    AMD Plans RV775XT To Compete GeForce GTX285

    AMD Plans RV775XT To Compete GeForce GTX 285

    We were told about a new RV775XT core which is essentially a fine tune version of the RV770. However, little information was revealed at this point of time but i can say AMD is concentrating their efforts on RV740 instead. We are speculating AMD has been collecting the higher speed bins over the months to make this card out to compete against GTX285 offering. It looks exactly the same as the GeForce GTX 280 card but comes with 2 x 6-pin power connectors instead of 8+6 pins. We are able to confirm at this point that it has 240 SPs, 512-bit memory and 1GB GDDR3 memories just like the current GTX280. Expreview has provided more insights on the GeForce GTX 285 like 183W TDP and 110% performance boost over GTX280.

    If it said compete with GTX265 then I might believe it, but with the GTX285? To compete with the GTX285 you need some very special cherry picked chips and they would never be able to deliver enough cards. Would be a paper launch if they tried something like that. So I'd say they want to compete with the GTX265 with it, seems more realistic.

    Is the 285 just going to be a OCed 55nm 280?

    If the GTX285 is only 10% faster than the 280 then it wouldn't be too hard for a tuned/higher clocked 1GB 4870 to compete. Of course as we all know it's incredibly hard to judge "competition" due to constantly changing performance as drivers mature and games get patched.... then theres always those game that favour 1 type of architecture over another.

    oooh, exciting.

    Yup, and lower power consumption, which may also mean there is more overclocking headroom. They should be around 110% of the performance of a GTX280 and their TDP is about 50W lower.

    Basically what this article is trying to say is that ATI is going to give the "Super HD 4870" another kick at the can. You may remember the last time they tried this it resulted in the failure-prone Diamond XOC Black Edition. Hopefully if this article turns out to be correct, ATI will be slightly more successful this time around.

    so in a game that yield's 55fps with gtx280, 285 will give 115? that's 110% performance boost, and that's also high hopes!

    obvious mistake on the 110% sentence :P
    Should be 10% more ofcourse.
    But I'm glad they are at least calling the thing a GTX285 and nog just a GTX280, which would mean you would have to get lucky?

    Does that mean there's gonna be a GTX265 aswell, or is the 55nm version just gonna be 260 aswell?

    And good thing Ati responds right away, keeps competition up!

    Of course not, that job is for R780.

    Well there is only one respin of RV770 which has 3 different names; RV770xtx/RV790 and now RV775.
    R780 was being brought up in B3d as just a way of naming a 4890x2 or whatever it might be with the new binning.
    RV870 is still 40nm.

    RV740 is supposed to be AMD's first 40 nm. GPU. It will be the test chip to see what they can do on 40 nm. and to learn all they can before implementing it on more revolutionary chips. A bit like what RV670 was for AMD, a test chip to check what the 55 nm. node is like. All rumors though, but seems plausible.

    I'm confused is this how it is?

    R740 ~ 40nm R730 (4670)?
    R775 = high binned R770
    R780 ~ 40nm R770
    R790 ~ 40nm R775
    R870 = 40nm new GPU with DX11
    R800 = 2xR870

    Could be. But put simply, there are no solid facts and many of those codenames are made up by some random guy and not by ATI. There are and have been many rumors of a RV740 coming, which would be ATI's first 40 nm. chip, but nobody knows (except ATI and some people whom are under NDA) what the chip will be like. It could simply be a RV730 done on 40 nm., but it just as well be something different.
    Rumors on RV740 so far say it has a 128-bit memory bus and 8-SIMDs, which makes it rather similar to a RV730. But those 8-SIMDs could just as well consist of SIMDs with 16 shader execution units per SIMD. Which would mean the card has 640 SPs, unlike the RV730 which has 8 shader units per SIMD and thus 320 SPs. To me the version with 640 SPs seems plausible as this would slightly increase die size to make sure the chip does not get to small to not allow for a 128-bit bus. By that I mean that the current RV730 might get too small to still be able to put the 128-bit memory bus on there if they did a direct shrink. Just my speculation though.

    arent more and more companies ramping gddr5 production?
    the production capacity should be there to implement it on mass production cards (much more cards than rv770, adding to that demand)

    64bit and that memory wouldnt be a problem... and even cheaper pcb's
    system:

    Phenom II 920 3.5Ghz @ 1.4v, benchstable @ over 3,6Ghz (didnt test higher)

    Gigabyte GA-MA790GP-DS4H
    8gb a-data 4-4-4-12 800

    rip 2x 160gb maxtor(now that adds up to 4...)
