Happy to report that fold7 stayed happy folding all night. Those fans certainly have helped. I didn't mention the other benefit to having my crunchers in the closet - on the cold winter mornings when I get up and get ready for work my clothes are nice and warm

thanks for the OC tips guys. Using Rivatuner, I set GPU and mem clock back to stock (700/1050) and bumped Shader clock to 1875. Now we play the waiting game and hope it works! Thanks!

Internet at school was dead for the past hour or so, made my one GPU sit idle all this time If it isn't the server going up/down/up/down it is the connection at school going barmy

It's not the network. It's the people running it.

I have no idea what happened, all I know is this morning the ENTIRE wireless at school disappeared. The AP controller must have gotten screwed up, rebooted, or something. Also, about the same time the entire school had the internet konk out in random places and people's network drives in offices disconnected. Whatever it was, it caused a lot of trouble.

Wait a minute... Most of the troubles while I worked there were the older full-time people in the department.

Anyone else have this problem, after about a week of crunching my rig will freeze up, no response from the kb/m This happened with my 3870/9800GTX+ under XP and Vista I would have just said it was the client but the rig with the 8800GT has been going along just fine. I put my 9800 back to stock, hopefully it won't happen again...

It's funny, gaming is fine, folding is fine, yet it'll just lock up out of nowhere and i have to reboot.

I've been thinkin about getting into folding. I have this powerful system. and I use it for gaming, editing, encoding, benching and what not. But it only gets used the last few hours of everyday.

How often do you guys fold.? is the PC on 24/7 and how much of the PC's resources does it use. or can you set the level it takes.. like 25%, 75%, or all 100% If I'd like?

I don't know ANYTHING AT all about F@H, other then I've went to the site and read about it, and that it could help find cures.. My grandpa recently Died of Cancer. He helped raise me so I miss him dearly.
Maybe my system could be put to some better use. Let me know.

If anyone has some good, general informative info on the process and everything else about it. I'd appreciate the 411.

    Thanks!

I gotta leave for work real quick but here's a brief rundown:

You can fold however long you like. Of course 24/7 nets you the most output but that is up to you. I run 24/7, some people here run 12/7. Depending on which client you run, it either takes 100% CPU and is a low priority process so if you need to do anything else it gives up the CPU. If you are benching or encoding you might want to shut down F@H for that, but gaming, editing, web browsing, and all that you really won't notice a slowdown. There is also a client for the nvidia GPUs. You can get massive output from the GPU. I suggest pausing the GPU client when gaming. If you want to go all out, You can run the SMP client on your CPU and the GPU client on your GPU, this works best in Vista as it handles multitasking and multiple cores and threads like that better than XP.

THe GPU client is mostly trouble-free, I've not had any issues with it. Just have to have the right set of drivers for it (You need CUDA drivers). The SMP client needs a little more attention, it'll run just fine for a while then it may have a fit occasionally. I'll go into more detail on how to deal with that and how to avoid some of the issues. There is the old tried and true uniprocessor client as well, but four of those running has much less performance than the SMP client.

I'll see if I can get you more info later when I have more time but I gotta leave now.

I was the same way - i built my system for the same reasons and then started to think about folding after I realized I don't use it that much.

How often do you guys fold.? is the PC on 24/7 and how much of the PC's resources does it use. or can you set the level it takes.. like 25%, 75%, or all 100% If I'd like?
almost 24/7. It uses 100% but its low priority so for the most part it doesn't effect normal computer usage. When i'm doing something like playing doom3 or video encoding i'll suspend the processes until I'm done, and then I'll get back to folding right after.

I don't know ANYTHING AT all about F@H, other then I've went to the site and read about it, and that it could help find cures.. My grandpa recently Died of Cancer. He helped raise me so I miss him dearly.

My mother passed of cancer only a year ago, we didn't know she had cancer at all until it was too late (stage 4 lung cancer - non smoker). My grandma just got diagnosed with stage 3 cervical 1 week ago. Not being a doctor like some of my friends, I do what I can to help give them the tools to help people like my mother & grandmother and then rely on them to do the hard work. Basically, there is no reason not to fold unless you can't afford your power bills to begin with.

The first thing to know is that you can run multiple instances of the folding application. First, your CPU can run a couple because it is a quad. Next, that video card of yours will go a long way and generate a lot of PPD (points per day) which is how we base each user's performance. The real reason people get so addicted to folding is that it has a slight competitive atmosphere. It doesn't matter if you can only do 500PPD or if you can do 500,000PPD, either way you are contributing to the cause. But man is it fun when you pump out the points and watch yourself climb towards the top of the highest producers

I started folding not even a month ago and I don't think I'll ever stop now. It costs me a few bucks extra each month in power bills but I look at it as a donation of sorts. Because in the end, if I can help prevent me, my family, my friends, or even complete strangers from dying of some ty disease - it's worth it.

Great. I'm back home for the weekend. I just checked my stats at the update and I got 0 for the 9PM update. Means something most likely went wrong back at school, either the internet died there again or fold7 hung and disconnected my machines won't know until Sunday..hopefully it is a brief bug that is school's issue and things work again later instead of halting my production for the weekend... sigh I miss reliable internet that just worked even when I walked away from it.

I've never had a beast of a machine, but this is what i always wondered...say there are people on this forum who spend thousands on uber hardware, bench it, yay, then what? After i'm done OCing it's like ok now what? Play some games ok, after you're done then what? Turn it off Seems just kinda lame to spend all this money for yourself and only use it for a few hours IDK, that's just how i felt. I remember when my brother bought a super duper PC just to run some chess program, i was like cool, but that's it? Seems we have a lot of horsepower might as well put it to good use, yes?

