got some constructive crits for you guys

@bentleya: your model is fairly simple, and from your render it appears massive though. also at a quick glance your model falls back into the background, and aside from the separation of colors the render is fairly dull. maybe think about real world scale and modeling from dimensions would help too. I say design something more interesting and put more contrast in your renderings. if your looking to make the renders as real as possible then never leave an edge a perfect point, no matter how sharp it man be to the naked eye, there is a small radius which will catch light. those edges make your object appear more realistic and will make your render overall more interesting to look at.

@Metric: your models and renders are interesting. some stuff i to bentleya applys to you too. your objects all have those harsh edges which is a dead give away in a visual stance. your renders have contrast but i dont think theres enough, and the lighting choose and materials make your objects very busy and hard to understand. i can see that your having fun with it which is good, im not sure if youre modeling to dimension but your scale seems ok.

@Mick64: Overall, it looks like a good start, all crits above apply. you can see and count the sides on the hold down plate and the hard edges. now im not sure if its the modeler which is the issue but that can be improved. the render has a lot of colors and looks very interesting but were soo close to the block i cant get a good understanding of what it really is.

@RLM: great job on the modeling and materials. only crit i got is contrast between the object and the background and some of the materials (ie- the copper, black oxide screws) the copper looks like the IOR is too low, and the black oxide screws look like they got a nice clear coat on it. but i do like the acrylic material on the EK, very convincing and the exploded views are very nice as well.

overall, i think this is going to be a fun thread. everyone can get educated, learn, take something away from this thread.

hey bentleya, see in your first render how between the block and the top gets all messed up, easiest way ive gotten around that was to literally make the top and bottom intersect, if you dont get what i mean i hope you understand this

Evil-98: Thanks for the input and all of my models are to actual scale and size. I took your advice and tried to smooth any of the sharp edges (Google Sketchup really needs a lozenge tool for edges :x)

    Mick64 that looks great

One thing to look at though is the metalic finish. Just my opinion but it's a bit too shiney/mirror like.

I've got a barb in my hand, if I look at it I can see very small grooved rings and tiny pitted bumps. It's this that gives the blurred reflections.

To achieve more realism it comes down to close observation and sometimes adding those small imperfections.

So basically I would try adding some subtle procedural bump mapping to the surface. A micro grain bump map for instance.

In addition you can try adding fresnel or an incidence gradient fall off to your reflection map. Objects do tend to reflect more or less depending on the viewing angle.

Nice Mick, maybe try to mix it up and have some variations with Delrin tops and maybe nickel plating?

Some possible finishes for mine that I came up with:

Wow, at first glance I would have thought these were photos.... Especially Evil98's....

You guys do good work. Why aren't the WC companies contacting you for new designs....

I like the idea of the three port. I assume the middle is inlet and the other two or outlets.... If so, would be a great way to add mosfet/chipset blocks to a loop.

    keep up the great work!

Not too bad Bentleya, try enabling soft shadows under the lighting options for more realism
