A modeling program is used for generating the polygons and such, as well as assigning textures to various points. That data is then fed into a rendering program that does a whole lot of fancy math and calculation to turn that raw data into the gorgeous images Evil is posting. The details of how exactly ray tracing works are a bit complicated to go into here. For a light-hearted take on the technology, there are open source programs out there that will let you build using virtual lego blocks, and then you can feed those files into one of several rendering applications. There are a number of fairly good open source ones available, and a finished rendering of various lego models can look good enough it's hard to tell they're not pictures.
Edit: As an aside, a lot of modeling programs include a renderer, but generally you get a superior quality render out of a specialized rendering program. It's also important to point out that a good quality render can take quite a while, as Evil pointed out, the ones he's posting are 7+ hour renders.
Edit 2: See here for lego modeling software. For rendering search for a program called povray or POV-Ray.
Edit 3: POV-Ray here.

Very nice rendering. Im learning NX currently and there is something like detailed (visible) thread. I dont know if there's a similar option in Inventor, but making "real" threads would add a lot to realism of your renders.
Edit: Have you tried to make the same rendering without dof? Its a nice addition but just for the sake of testing... because 7h is quite a lot of time for such scene, but then dof effect takes huuuuge amounts of time if you want to have good quality.

orclev explained it pretty well, but rendering is just a term generally meaning
the creating of an image, whether it be with markers, photoshop, or in 3D.
in my case i do alot of 3D rendering so the tools apply differently, thats a whole
nother story.
if you want to learn about rendering, you should look into 3D as a whole,
www.3dtotal.com is a great site, the community over there is pretty nice
i use to go there. also www.cgsociety.com or cgtalk.com
there isnt a real thread option, but i can make them just need to know the pitch and such

I remember back in the day when I was working with 3ds Max that Mental Ray was 'the sheet' in terms of rendering.. is that still any good?

more then welcome
thanks
mental ray is awesome, i use it often depending on the job
as soon as i get a bunch of renders out i can get them outputed into calanders
might have something soonjust a test but yea

Hmm, looks photoshoped to me.
It's funny how often Evils threads get a post something along the lines of:
Random Guy: "Wow, that's awsome, will you sell me one of those?"
Evil-98: "Well, maybe, as soon as I actually work out how to make them, these are just renders."
Random Guy: "These aren't photos?"

You dont need dof for test renders, and by fine tuning the parameters, you can go down to 1h per test render or there's something wrong with maxwell.
Nice threads![]()
no, im still playing with materials, in that render the mid is stainless steel brushed.
ill play with night shots and LEDs, it usually takes 12+ to get a clear render so i need to optimize something
i see youve never used maxwell before. lol
maxwell is a light simulator, every thing about the render system is based on a unbias physical system. the render is treated like a picture from a camera, you cant say no dof, but i can adjust the aperture.
speed is not the issue, its the sample level, as you can see this render is quite noisy. its a 12+ min render

Yes, I've "only" worked with various versions of brazil, vray and mentalray (sticked to the last one) so I'm comparing your results with them (at the end of the day, its the final effect that counts, no matter how the renderer works). From I've read, maxwell is interesting, might try it some dayIm just too busy with modelling all the time
If the last render took 12 minutes then its ok, you said 8 hours witch confused me.
