    nanofluid!

ok so a guy got on another forum I get on a while back and asked people if they thought of trying nanofluid and a member jumped all over him so to speak.
I PMed the guy and said I would like to know more about this stuff I am willing to see how it works for my systems. I crunch so my systems are always 100% load.

    I have a cheap mobo ECS G31T-M v-1.0
With a E6600 running at the time stock speed.
The waterblock on this chip is my OLD maze4 that I made a hold down for, This system was crunching right along with core temps 32c, 32c and room temp at 23.9c again 100%load

So I got all my loop drained and put the nanofluid in and decided at the last min that the stuff looked kind of heavy so I added a little maybe 8-10 OZ. of distilled water. Boot the system back up and room temp was 25c and still stock speed with core temps the same 32c, 32c

I hurt my thumb and have not had time to mess with it at all so it has been chugging right a long in my barn. about 3 weeks go by. I decide to check on it. Well room temp was down some but didn't check it. I decided to up the FSB a little. I took it up making the chip run 2.777. One week later my I go look at it. Room temps are 28.9c my cores are 36c 36c. Still running 100%

I cant say much about if this stuff is great or not yet but I can say it helps keep my temps down when I took up the FSB. I expected it to go up 1 or 2 degrees. That is what normaly happens but it didn't.

here is a pic of my system running the pump is a D5 (you can't see it) Here is also a pic of the bottle of nanofluid.

LOL you will have to tell the guy that sent it to me that. 2 of them worked for months to get the mixture write for the military applications. one of them was interested in water cooling his system and decided to try this stuff in there.

LoL, you did good on the pics, but we want to see it on a quad!!!

Seriously though, I would like to see some more testing done. Does this nan fluid have a smell to it? I wonder what would happen if you diluted it some more? Does the pump seem like its working harder? Oh so many questions

I am thinking about putting it on my wifes B3 quad. hehe don't tell her!!!!!

does it smell no. does the pump work harder no! I want to do the loop again but this time I don't want to dilute it at all. I think that hurt me some.

What exactly is this kind of stuff? I assume it's some kind of high-performance liquid and non conductive?

yes it is conductive. all Water is conductive. if someone tells you that liquid is non conductive they are lying to you. hehe yeah like Naja said.

there is a thread in the water section also.

here is the thread that got me interested. This is another forum I get on.

Sounds interesting. I would like to know what MartinM210 thinks of this stuff. If it has a better coefficient than water that would be a first...

not sure what the exact temp is but I would guess it is not any better then water.

Pure water (PURE that is) is a very good insulator. It only conducts when there are dissolved ions in it. There's also that wonderful way to blow your year's income on a pint of goo called Fluorinert. A chemically inert, totally non conductive liquid used for cooling Crays and the like.
While keeping water that pure is utterly impractical, both are non-conductive liquids.

shouldn't the stuff pure and strait actully be more efficient(provided it is a better carrier of heat)

if it is water it is conductive no matter what anyone says.
until I see someone take a bowl full of it and through it into a 480v power box that is fully powered i will argue the point

that is what I thought. i was not happy at all then when I took the FSB up some and temp didn't move i was like cool. I think what happens is that it does no good till the nano partials heat up it is no better then water.

may be so great stuff for big OC.

The trouble with water is that stuff DOES dissolve in it. So even though you might start with a perfectly non conductive liquid, soon enough it will become very conductive due to the dissolved materials.
Coolant needs to be more than just a carrier of heat. Real world issues like corrosion need to be considered and mitigated.

is the freezing point of it 32*F or 0*C like water, or is it lower?

One project at a time, eh?

At the scale of things around here testing needs to be comprehensive. Even if it's great for the first 30 days, if it then eats the gear ... not so good after all. You understand that, obviously. (sarcasm level 0%, in case anyone was wondering)

not really it is more like antifreeze. not heavy but yeah kind of has a heavy era about it.
I diluted it some with the water because I thought it would be heavy. I now wish I wouldn't have.

Just run mercury in your loop Gotta admit it would probably work real good until it amalgamated with all the metals other than steel/iron...
