeon HD 4830. Even though it was just the slower Radeon HD 4750, and not the faster Radeon HD 4770, we're pretty sure Radeon HD 4830 won't be missed by many. RV790 on the other hand has been widely discussed and since it bears a new name it has also been suggested that it has additional computing power in the form of more shaders and texture units.

Recent benchmarks suggest otherwise though. While the tests do show that the card is 13-20% faster than the current single-GPU flagship, Radeon HD 4870, with only 13% clock increase (750 to 850MHz). This isn't really enough to back up the claims of additional shaders, but instead it has been suggested by sources that the AMD decided to rename the core just because it has been fixed.

Fixed in terms of erratas and better yields, which in turn should make it just a tiny bit faster than RV770, but in theory an even better overclocker and fun card to play with. And then we should not forget that this is just the normal version and that there will be an even faster version at the end of the month. So in summary, RV790 doesn't seem to be very new, but instead a fixed and improved RV770.
