    hi guys

i have an Abit IP35 Pro (bios 18), C2D E8400 (Q817A229, 1.2250V VID, C0) and OCZ 4 Gb DDR2-1066 CL5 KIT. i can't overclock the processor to 4 GHz over 1.4450 VCore... disabled all cpu features (EIST, C1E, etc...) and i set only VCore. whats wrong?

Need some OC advise on the IP35 Pro board with E8400. I have 4GB of G-Skill Pi RAM 4-4-4-12 at 1.9V

My board and chip Oc fine to 3.2, but I would like to run 3.6 stable. I am ignorant to OC'ing and dont know where to begin. I have played with the mult and the FSB, but am lost beyond that. If anyone can give me some good pointers I would appreciate it. I don't know what voltages need to be increased or what other values to change

    Thanks in advance

    Tried increasing vMCH?

What is your RAM's rated speed? Likewise, what CPU : DRAM ratio are you running at?

    The ram is ddr2 800mhz 4-4-4-12 at 1.9V G-skill Pi

The ratio I believe is 67% I believe, whatever stock is. This is where I am unsure where to go

I mostly OC through Bios but here is a pic of th eAGuru utility

I have got 3.2 and was able to do 3.4 for about 5 min adjusting the mult and the fsb only. I have read that 3.6 should be easy with this chip. My problem I believe is that I dont know haw to adjust the following

    CPU GTLREF (both)
    VCore
    MCH

I honestly just want to get 3.6 and be done with it. The comp is air cooled and I live in Phx AZ so ambient is about 70-80F, so I am not trying to break any records here. Any guidance is appreciated

I wish I was the guy above unable to get above 4.0 haha

thank you hokiealumnus. i tired it. 9x445 with 1.3650 VCore and 1.56V MCH, but this options gets bluscreen whilst loading Vista

update: i try my e8400 in an IP35-E and the 4 GHz can't set over 1.4450V VCore anew... wrong piece for tuning?

First, your CPU : DRAM ratio is not 67%, that's your GTLREF, which you should leave alone. The ratio is not accessible through uGuru, only in BIOS. You should be able to set your CPU : DRAM ratio to 1:1, the FSB to 400 and not touch anything else, unless you have a C0 chip. Then there is the unlikely possibility that you may need some Vcore. If it's not stable by just adjusting those two, you could try increasing MCH to, say, 1.31v. Shouldn't need it, but it's possible I suppose.

Easy there killer, we want your NB to survive. Drop vMCH to ~1.44v'ish. That should be enough to get you to 445FSB. Were I to guess, you are also having a RAM issue. Drop the CPU : DRAM ratio to 1:1 for now, underclock your RAM a hair and see if your CPU will make it to 4GHz. You can worry about the RAM later.

    thanks hokiealumnus

i bought a new e8400 (and sold older), SLB9J, E0 and 1.2500V VID. this cpu can run easily on 4 GHz with 1.3xxx VCore. i will try to lower VCoer at tomorrow

i dropped vMCH to default value, thanks

I got to 3.6 by 400Mhz FSB, 1:1 ratio but needed to adjust the MCH to 1.29 (options where 1.29 or 1.33) I then got the BSOD again. So on a whim I upped the VCore to 1.31 and presto, it worked.

Now do I want to decrease one or both of thes until I loose stability, to find the right voltage, or just leave it? My CPU fan has gone up a notch, the temp has always read wrong on this board for me

    Thanks a lot man

    ariec - just a quick n' dirty...

It might help also to set your DDR2 REF at +2%, but trying the GTLREF at 67%. I get much more stability on higher GTLREF as CPU VTT and CPU Core goes up.

Right now I'm doing 458 x 8.5 @ VCore 1.38V setting (1.33V actual) everyday speed, no probs. Other values:

    DDR2 - 1.9V (your RAM will vary)
    MCH - 1.44
    ICHIO - 1.6
    CPU VTT - 1.10
    DDR2 REF - +2%
    ICH - 1.09

Also, try Real Temp 2.70 for better temp readings, and CPUID Hardware Monitor to check VCore values against µGuru's, though I find µGuru's to be pretty good as well.

Thanks for the advise I'll give it a try My RAM is at 1.9 (rated) and I am not trying to go above 3.6.....well maybe 3.8

my problem is that I dont know what ddr2 ref or GTLREF do? all of the answers I find are not very simplified for those of us who dont work with computers for a living (or serious hobby)

I just dont want to set my VCore or MCH higher than needed for the OC as I understand it = more heat and less life

I see no diff in day to day stuff or gaming running at +3.8 GHz or a few hundred MHz less. Maybe I get a few WU's done a little quicker or what have you, but the E8400 is plenty fast at a more reasonable o/c (3.2 - 3.4). I just like to screw with settings & speeds from time to time, or to get some faster benching #'s.

Installed my Q9550 E0 tonight using Bios 17. Problem - after booting-up and going into Windows, the system shuts down b/c it reads that the cpu is at 103c. I reseated the hsf and everything is at stock. When I go into the bios, it will flash 67c for a sec but then goes straight to 103c for cpu. Is this a bios issue and maybe I should try bios 18?

edit - Upgrading to Bio 18 resolved my issues. First, it identified my cpu as a Q9550 which it didn't with bios 17. It also recognized the correct speed 2.83ghz instead of 2.89ghz. When I went to check temps in the bios, it went up to 137c for a second and almost gave me a heart attack but it then dropped down to 37c. It's frickin fast!

I have an IP35 Pro with a core2duo. I had good performance until I updated the Bios to 16. The sata performance became very slow copying from drive to drive. I tried Bios 17 and have the same results.

    Any suggestions ?

Running the Core Temp 0.99.3 at idle and no overclock I'm getting Tj 100C, Core 0&1 49C. No this has a big aftermarket cooler and the fan is blowing, doesn't feel warm.

It seems that I am getting a false high temp and this is throttling the cpu ?

Super pi is 25 seconds so the CPU must be fine.

The HD Tune is a pathetic 4 MB/s on any of my hard drives.

It seems that the motherboard South Bridge is bad ?

glen, I don't know what CPU/stepping you have, but I'm running fine on BIOS 16. Also, try Real Temp 2.70.

    @ ariec -

Once you're stable at a decent speed, say 3.8+ @ 1.38V (in BIOS, 1.33V actual), start backing down the VCore in .01V or .02V increments until not stable. Then go back up .01V until you reach stability again.

On my Q815 (C0 stepping), I can get below 1.30V (actual) well above 3.8GHz. Your particular stepping, etc. may vary of course.

Which mod version isn't working for you? 18.ZZZ?; 17.ZZZZ?; 16.ZZZ?

I did test them all, but anything is possible!

Edit: "DRAM Timing Selectable" has to be set to "Manual" for Performance Level to work. MCHBAR --> "Unlock" takes affect with each cold boot.

    18.zzz
You mean all the dram timing have to be manual so the performance level could be set??
I don't seem to find MCHBAR related option in the bios.

No. "DRAM Timing Selectable" is a individual Item in all the Official BIOS that allows setting all the memory timings if you want, but it's not necessary.

So, "DRAM Timing Selectable" has to be set to "Manual" for Performance Level to work.

Also leave both "Invoke Boot Agent" set to "Enable"(that is the default)

MCHBAR is unlocked by default. I didn't make it selectable.

And, I re-tested all the .ZZZ Mod BIOS and they are all working properly on my setup which is nearly the same as yours...
