would the nb waterblock heatsink on the maximus formula se,work well enough as a passive air heatsink,as in no water going thru it?/
thnx
no, but
ffs wut time is it *dazed & confused* - passive Wb is silly
nn
If you have the non nipple version, a quiet low CFM fan like the one off a Jing Ting NB cooler works extremely well. I stuck some plastic pins in the holes to secure it. It cools about 5-7C better on my setup. Currently running @ 38C or so w/ 1.33V to it.
Images are clickable and I've since cut down the pins to a better size.

With good air flow there is no need to water cool the NB if you have the fuzion block.
I would point a fan at it to help keep temps in check, but as long as your NB stays around 47-50c full load then it wont be an issue
1004 was best for me, but if your Q9550 is E0 you will nedd bios 1207 iirc or higher
Someone correct me if I'm wrong please.

I had a 70mm fan off an AMD stock heatsink on it a while back and it worked wonders. Right now that's a bit too big for the Noctua I have on there right now. I just used a couple screws from the heatsink to put it in there (watching for any metal that may have come off the heatsink when the screws went in of course).
i'm in need of new ram for my MF. i'm looking for a 2x2gig kit, whick kits are running the best in this board?
i'm running a q6600 and is very picky with settings while running 4x1gig sticks. its wierd because with a e8400 4x1gig is easy as pie.
2600k @ 5.0, msi z68-gd65, evga gtx 470, 4x2gig Mushkin Redline 1886, 3x74gig raptors in raid0, pa120.3 push/pull, d5, swiftech apogee HD
What runs best in what terms?
Do you want high performance RAM or value RAM?
Nearly any stick does it job pretty well on the MF / RF board and the overclocking potential is mainly determined by the chipset used.
If you want high quality RAM then simply get G.Skill / Cellshock / Team Xtreme and the likes. Just check the DDR2 list I posted here before (not mine) and see what sticks got Micron chips or Google the ones you find in the net and see whether they clock high.
There's another very good (newer) chip out there just like the two top-end Microns, but I forgot what it's called.
Unfortunately, I've got the C1 version with a vid 1.200, got it from a friend, it's from april this year, I have the 1207 bios installed
right now I have 3.6 (8.5x 400) strap 333, on 1.185 cpu v ??? and it's quite stable.
I booted 3.74 but didn't get it stable yet, My aim is 450x8,5 but still no luck in booting to it((
Would you think that bios change could do the trick? I mean downgrade the bios from the newest version?
Maybe somenoe can post his setting to achieve that?)thx!
Or maybe I need higher operating RAM?? I mean at least 1066mhz hmmm I'm a bit lost here,on my q6600 it worked 450x8 easy on strap 400, and i had stable 3.6, is there a fsb problem over 400mhz with this cpu?

has ne1 tested Bios version 0701 for Rampage Formula dated 11/27/2008?
When I had my Q9550 in the Maximus X38 running Rampage bios 308 my max was 433 FSB anything above that it would not post.
Rampage bios 701 is supposed to resolve this issue, this is why I ask'd if anyone tested it yet.
My Q9950 on M2F will hit 496FSb so its not a cpu problem its a chipset issue.
Here is my rampage 3.825GHz setting, I'm sure you could adapt it

i'm looking for a 4gig kit thats NOT micron based and can run 1066-1100mhz. i dont want to spend $300 on the 1200mhz gskills, i want to try and keep the price at about 100 or less.
i have a set of 2x1gig axerams that run 1280mhz, but i really need 4gigs for what i do.
i'm just asking what 4gig kits people have had good luck running with a q6600.
like i said in a previous post, with a e8400 in my MF i can run 4x1gigs at 1150 no sweat, but put the quad in and it gets very picky about settings and needs 2.3volts on the dram and 1.7 on the nb for 24/7 stability.

Many good kits out there
imo avoid OCZ and Crucial
1. Corsair (any model)
2. GSkill

Since I picked up 8GBs of the 7200s, my PC2-8500 G.Skills 4GB kit is up for sale. The sticks do 1100+ easy. I managed to push them all the way to 1180 one time. These are very good sticks, I've seen no other sticks of this particular series reach the frequency these sticks have. PM me if interested.
PS: I'll be posting my results with the 7200s soon.

to update the Rampage bios on the Maximus Formula do I need to use Afudos again? or can I use Asus update? I'm brave, I'll test the 0701 release.

I'm sharing my results with the F2-7200CL4PI-B. I made a separate thread just to see if there are any other sticks with > or similar results; no biters yet

Not bad at all imo; and once again, I need modest volts for the NB with 8GBs and FSB of 471.Quad 32m prime stable. The very low timings are what blows me away though. I was thinking this would translate into higher max frequency on CL5, but I was wrong. This seems more a product of the Ics themselves. It's close to perfect for me, but I'm still tweaking cpu volts, as well as pushing for 475fsb 1:1. Enjoy!

4x2GB G.Skill PC2-7200 CL4 @ 942mhz, 1:1, PL7 with the following settings:
Primary: 4-4-3-9-1-40-4-2
Secondary: 7-2-4-4-6-4-6
Tertiary: 11-4-1-4-4
Volts are in the screenies....
Windows Server 2008 x64 (Everyday OS)
My 24/7... not fully tweaked yet.
Same...
475fsb
500FSB CL5 with the quad is easy, but only possible at PL9; though all pull-in phases on CHA can be enabled. Does that make it a PL8.5?Don't ask me.