I had 2 boxes going 24/7, my rig with a C2D/9800gtx+, family PC with an X2/8800gt, but i only run the family PC during the day now because i got yelled at when the electric bill came I'm the only child living here now and i guess it was kinda high, should have just used the $100 for the 8800 on some RAM for my rig....or stop using the plasma TV /rant

My 8800GT bit the dust a couple of days ago, just as I setup GPU folding

Hopefully they will replace it ASAP. It's the first time ever in my 10 years of working with PC's that a graphics card has died on me.

Looks like it was just a hiccup of some sort, I see numbers coming in after that one update of 0 so that's a good thing

It's a Point of view branded card.

No mention of warranty returns on their site or in the manual so I had to email Ebuyer for replacement.

As soon as it comes back I'm selling it anyway along with all of my hardware so I can setup my GPU farm

Why set up a GPU farm.. do they push PPD much better than CPU's?
Yea I have a great system. could only get slightly better. but the GTX280's run so hot that I'd rather have my 260. I had a 280 that got aorund 105c, and up to 109c in games so i went down to this. saved the leftovers and it went towards my new shiny amazing CPU. Oh and sorry to hear about the 8800GT.

Well I see all yours guys points here. I have this great system and might as well put it to use. I do a lot with it. Like I said above. I game, I encode, burn DVD's. Bench, Play many many games. I buy/sell on ebay. I help manage a forum. I actually also teach people how to achieve medium/high overclocks on Intels at another site. lol. but other then that I've spent all this time and money getting this thing up, and just like you guys have said. OK. I've finally got over 19k in Mark06.. now what. lol. Get another 260 and push for 4.4 Ghz then get 22k.. Wont do me the least bit of good.. give me a e-peen. oh well.
And yes, my grandpa was very close to me. He was the nicest man I've ever known.

Also, I'm not trying to sound mean, Selfish, or offend/upset anyone here with this. but even though i have this machine and all. & should put it to use. I also think. I've spent ALL this money on this. Learned so many things. use it daily. Something like a 100% 12/7 or 24/7, or even 24/5 loading up the computer.. that would severely shorten the life of the system right. Not trying to be selfish, but you see my point. this all cost a pretty penny. What type of wear and tear does folding add to your system overall.. Oh and here is even a better question. How much did your power bills rise with running this. As mine is already high enough. I live in vegas, It's a hot desert but finally cooling down. these past months for summer my power bill was around $340 or so a month. thats SOO high, I freaked when I saw $365.
I know thats a lot of the AC. so soon it wont be that high, but how much would that rise doing a 24/5 run of Folding?? Also I've only had this computer for about 4 months. So it plus summer jacked up my bill. I wonder how much just this system alone adds to the bill.

So, If the Wear and tear is a somewhat big part, or the Power Bill isn't to large. I could always use my old parts for a folder. I have a Spare Q6700 in my closet that hits 3.7 Ghz. have 1GB Ram, I could get a $80 Mobo. and I have a BlueOrb II cooler, a old Compaq case, and a spare 250w PSU. So thats almost a system there. it could be my folder.. but then I wouldn't have the GTX power.
Anyways I'm just curious, and thinkin out loud here a little bit. Let me know how much this affects ur power bill. (I'm sure different systems will be different, but in general.. ya know)

Also Sparky, thanks for the Info. I appreciate the 411 there.. and what the.. do you honestly have 7 systems running F@H. thats amazing. well done Sir. I have a A64 Dual 5400+ sitting around here somewhere... Hmmm lol

To be honest lad I didn't found the GTX280 Running hot if you play with it a little, at folding I have rarely 65+
And first think about it don't jump into it by head

As por the power bill ..... Oooooh ... USA prices, my bill for september was 24$

Sparky it's just Sparky if something happends and someone says Sparky is involved ... everyone understands and takes it the way it is.

24 dollars.. i HATE YOU.. haha. Well it's been over 105F here for 4 months and I keep the house at 78F in summer just so the AC isn't going all day, only most the day. so that could have been part of it. Never know. lol.

and my GTX280 was very hot. It was actually faulty. as it would get to 109c in every game within about 5-10 seconds.. yes seconds. the fan would start pulsating up and down really hard. then at 110c it would crash.. Not cool. I love my 260 though. it rocks at 740 Mhz core.

back to the folding. so it didn't increase power bill all that much?
also Kondik. how well does that IFX cool ur Q9550.? I want something new for my q9650. I'm not likin the Tuniq anymore.

Edit*. Thanks to MikeB for a great Quick and simple guide he posted I am already up and going people.
I just started my first Fold for XS.. my first fold EVER.. and you guys get the pleasure of my sweet system adding some points. not many. but every bit counts. I'm only running my GTX260 right now. and I'm still figuring out all I need for my quad stuff since no tray.

I switched it for TRUE 120 X yesterday evening, because the IFX14 was HUGE the far right fin section touched the RAM modules so I could not put there a fan and when I attached it to the other side for suck not blow ... it sucked

Well See it for your self http://www.ninjutsu.tym.cz/lair/image035.jpg , with lover RAM modules I could fit it in and the temps would be better, not with the TRUE 120 X and two P12 on it I have much lower temps, intead of 75 in Linpack x64 I have around 68 and while Folding I have 45 ~ 50 instead of 60 I had before. With the corect FAN positionin ghe IFX would be probably better but I can't do that..
