Retail Q9650 Overclocking Thread

Well I finally had my first crash under normal gaming... So I'm looking really for stability at this point. I think I have very conservative numbers so far but I just don't know the bounderies.

Here are my current settings

Q9650@ 4000.5 Ghz 445X9
vcore in Bios is set to 1.4 CPU-Z is 1.38
CPU FSB 1.3
Mem 1.9 (Stock)
SPP 1.45
MCP 1.55
HT- SPP-MCP 1.25

All Spread Spectrum Disabled

Temps are low 30C at idle and under normal game load low 50C. Under Small FTT they reach low 60C. CPU Cooler Zalman 9700 LED


Goal is stability and of course I would like to go higher if possible...

To find help you will be better of looking into Evga specific forum or look for your mobo thread here in XS.

The problem you're facing is more related to your mobo bios settings then to the Q9650 (what this thread is about).

Welcome to DFI + Quads combination my friend. It is not a good board to use with these chips. I had same processor in my DFI X48 (check my build log in the sig) and maxed out with CRAZY voltages at 472 x 9 (1.6vtt 1.8pll etc)!

Now I'm happy at 4680Mhz (520x9 IBT/Prime stable) with 1.30vtt/1.5pll/1.389vcore.

You my friend are EXTREEEEM! I wouldn't even consider using that much volts for VTT and PLL. Knowing my luck the board would smoke as soon as I tried to boot with those settings.

As soon as I can find someone to peddle a system to I will be getting the UD3P for sure.

Decided to try a custom run today with my Q9650. Looks ok to me.
Although it looks to me as if Core 0 is kinda weak, it was still running 4096K at test 7 while the other cores already were running 1024K again.

I will; it's got a tall task - gotta beat 9x529 FSB with 8GBs of ram of my Rampage Formula x48.

The big difference is that on the Rampage you can only CPU-Z validate because is not stable and on Gigabyte you can actually Prime95/IBT it...

But why sub utilize 8gigas of ram? You can use 4 gigas on one machine and 4 gigas on the other :-)

EDIT: just to add that this board has failed to run smoothly with large amount of ram (16Gb) I don't think it was meant to be used as a server but as a OC/Enthusiast board. It will be interesting to see if it can get different results with 8Gb.

Hey guys, was checking out this thread. Ordered the q9650, should get it early next week. Hope that I didn't make a mistake, have an EO q9550 running at 4.0ghz 471x8.5. Want to try and get at least 4.25ghz. I'm not very Xtreme with my voltages, just started running a quad a month ago and unsure what reasonable 24/7 voltages are. I mostly play online games, need to be able to run the clocks everyday not just for benching. Also ordered another EP45-UD3P, after getting use to the settings I love the board. Ordered everything from Newegg, haven't had much luck with overclocking eggy cpu's in the past but the price was right. Will try and post results when i get it up and running.

Well, took me about 3 hours to swap boards; some minor but significant problems on the pcb designs of the two boards mean no mcw30 on the sb, but this is no biggie as the ich10 sb is known to run quite cool. Good news isI'm up and running so I can have whole day tomorrow to tweak. Bad news is (yes, there is bad news) the ambient temps have changed so much since my last runs. This room is an oven and the weather has gotten rather warm lately since I relocated.

Priming at 4.7Ghz+ would be the feat of the century. I just love 8giga, would have nothing less. Notice even on my runs on ripping, I had 8giga Dumb, but that's just me; makes the overclock even more impressive.

Looking forward to some tweaking; main goal is to:

1. Find voltages differences between the UD3P and the Rampage Formula

2. Find max clocks

3. Find max fsb

4. Find max stability

Wow, that's pretty high voltage for 4Ghz. Do you have LLC enabled on that shot? The reason I ask is because I am running 480FSB, 4230Mhz p95 stable with 1.33v set in bios and CPUZ reads very close to that with LLC set to Auto. I have yet to gain anything with LLC enabled on both my P5E3 Premium or P5Q3 Deluxe. Most of the time when I enable it my system won't post. Better stability with it set to Auto, that's just my experience.

It seems to be one of the better steppings out there. Mine runs super cool and p95/LinX stable with low volts. What mb will you be using with your Q9650?

Sounds good. Post your results here for us to see. I would like to see how yours compares to my L844B. I would test with Intel Burn Test or LinX after you have found stability with p95. I was able to run p95 for 10hours+ with no errors or problems but was getting lock ups in COD World At War. I ran LinX and found I was not actually stable. Had to bump vcore up a notch.

What you waiting for? Best mainstream chip ever made, period. You don't need massive cooling to play in the high 4xxxx.

I have a L845B527 got it last week I did have a quick play and it ran 4.05Ghz (450 x 9) prime small fft stable for about 30 mins at 1.26V, although I tried it on a M2F which I don't like might get a UD3P to test it out next week when I'm back home... VID of the chip I have is 1.1875...
EDIT: forgot to mention it did have a few stuck temp sensors which don't like temps below 40 degrees but at higher temps they were all within 2 degrees of each other...

I heard that the L845's have stuck sensors in most of them, and that the newer chips didn't have sensor problems, but the recent 44's and 45's do.
Can you guys post what batch #'s you have, what the VID's are and your clocks? I'm trying to decide what to do. maybe we need to start a official Batch # / VID thread for the Q9650's.

Just got the CPU and Mobo in, waiting for the HS to show up, ordered the Ultra120 extreme. Batch#L845B522. Dealt with a stuck sensor for well over a year on my e8400 so if its just the idle bug I can live with it. Main concern is if it oc's well. Also got the rev 1.1 ud3p, was hoping for the 1.0, my other is a 1.0. Will try and get it going as soon as the rest of the parts come in.


Edit: Stratch that, ordered the cooler from jabtech and they sent the am2 version. bracket wont fit. Will have to wait on the build or take my other rig apart to use the cooler for now.

Every time I check back in this thread it makes me want to sell my P5Q-E and get a UD3P. I would love to get this thing stable at 4.5GHz (on air!).

Jab-tech had the parts shipped out within an hour of contacting them. Got a Fed Ex tracking # in less than 2 hours. Cant ask for more than that.

Put the tuniq on it, got it running. Stock vid is 1.2125, priming at 400x9 stock vid.
