    Red face

    @ ragheb

hi ragheb , are you using a RE with CS3222271 (D9JNL) - same as me ?
    I think ToyTen's kit is CS3222270 (D9GTR)

Happy to post my CS3222271-based settings, but for which clocks ?

Also what happens above 400FSB on yours ? Is your kit memtest stable at rated 800mhz/CL7 - mine needs about 1.68V for that.[/QUOTE]

Thanks cheapseats for your response & Happy New Year to all at Xtreme Systems..

As to your question, I am running I think the exact CS3222271 RAM as you as can be seen from the image below and I am struggling to get FSB beyond 380Mhz..I am stable though at 360 on OCCT which is hopelessly poor. All Bios settings are on AUTO except for the strap which is at 333 & the voltage increases shown on the Everest sensor page. I am also running it pretty cool on a WC for CPU / NB & GPU (8800 GTS slightly ovclkd).
I know in a post you sent on 8 Dec you showed FSB's from 450 at 1:2 all the way to 562 at 5:8 which is by my standard miraculous!!. I am using fairly similar volts increases as yourself but I am not sure whether I need to change the mem timings in Bios or via Memset.
I hope you can help as the lot of you here seem to be quiet geniuses at the huge overclocks...

Hey man if you need any help just post here and I don't mind to help~
IMO, 380FSB should be a piece of cake considerin X48 natively supports 1600Mhz related FSB (400Mhz FSB).
If you're unstable in higher FSBs it's more likely that your ram is not stable. Hence a memtest86+ 2.01 run is recommended...
CPU VTT is rather high. For my rig I only need 1.19v to get 545FSB stable.
vCore is rather high as well. Most E8600 can do 4Ghz below 1.3v...
vNB is way too high...1.4v should be more then enough.
Also Set NBGTL to +20mv and it should give you a more stable situation.
Please try this out and report back so that to find out which part is holding you back

    Thank you ci2kla very much.
Will follow your advise and report in a few hours. My only concern is whether the RAM is able to run at these speeds at any settings?
Do all of the RAM you quote in your sig run at the 545*8 at 7-6-5-18?
    Cheers

ragheb, maybe try this at 450FSB - since it's for the same kit etc, it could save time over working up from 360FSB. It's the maximum Memtest86+/HCI stable CL7 clock my kit will do. All volts are lower than you have been using....

As ci2kla mentioned - can you test with Memtest86+ and see what happens in Test 3 ? On my kit Test 3 shows errors with under- and overvolting, before any other test. With the other 450FSB settings below, vDIMM should be the only adjustment needed for the memory if your kit is capable of 900mhz/CL7.

If you can't pass 86+ at any vDIMM (higher or lower than mine), then bring down FSB 10mhz and test again. Keeping vDIMM as low as possible is key with my kit.

Not much to set for this FSB.....vTT/GTL *might* need adjustment/testing with higher CPU multi and vCORE, but vNB < 1.45V is plenty for 450x10/1:2/CL7 clocks using E8600 and 2x1GB CS3222271.

    Hope it works

    634fsb and ddr3 ram at 2113mhz on rampage extreme with e8600 (q822a435)

i thought i'd see what ramspeed and fsb i could do the everest memory benchmark at , this is using the 400 strap and loose memory subtimings and tref on ram set at 100 and running and on performance level 10 so not mind blowing numbers

    Volts used
cpu 1. 392 (1.4 set in bios llc enabled)
    northbridge 1.73
    vtt 1.40
    ram 2.04

cpu pll 1.51 set in bios

upped southbridge voltages to 1.6 (for the 1.5 one) and 1.1 (for the 1.05 one)

    ram skewing
    for 500fsb 1600mhz Cl7-7-7-20-1t
use same skewing except no nbdram /dram A/B = Auto, fsb termination 1.12
    dram at 1.67 ....nb = 1.25v
    400fsb is the same.

vtt for 563 fsb termination issue .....1.19 for IBT stable
but will fail on my test 3 for orthos .. set blend.. then custom min fft 4096... only fsb termination at 1.29 will pass.
theres other ways to force 1.19 to pass for both but will result in weird irregular issues with usb ports.

Ok. I ve got the results below of the first changes pending a collection of advice from some of you wizards. However, and a very odd behaviour is that when i set the mem timings manually in bios, they seem to revert to auto when I check in cpuz or memset!! Anyway, managed to modify in memset but 10% in memtest and got errors so I am assuming either more volts or lousy memory and need to drop a few mhz & see how that goes. Will keep you posted..but would appreciate your feedback.
    Cheers,

Nice of you to share this with us.

I really like to know how do you know how to tune all of those DRAM skews?

