IRONMODS: AMD Phenom 9950BE SubZero Fun

    Hey Guys,

I have been MIA in OC’ing for little over a year now. Overclocking took a back seat to case modding, and my HWBot points and ranking took a nosedive (5th to 134th). Now I got the itch for speed again and want to bring my rank back up!!

Everyone with the 9950BE / SB750 seem to be having a great time, so I wanted to join in on the fun. The AMD Phenom x4 9950 Black Edition is the perfect chip to get back into benching So here are the current system specs:

    CPU: AMD Phenom x4 9950 BE 120w 0831
    Motherboard: Asus M3A79-T Delux 0401
    Video: AMD 3870 (temporary)
    RAM: (2x1GB) Crucial Ballistix PC2-6400
    Power Supply: Silverstone Strider ST85F
    Cooling: Jinu Single Stage Phase

Here are my initial results from a night of benching. The 9950BE is really fun to bench. I forgot how enjoyable and addicting benching can be :P

    CPUz @ 3.86Ghz
    http://valid.x86-secret.com/show_oc.php?id=424930

    1mb Spi @ 21.172s

    piFast @ 31.98

Those were some initial runs with this setup. I am going to go through the gauntlet on Single Stage, and tweak to see how fast everything can run.

If the chip is still running, I will take it to DICE. If it makes it through DICE'ing.. then we will have some LN2 fun.

what's the chip temps staying above 0C ?

    we've seen a 9850 be at 4.0 3.8ghz bench able.

maybe this 9950 will get higher hopefully.

great stuff. be sure to read carefully through the important phenom threads. there can be a lot of hidden megahurtzes if you tweak the right settings

    Hey demonkevy666,

Wow.. 9850's were hitting 4Ghz and benchign at 3.8. That is just awesome. I might have to go check it out Do you have a link to that thread? I might be able to get some tips

With my 1st initial run.. i am having trouble benchign about 3.7Ghz. Hopefully with a little more tweaking, I can bench closer to 4Ghz.

These were all quick runs. So the temp never went positive. I tried adding more voltagate 1.60 ~ 1.7.. didn't really notice any gains

As i mentioned.. more tweaking will hopefully unlock more speed.

I hope to get some Spi32MB runs tonight, and see how that goes. Then I can see if the temps goes positive or not.

Thanks.. yup. i've been reading and reading. Lots of good stuff. So many things to tweak and test. I wonder if there is a way to quickly dump all the setting in BIOS to a text file.

    There go my hwbot points.
What ACC setting do you use? Should be >2+ for those speeds and voltages. SOF whom did 4GHz reported he used up to 6+.

    Hey Justapost.

I believe i used 2+ or 4+ for ALL cores. I have went to like 12+, but didn't really see any increase. In fact at 12+, I have boot issues.

Does SOF have any screen cap or details on how he got to 4Ghz?

There is alot of tweaking items I am not familar with on thie board, like Skew, VDDA, and so forth. I may post a few questions on teh other thread.

That ACC 6+ thing is the only thing he said about which i remember, but his thread is somewhere here in the AMD section.

I'd only increase ACC if increasing voltage does not help. Frequency voltage and ACC need to be in balance. Higest voltage i ran stable on water was 1.65V on GBT790GX but had no benefit over 1.575V at 3.4GHz.

Do you think you can get a sub 10s wPrime 32m?

Hey.. thanks for the link to SoF thread. I have some more insight into the 9950 and SB750 Thanks for the pointer. Hopefully I will be able to yield higher results

I will run Cinebench when I get a chance. i am still tweaking the memory and overall speed of the setup. I am not familar w/ Cinebench, since its not on HWBOT :P Where can I download it from?

    Hey Jaivan,

I looked, andyou got some nice scores. Its going to be a challenge to top it. I just now need to figure out the tweaks for Wprime vs SuperPi :P

PS - Checked out your TJ07 project. Its looking really nice. I was only able to put (2) 240 rads.. can't believe you are going for 3. Best of luck!!

    Hey SoF,

lol.. yeah.. 1m vs 1mb.. sorry.. my bad.. i just know its 1m* :P Your 1m SuperPi score is just awesome. you are the one that broke the 20s barrier.. so you are definetly a pioneer. I was just trying to play "Catch Up" to you, since you had teh best score. If you get the chip back, I know my score will definitely be in trouble

hey still trying to figure out how you do that high nb speed or if it missreading. I am missing an nb divider in my a79s bios at all so I would really happy to see some 250htt bench at ~3.9gig 1m from you if possible. I think this will be remarkable slower. so far can't think I'll get a good chip within a short time so take your time at the amd top spot congratz and keep testing. waiting for your dual channel tests

SoF you don't have NB-FID or NB multi in your bios? You can use BarEdit to change the NB multi. Stephen has a thread here about barcelona overclocking which describes how to change the nb multi. Or look for NB-FID in the BKDG. A reboot is required to apply the modification.
