1) an 8 indicates single (8 ram chips on 1 side) and 16 double (8 ram each side).
2) under the heatspreaders see if you can see ram chips on both sides.

The single-sided don't go over 400 fsb too much - 425 maybe.
The double-sided 450-500 depending on timings and volts.

You might want to check every stick - you might be mixing single and double sided ram if you are running 4 sticks. I rma'ed a single-sided pair and got double-sided back for instance.