I don´t even know how to start tuning those skews. Feel free to PM me with some guidelines.

Another set of results, this time at 500 FSB with 99924 & 1.92 Vdimm.
I could not get better timing with the Cellshock CS3222271 not matter what high vdimm I used. Also needed to increase PL to 12 & CR to 2T to get it stable under memtest as you can see. Very disappointed with this RAM so far or I am doing something wrong. I had hopes of getting 77720 at 500 FSB with this high vdimm.
Apologies for the picture quality..something odd happened when I resized it to fit the 200kb limit

I am getting really perplexed at this behaviour. I cannot figure out why CPUz is showing completely different timings to the one I have set manually in bios!!!
Also, following cheapseats advice I have set the strap to be in bios at 333 & DRAM Freq at 1800; so I assumed this will always be a 5:8 ratio that I am after but CPUz shows it as 1:2!!!
I am using 0501 bios for the moment as I read it is the best for high FSB with an E8600.
Can anyone explain this & help please?

dont mind posting just that some joker will take this and make it a permanent guide for everything...
    that is just pure misinformation

ok ram skewing guide for e8600 + samsung hco 2x2gb dimm a2/b2 the rest u have u test it ureself

    software needed memtest86 / IBT / Orthos

Before u begin u must set the cpu skew/nb skew.. and not leave it in auto.
for e8600 confirmed up to 500fsb both is set at normal
    oops forgot to mention that.

    CLK Skew
first skew to test would be clk leave the rest in auto
so far i found that leaving Channel A +25 advance more than Channel B
use IBT to confirm say in windows diagnostic mode 4gb kit atleast 60 roughly 4 hours and 2gb kit atleast 200 runs with 1600mhz above i had to use clk skews +nb/dram vtt

    CTL Skew and CMD Skew
with the ram i tested i found out that CMD skew is the indicator for ctl skew
meaning if the cmd skew is on delay than the ctl skew also must be in delay
if the cmd skew is on advance than the ctl skew is also in advance
and for me cmd skew is best with channel A1/A2 advance 50 to channel B1/B2
and for ctl skew like cheapseat uses channel A1/A2 delayed 25 to channel B1/B2

    Test first initial test
use memtest86 test 5 only and run in loops... set vdimm one notch below than the perfect vdimm confirmed at ure setting
test 5 for memtest86 is the best indicator for nb voltage/vdimm voltage and skewing stability and also tRFC..
so example if u set cmd skew in delay then delay the ctl skews and test
    find the limit.
later retest with clk skews to find the best almost perfect to pass excepts maybe hangs on pass 2-3. Take note there is no errors.. only hang.. if errors that means skewing is wrongly set.

Retest with orthos in diagnostic mode
Set to blend.. and then custom min fft 4096 max 4096 priority 10.
try to pass more than 4 hours... take note this is hard.. a lot of test that will pass memtest86/hci memtest will not pass this.
    example the config above trfc 60 pass 35 mins/72 4hours 12 mins/88 24 hours manually stopped
also noted was at 563 fsb fsb termination at 1.19 for IBT but for this test requires 1.29
    have fun

1600 CL7 tRFC 110.. vdimm 1.65 for samsung hco 2x2gb with the same skewing

then try running 3dmark06 in loops.. and see whether ure gc fps sometiemes goes haywire..
so far with the skewing i did above solved all this issue

eh sorry typo had to give back my rampage 2 extreme.. test unit
and sold off the rampage extreme because i am tired and dont think can go further

also last note.. with the skewing above u can reduce ure nb voltage example for 563 fsb from no skewing at 1.61set(1.59set) to skewing at 1.59set( 1.56 true).. i call that worth it...
so far doesnt do much for vdimm voltages for me personally
also y skewing is so important
so far from my experience if i get 4ghz and whatever fsb super stable and all the skewing right.. then upping the multi and vcore is 100% confirmed and trouble free from any ram or nb voltage issues...this is y this mobo can do 4.5ghz confirm stable everytime
the maximus 2 etc.. i can get today 4.5ghz stable 6 hours small fft priority 10.. and again tommorow fail in 3 minutes.. and next day pass 1 hour etc etc.. because of skewing..
vcore voltage reduction ... cmd skews affects this..

    ragheb,

if BIOS settings don't save properly: clear CMOS with switch on IO panel and re-enter settings manually (not from a saved USB profile), or reflash BIOS and enter settings manually. I've always needed to reflash though.

I couldn't get stable on 0501 with CS3222271, I've only found Memtest stability on 0403 and 1001 for these settings.

