Well the vertical case problem can easily be solved by flipping the case on it's side so the board is horizontal. Mounting a block on a vertical motherboard is just asking for a bad mount imho. At least the horizontal mounting will not be worse than mounting a cooler on a vertical board, so just to be sure I always put the case on its side.
