Try to run CpuZ right after Windows booted or try to load only one core and then keep eye on frequency and multiplier ;-)

If you don't know how it doesn't mean it's fake (for others: it's a little bit of rivality in Czech rep.). For such purposes is here CpuZ validation.

Turbo Boost influence (on 965 XE).

Triple vs. dual vs. single channel on i7 920

    Performance of Core i7 920 @ 3,75 GHz + Turbo Boost

According to Tom's Turbo Mode is only for the extreme edition. Don't know if that applies to the models being tested now.

This is BIOS screen from Asus P6T Deluxe with Core i7 920:

If you enable Intel SpeedStep, you get Intel Turbo option.

It can't be forced at all :-). Some tips and tricks:
    1. Turbo works according to load and temperature (?)
    2. Right after Windows started, run Cpu-Z
    3. I personally get the max. freq for CpuZ with Prime95 25.6, 1 thread, Blend, but it's possible to get mult. 22 without it - Vista boot (and loading of drivers and background running apps) generates some load which should be enough
    4. Save your CpuZ validation file every second to another file - in one of this files could be the highest frequency - in my case multiplier 22 appears for short time every 10-20 seconds

22 isnt real for quad core aplication. When you launch prime95 , wprime or cinebench it goes down to 20X.

Max screen on air (maybe a little more because after i hit 217mhz Blck in 12X multi.

    Max prime stable on air.

People you are all posting awesome overclocks... but what about the Overspeed Protection? Shouldn't it limit your OCs to 100A and 130W (except for Extreme versions of course)? If not, how can it be possible?

There is a program LINPACK for solving systems of linear algebraic equations [treatment matrix?]. Result Gflops. LINPACK 64: Q6600 @ 3000 ~ 40Gflops. Core = 10GFlops = 40Gflops/4.
    There is a maximum result 106100 GFlops (106.1TFlops). 8200EX = 2560 * E54xx. At the core of 10.36GFlops (106100/10240 or 106100/2560/4).
    LINPACK 64 or 32: Core i7 GFlops?

From my understanding only intel board limit the chip

Read it in one of the 40+ reviews/benches flying around, will try find it back , but must be written somewhere on this forum

    4.2 ghz i7 920 very nice.

is that 80* c loaded stock cooler or just idle?
    Is it stable?

    How much is it consuming?

From reviews overclocking that high caused a 50w increase idle and 150w increase load.

Which would mean it'd be hard to air cool it?
With that on top of TDP I feel like even a TRUE would get toasted.

Also what's the highest voltage via Intel Specs?
Through all this overclocking I didn't see anyone mention that oddly.
I would think it'd be on the box.

    I read this at Overclockersclub:

"To keep the CPU from throttling under load you can increase the "current limit" override as well as the "power limit" override in the DX58 Smackover motherboard BIOS."

    Edit:
On any decent motherboard, this option should be available in the bios for any Core i7 CPU.

Yes it is hard to air cool, limited availability of coolers doesn't help either. I believe the key to breaking through to 4.5GHz will be keeping the thermal transients low.

firingsquad's review make it seems like, due to the turbo mode, its possible to permanently set the multi up two notches with 4 cores enabled, without the automatic changes going on.

Not 100% sure yet of the details of how that works exactly. How much control do we have over this feature etc... Can anyone link me to something reliable that explains it all ? Thanks

EDIT: After reading some more, it seems like those who cant keet the multi up with 4 cores activated may he hitting the Power Control Unit temp ceiling.... I wonder if they were water cooled it would be possible to keep the multi up by 2 w/ all 4 cores activated and loaded.

Or the Turbo mode multi changes can only be dinamic, relative to the workload instead of temps ?

The CPU-Z gif in the link shows the multi changing depending on the PRIME load, but I dont know if rising temp is the cause:

I am to be VERY VERY clear, there is not Overspeed Protection, we have a BIOS setting to bypass the PCU control of Current and Power. On smackover, it is call "CPU VR Current Limit Override", and it will allow you to bypass the thermal and courant limites on the Core i7 920 ans 940. Who ever claim the otherway around did not read the specifications enough hehehhe
we have recommanded to the motherboard makers to follow our steps.
So, relax, and don't worry ...

I guess Tom forgot to read the manual? So with that said, is there any reason to get a 940 over a 920?

    RealTemp 2.83

The latest version of RealTemp has been updated to read TjMax from the Core i7 processors:

Lots of other new features too if you haven't updated since version 2.70

HMM, maybe not.. Mine has been at 100% load for the last 48 hours and is running like a champ and it ain't that bad considering it's on room air..
See any faster on air on this page? Yes, It's a smackover board I'm using!