You are correctly running 1:2 for the posted 450FSB settings. 5:8 is the next ratio down on the 333 strap. If you can stabilise at 450/1:2 (900mhz), then the memory itself will be ok for 563/5:8 (also 900mhz).

563/5:8 gives same Everest Read and Latency scores as 475/1:2, but is achieved with a lower memory clock and vDIMM.

I've included the full settings anyway, in case anyone wants to give them a spin....

worth a bit more work though as 200strap/tRD6 (above 475FSB) gives reasonable performance for CL8.
All other straps are slower with CL8/1:2 at 500FSB.

    that is just pure misinformation

ok ram skewing guide for e8600 + samsung hco 2x2gb dimm a2/b2 the rest u have u test it ureself

    software needed memtest86 / IBT / Orthos

Set to blend.. and then custom min fft 4096 max 4096 priority 10.
try to pass more than 4 hours... take note this is hard.. a lot of test that will pass memtest86/hci memtest will not pass this.
    example the config above trfc 60 pass 35 mins/72 4hours 12 mins/88 24 hours manually stopped
also noted was at 563 fsb fsb termination at 1.19 for IBT but for this test requires 1.29
    have fun

1600 CL7 tRFC 110.. vdimm 1.65 for samsung hco 2x2gb with the same skewing

if you are interested in what the bios skew settings actually change, you can look at mchbar register dumps.

    the offsets are:

for clock fine delay, value in register equates to: 1h = ~50ps values are in delay clock periods. ie. 1T.
This is the register format as anexample.

    At 513h offset = 35h, 5 = Dimm1 (A1) Fine Delay, 3 = Dimm2 (A2) Fine Delay
    At 913h offset = 34h, 4 = Dimm3 (B1) Fine Delay, 3 = Dimm4 (B2) Fine Delay

512h offset = 96h, 6 = Channel A Data Strobe Skew (tDQS) DRAM end of cross clocking, 9 = Channel A Data Strobe Delay Skew MCH end of cross clocking
912h is the same, ie 94h.

Since there is no data from Intel on these registers, their definition is what I understand they reflect. DFI's X48 bios allows these values to be set individually so I'm going off the way they name the options, haven't sat down and double checked on a DFI board but as far as I can tell they should be correct. I've changed their values at the registers manually and ran multiple synthetic benchmarks for each change. The change in memory bandwidth with adjustment reflects DFIs definition of what they do.

    FED14510-11h 00 00
    FED15512-13h 96 35
    FED14910-11h 00 00
    FED14912-13h 94 34

channel A dimm 1+2 clock fine delay is 14513h, channel A address strobe skew is 14512h.
channel B dimm 3+4 clock fine delay is 14913h, ( 1h = 50ps values are in delay clocks ), channel B address strobe skew is 14912h.

Data Strobe Skews may be in nano seconds or cross clock periods, hard to say.

cpu / nb clock skews set the delay from know clockgen turnaround skew on the ic, to when the cpu and nb drive their internal clock waves and meet necessary time to setup/pulldown/complete bus transactions end to end. if there is a setting to change the differential drive amplitude, increasing it gradually as FSB frequency becomes faster and faster can help to limit excess deskew from taking place and give much finer adjustment with a bit of trial and error. this becomes increasingly critical as the period for a clock becomes smaller as frequency gets higher, 100ps will at times be too coarse to obtain stability or consistency.

New BIOS 1003 was on the ASUS website today. It took me a while as it kept going off and on, but I downloaded it. I have gameplay stability where I did not before. I was stable on Linpack, Memtest, etc. but could not achieve gameplay at the high clocks. Now it is seemingly stable with two hours of Crysis Warhead.

    Crossing fingers.

Thanks, much appreciated , you should have all respect for your help.

I´m gonna get back to my RE in a near future to test some more, very interesting board, right now I´m testing Gigabyte EP45-UD3P, great OC for that money I most say.

    Exclamation

Thanks cheapseats for your feedback. Just flashed back to 1001 & reset the CMOS pushing the rear button in the back & manually re-entered all the relevant entries.
Unfortunately I am still getting what looks like the AUTO settings but the weird thing only on the tRCD, tRP, tRAS & PL settings??. But CL, CR & the rest are as I specified in bios..
The thing is that the manual settings are there when I reboot back in bios but for some heck knows reason these are not being retained in WinXP or CPUz is completely wrong & I doubt that very much as Memset is showing exactly the same!!
Anyone has had this odd behaviour before?

Yes - it IS very annoying but I had the same thing with 0801 bios.

What cleared it was to go into the bios load default values-> save & exit and then boot to Windows. Then I restarted and entered the settings manually upon post. It is important not to load any saved profiles from any other bios which also caught me out.
