AMD didn't have much to with their decision though, might have some effect in the implementation but they would have done it even without AMD. Not to say that AMD has thus far only been a burden to ATI, which is what quite a couple of guys have been saying, AMD has done more good than wrong for ATI thus far.
It just occurred to me that only now is AMD finally getting some return on their huge investment in ATI. A return that some of us doubted would ever arrive. It looks like maybe the acquisition may not have been so stupid after all. I think AMD is about to take back huge amounts of GPU market share. Hopefully this will mark the beginning of a recovery for AMD. It would be kind of funny if their GPUs pay for their CPU R&D costs until they have a chance to catch up to Intel.
