The memory shouldnt hold it back much at all, since 448-bit gives the same bandwidth as GDDR5 and 896MB is so close to 1GB. I do not think the 4890 would be able to touch either GTX 275 or 280.

ATI better have a surprise up its sleeve, or Nvidia is gonna wipe the floor with the 4890 attached to its mop.
Oh yeah, 900 mb is close to 1 gb. 10% close.

Why's that? ATI themselves said that was going to be their strategy for HD4800. A HD4890X2 most likely will be released unless ATI runs into som "unexpected issues".

And I really hope its more then just a clock increase, hopefully "RV790" has a better IPC aswell.

Just kidding with ya. I'm just saying that ATI better have a surprise. Like being able to overclock to 1GHz, or actually having 960 shaders/ 48 TMU's at 850MHz. But as you can see, there's already sightings of the 4890 in Hong Kong and Taiwan. We all know that a 4870 overclocked to 850MHz still cannot get anywhere near the GTX 280 (remember, Nvidia cards can also be overclocked).
Well, I've modded this section long enough to know what does and what does not sound like a fanboy, but I will tell you what I've been telling everyone else for 3 weeks now.

    Wait for April 6th.

a 4890X2 may not be worth it at this point, they may not release one simply for the fact that the r8xx would come soon enough after to make any 4890X2 production line moot.

Core 2 Duo(Conroe) was based on the Intel Core Duo(Yonah) which was based on the Pentium M(Banias) which was based on the Pentium III(Coppermine).

Core 2 Duo is a Pentium III on meth.

    Bingo.

But as someone said earlier, Sapphire may make one themselves. Or, if ATI want's to ensure that IF there are any delays with R800, they will be covered; if so, then they will release one.

    RV790/RV740 update

RV790, or RV740, are the chips most people are waiting to appear. RV740 has already been previewed and it was made quite clear that it is more than a worthy replacement for the Radeon HD 4830. Even though it was just the slower Radeon HD 4750, and not the faster Radeon HD 4770, we're pretty sure Radeon HD 4830 won't be missed by many. RV790 on the other hand has been widely discussed and since it bears a new name it has also been suggested that it has additional computing power in the form of more shaders and texture units.

Recent benchmarks suggest otherwise though. While the tests do show that the card is 13-20% faster than the current single-GPU flagship, Radeon HD 4870, with only 13% clock increase (750 to 850MHz). This isn't really enough to back up the claims of additional shaders, but instead it has been suggested by sources that the AMD decided to rename the core just because it has been fixed.

Fixed in terms of erratas and better yields, which in turn should make it just a tiny bit faster than RV770, but in theory an even better overclocker and fun card to play with. And then we should not forget that this is just the normal version and that there will be an even faster version at the end of the month. So in summary, RV790 doesn't seem to be very new, but instead a fixed and improved RV770.

I think the rumors are going out of proportion because looking at the naming scheme RV770 then RV790 there is only a little increase in the chip numbering, which could reflect the performance increase, it is not like the difference in the naming scheme compare to RV870
    In progress......
