shot in portrait image mode with my new 50mm f/1.4. the shot is pretty soft, kinda of weird definitely not as sharp as my 28mm which is my favorite focal length. plus its made in china as were the 28mm was made in japan. the softness might be from my tiffen UV filter but i use it on my 28mm too so just got the lens today so ill have to play with it some more.

If you are using the non AFS version of the 1.4, I know for a fact that the old one is pretty soft at 1.4. It gives the illusion of sharpness by blurring the background wonderfully, but when you actually look at the subject you double take and realize that its not that sharp. Stop it down to 2.8, where your 28mm is and it will be very sharp.

As for the new one, most say it is quite sharp at 1.4, with a few complaints. Possible mis-focus could have caused the issue.

And yes, that shot begs for a SB-600 bounced off the ceiling.

yea its the non AFS, i shot it at 3.2 but it is probably just bad focus. alot of the shots i shot at 1.4 now that i look at it is pretty sharp but i can definitely feel that its not sharp as the 28mm. ill have to test them both at f/2.8 and see which is sharper. but it was a gift so i cant complain
