I say go for the Cololer Master ATCS 840. Don't get me wrong, I love this case.
The ATCS 840 is a little bigger inside and cleaner exterior look! Look Here!

I agree, though i only have used a 690, i've seen both these cases and would suggest ATCS 840 for its "quality" looks...

I'll be getting a HAF for Christmas and plan on painting the inside flat black, but was wondering if
    a) drilling the rivets out was necessary to painting the interior and
    b) if I could get away with a light scuffing of the surface and paint as opposed to priming, etc.

    New System
    Asus Maximus II Formula | E8400 | 4 Gb Corsair Dominator DDR2 1066 5-5-5-12 | Sapphire Radeon 4850 1 Gb
    2 x 500 Gb Seagate 7200.12 Raid0| Supreme FX X-Fi| OCZ Gamextreme 700 watt
    XP 32-bit/Win 7 beta 64-bit| Zallman 9900| HAF 932

    Old System
    GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3R | Pentium D 805 @ 3.7 Ghz | 3 Gb XMS DDR2 800 Mhz 5-5-5-12 | ATI AIW x1900
    2 x 160 Gb Seagate 7200.9 |Audigy 2 ZS | Cooler Master eXtreme Power Plus 500 Watt |Zallman 9500 AT | Lian Li PC61

I didnt take the rivets out, just taped around with blue painters tape after scuffing with 200 grit sand paper. worked great.

Make sure you get spray paint for metal. I used a Matte finish but semi-gloss or even gloos will look pimp

Now powder coating will look great. Too bad nearest shop to me is 190 miles over a snow covered pass, other wise that would have been my route.

I have a crazy urge to paint the entire thing in a black or dark grey pearl and use a combo of blue and white lighting, but for now I have neither the time or cash. Thanks for the info!
