Hehe... I did inquire about those P6T water blocks but they were too expensive. DangerDen is going to send me a new top for my MPC-X38 which I will use on the NB, and my Fuzion V2 of course on the CPU. I have the Thermalright HR-09 MOSFET coolers which I am using on my Rampage Formula, but I will migrate them to the P6T Deluxe. The SB will be passively cooled with a solid copper Enzotech heatsink, also currently being used on my Rampage Formula.

Can anyone verify that vista sleep mode works on a P6T? It does not on a giga x58-ud5, so I'm thinking about switching to P6T.

Hey guys, I just tried this 'Sleep' thing on the start menu (never used it before?!), I assume that's what you're talking about, and it stopped and resumed just fine. That what you were wondering about?

That would be it. It appears to be broken on the Gigabyte X58's.

    Thanks!

Quick question: What were you guys' stock temps on after-market air?

Right now, cooled by a Noctua NH-U12P (air), my RealTemp is giving me Min= 29, 29, 22, 22 and Max= 33, 33, 27, 27 @ 2717ghz (OC due to Asus EPU-6 turbo mode). Are these good or normal temps?

Update on Sleep mode...It does work, but only if HT is enabled. Seems this is 100% repeatable, if HT on, sleep mode works properly, if HT off, computer goes into SM, but hangs with a blank screen when try to resume and must reboot.

I managed to get a 3dmark vantage run with my 920 @4.0 and my sli 280s @ 700. I am still on the release bios. Is the new bios much better and does it offer anymore settings?

From what I was told by others the new bios don't help or hinder OC, apparently it just had fixed for other stuff.

From what I can tell it seems to depend on rather or not you got a "hot chip" from Intel. There are people on water who are gettong 90 degrees at 3.8ghz, and there are people here who have reached 4.0ghz on air. I'm definately new to OCing, but I think it is safe to say that there are two factors that effect the OC. Luck. And how good of an OCer you are.
I'm like you, still waiting on parts. Remember though, just saying "on water" doesn't say it all. I expect my 940 to be hot, yeah, but 90c is screaming hot for a good loop. I'd really like to see the specifics of a water cooler that allows temps like that within an acceptable operating range of settings.

I finally got all my parts but am still in the process of making myself at home and moving files over before I OC. Plus I'd like to learn a bit more, since I've never done this before.

What I really wish somebody here would do is make an idiot's guide to i7 P6T OCing. I'd love to have a photo walk through..... with pics of the bios and steps, explainations and warnings etc.

You only learn by doing it and blowing components to the moon.
For sure you can read a lot, but in the end it is all by doing so.

A small peace of advice: keep notes and write every step you are doing/changing down. This way you can always read back to what worked and what did not.

Reportedly, R2E has the same problem. I personally have not experienced it, but like I said, other people have and have complained about it. Quite likely a BIOS problem?! I hope...

You guys know that this new gen has tri-channel memory, right? So it likes 3, 6, and 12 GB amounts of RAM best, because it preferes 3 & 6 slot configs. In the same way that old boards liked 2 and 4 slots.

Make sure you have your ram in the correct slots.

My experience... I tried to set bclk to 165 thinking that would be somewhat of a mild overclock. Crash! After much trial and error I found that I can run bclk at 150 and finish a 3dmark06. Everything else on auto. I then set bclk back to 133 and started testing my ram out. I can run XMP mode with no trouble but could not touch bclk at all. I could even run XMP with memory at 1.5v. So this leads me to believe my ram is not up to snuff.

I then manually set the ram to the lowest speed I could bumped bclk to 175. Sure enough it worked I ran a 3dmark06 and broke 22k. I am returning my ram and I am going to try the G.Skill PI Black. I am now at bclk 185 and memory is at 555mhz. What I don't get is how I could run my ram at 800mhz while using MXP but I can't set my ram to auto and get past 150 bclk. I know I still still need to learn more but I am happy to see that my CPU may some day break 4k. Never really had a great rig for overclocking except for way back when you could clock a 300mhz celeron to 400mhz but I am running at 3700 right now and I made my goal of building a machine that breaks 20k in 3dmark06.

    replacing patriot mem...

Amazing difference from the crappy 7950x2 dud of a card and the amd 4800+ processor I just abandoned.

UPDATE well I have the G.Skill black and get the exact same results so it has to be something I am doing or my CPU is not capable of controlling the memory correctly when the memory is running fast and the cpu is running fast. I can clock the memory with the XMP profile and it works fine but I am certain that performance is better when I set the memory to as slow as possible and the cpu as fast as possible. This is with everything enabled so I might try to disable hardware prefetcher in the future... Having too much fun playing games now so I am not going to mess with it. I think I will save the new ram and the old ram since they both pass running with XMP and now I have 12gigs ... crazy

Never mind that I knew the ram I purchased was better, it will be a while before I ever need more than 4gigs, let alone 6. I decided that I must use only the new stuff... it is 88821 ram not 99924 ram so I went bravely into the bios to make sense of it all... I clocked a 23k 3dmark after getting the XMP profile working and the new ram clocks at 740mhz instead of 550. This is with almost everything set on auto and a bclk of 186. So faster ram by 200mhz will raise you about 500 points in a 3dmark06. The gskill black is better ram. It did not boot when I set the ram to the next level up and 3dmark06 crashes at 187bclk. None of the voltages have been raised except cpu is at 1.25. I doubt I need the core that high. HT and all the goodies and the core sits between 55 and 60. I have seen 76 but it doesn't matter. This is just great for what I spent. I do wish I could hit 200 but the reality is I force games to sync so the processor stays cool and going above 60fps is just extra heat. It is looking like the CPU is the limiting factor unless the 904 bios is... but why RMA the core since I could get a worse one.

Yes, but the issue is wether or not it works with hyperthreading disabled. Could you disable HT in BIOS and retest and let us know?

    Hey guys ..

Though I would introduce myself to the P6T/i7 club here ..

I've managed to get a fairly stable 4Ghz HTOn setup .. but the 1.4V it takes are sending my temps through the roof on cores #1-3 .. see my post & pics in the main thread ..

Can anyone help me out ? I'm gonna reseat the Noctua this weekend if anyones got good TIM application tips please let me know ..

    Age.

PS. Happy snaps of my build here if anyones interested .. http://s206.photobucket.com/albums/b...kled10/New_PC/

I'm wondering whether a move to watercooling will lower those temps a bit, or whether these chips are just gonna be damn hot when running at 150% no matter what.

Yeah .. I've been benching all evening I cant get stable at 1.375 .. 1.4V is my go .. nice and cinebench stable around 90C .. prime @ high 90's ..

Gonna refit the Noctua this w/e see if it makes any diff .. prob not .. but I'm happy with the high temps for a stable 4.0Ghz HT On .. Crysis only pushes temps to mid 50's anyway ..

I'm just tryin to future proof the chip for gaming that might demand a 4.0Ghz HT OC in 12-18 months .. when the GTX 395 comes out
