Hey, I'm wondering if this genius, Charlie, over at the INQ, is trying to make it sound like the 4890 will be exact the same chip as 4870, only with clock speeds "up to 20% faster", just to make Nvidia let some of its guard down. We know that Charlie is 100% anti-Nvidia, so I have a feeling that he's doing this just in case the 4890 would be a new chip that is whole heck lots faster, therefore destroying BOTH the 275 and even the 285!!! Imagine how much Nvidia would be hurt by this thing if caught off-guard...

We must credit Charlie for having some brain cells left after imbibing so much over at the Hermit.

You're saying Charlie is trying to be a double agent for AMD?

Yep @ Tottentranz (but shame on you for being like a 5-year-old tattletale :P), and a mere clock increase hardly makes sense to me.

Here's an excellent article on the whole RV790 idea (I wonder if it's already been mentioned here in the forums.. maybe you're an expert on that LOL) :

Yes, it has :P . Someone even made a thread about that article, but was then merged in this thread. It should be 2 or 3 pages behind.

I don't think the RV790 is just another speed-bump either, but mainly because we still have to wait some time for the R8xx. 20% more performance just doesn't feel "enough" for a chip that's supposed to last another 6 months or so, if it's not even shrinked.

ATI did it before, though. With the 9800 Pro -> 9800XT.

But that was when ATI had to make sure that it remained faster than 5900 Ultra (9800Pro) and then 5950 Ultra (9800XT that had 256MB like the 5950). I just hope that ATI realizes that they can beat the 285 without being any more Watts-hungry than the 285..

    RV790 has a new name?
Rumor: RV770 Refresh is Radeon HD 4900

Atleast according to the latest round of emails sent out today. The branding could however change as there is still quite some time for the launch, which as we told you earlier is slated for the 8th of next month.

The details of the ASIC are listed as 800 stream procesors combined with upto 200MHz core clock increase over the Radeon HD 4870. Interestingly the memory specification was moderately bumped by 50MHz only. AMD has been very successful with all the smoke and mirrors during the RV770 launch, we wouldnt be surprised if it was the case again.

    RV790 is Coming

RV770 was one of the most successful products for AMD (ATI GPG) in the last 3 years. The introduction of this ASIC brought unprecedented gaming performance into affordable price levels. No wonder everybody is looking forward to it's refresh, including Nvidia. The slip comes from PCI-SIG (PCI Special Interest Group) website. Among the list of new ASICs AMD has submitted for PCI-Express certification includes RV790, M97 (Mobility RV740), FirePro 3D V8700 & FirePro 3D V7750 (RV740 based FirePro).

Of late, AMD began keeping tight wraps on in its in-development ASICs. RV670 was passed off as the RV570 successor but under the hood was a "full" R600 shrink and not a three-quarter R600. The next fudge was that the RV770 was a 480 stream processor ASIC and we all know how that turned out. We'll have to wait and see if RV790 also follows in the same vein or not. As of now the launch is slated for the 8th of April along with the RV740, we'll let you know if there is any changes or updates.

    UPDATE:

A few more details; new board design and a completely new cooling solution. We can confirm that it is new ASIC and not a speed binned product.

They do a rather good job feeding false news to the rumor sites to confuse NV.

Sapphire Radeon HD4890 appears in online stores
The RV790 is coming and, as impressive or unimpressive as it may be in terms of performance it's still a GPU a lot of people are interested in finally seeing in stores, review, or in their PCs. With its release date (early April) closing in fast, the RV790-powered Radeon HD 4890 (or HD 4900) has now already been listed by a couple of online stores and according to one of them, it will feature 1GB of GDDR5 memory clocked at 3900 MHz (3600 MHz for the HD 4870) and a GPU set to 850 MHz.

Coming with a dual-slot cooler, the Sapphire Radeon HD4890 can be found at Netherlands-based Salland at just under 250 Euro and at PB Technologies in New Zealand for about $365 / 280 Euro. The prices are a bit high but they'll likely go down in time for the official release.
