I've pencil modded my old DFI lanparty, asus p5k vanilla, and gigabyte ds3l. Nothing's blown up, lol.
With my p5k vanilla I've been very pleased with the mod - a rock solid 1.32 nonfluctuating vcore idle thru load ( alittle less than set in bios).
With my ds3l the mod's been less that perfect but did help a little.
If you don't like it just unplug and clean it off with alcohol.

Just a #2 pencil - 4-5 hard swipes over the resistor - I'm too lazy for a meter.
Check the bios vcore with the cpu-z vcore idle and load.
Add a little more swipes if you need it - retest.
When you are happy seal with a small drop of finger nail polish "dropped" on not "brushed" on to seal the graphite.

What's the maximum safe Vcore you guys would recommend for safe 24/7 usage? My target is 4GHz, I can do 3.9 @ 1.45 in BIOS (1.42 real). I think it needs over 1.5v to go 4Ghz stable. What do you guys think?

I tryed but nothing...i think i don't use the right pencil, when i mean pencil i mean that...i did 4-5 swipes over the resistor ...nothing...

i tryed again with something harder...but nothing...wtf?...you must destroy the surface of the transistor or what?...

No, regular #2 pencil.
Shade the surface - that's all.
Turn off eist, speedstep technology, and thermal throttling in bios.
Enable voltage dampener in bios.

That's it. If it doesn't help, sorry. Works for other people though.

Ok, i will try again...but what you mean a regula #2 ? what mean's #2 ?...atach a picture with the pencil please.

My E8400 and EP35-DS3L lets me do 9.5 multiplier for tuning (adds 0.5 mult), is that better than using default 9 for E8400, since you don't have to raise FSB as much?

#2 is a standard issue pencil that says #2 on the side.
EIST = Enhanced Intel Speedstep Technology
CPU thermal throttling should be there I think.

OMG i love u man ...now look at this !

Vcore 1.37 BIOS
Vcore 1.352 IDLE
Vcore 1.344 UNDER LOAD

That's incredible !!!...for 1.24 UNDER LOAD to 1.344 !!!!! WOW !!!...can i shade it more ?

I clean it with alchool before and the i pencil it 4-5-6 times...now i play a little more and then i must know how i seal it ...?

But now i have a problem...i can run 4GHZ with 1.35 bios but my temp are sky high !...because now it's reading the real Vcore...that's bad :haha:

Edit: I low the Vcore again at 1.32 BIOS, again the system is stable, i cannot belive what the pencil mode can do !...that's incredible...now i have @ 68 degres under load running Small FFTs...i try to lower the Vcore more...cya.

This is about four hours orthos stable. The actual BIOS vCore is 1.565v. I'm trying to get it rock solid without upping the vCore anymore, but at this point I might as well give it 1.6v and call it a day . . . or a chip. I'm still holding by my belief that these chips can handle more voltage than we all suspect. I think the initial degradation period/burn-in period has caused some to conclude that higher voltages will degrade chips. While I'm not saying that electromigration won't occur at higher voltages, I just don't think that it is as drastic as everyone fears.

testing my q817 e8500 tonight at 4.28 with only 1.35v 46min orthos stable and counting so far so good. but my temps are just breaking 70-72c so ill prob back it down to 4.2 for 24/7 use unless i get some better cooling but imo this is a great chip and scales awesome im 100% stable orthos and prime at 4.2 with 1.32v i was worried for nothing this is a great chip imo but ill bet with better air cooling i could do 4.3 24/7 (my final step i think with air only) and with water or something prob higher 24/7

i dont think jealous is the correct term. maybe CURIOUS, as to why it so high to just reach 4.0ghz..you have a awsome board and should need that much voltage. my POS mobo dont have half the goodies your's have and it only takes 1.36v for me to get 4.0ghz but i cant get any higher

even 1.36 is really high imo it takes me 1.268 to do 4.0

Today i stop here...THE PENCIL MODE HAS WORK PERFECTLY.

Without Pencil mode i run 4GHZ with the following settings:

1.37 BIOS
1.31 IDLE
1.24 UNDER LOAD

That was before i pencil mode the board...look at the Vdrop / Vdroops that i have...

With Pencil mode:

1.27 BIOS from 1.37
1.25 IDLE from 1.31
1.24 UNDER LOAD same without pencil
