I wouldn't call it beat, since it's less than 5% difference. But still, a $300 card matching a $400 card's performance, now that's great value.

Agreed, they scaled PAST 100% in COD4 and the Witcher (assuming the only reason it was able to pass 100% is the 512mb of vram bottleneck).

just phoned ocuk and this girl answered, i asked her if they could knock some money off my purchase as they are selling their 4870's bundle at around £100 dearer than Ebuyer...
she said 'noooo sorry' so i said that you would lose future custom and she said 'well ebuyer IS our company so we wont lose customers'...

so they price gouge at ocuk and make their offer at Ebuyer look outstanding.... the ebuyer offer doesnt have them in stock...... s....

    End of Rant

I'd be temped to get a pair of 4870's over a pair of 4850's, but to be honest, i'd need a new PSU

As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

That can't be right. Crossfire 4870's score over twice as high as a single 4870???? That would mean the scaling is better than perfect.

Nope. The drivers are in beta faze and not fully optimized for HD4xx in ssingle card mode.Expect even better performance once AMD starts to fully optimize for the new uarchitecture.
So single card performance is not up the max possible. In multi-gpu scenario,2 cards are performing great due to present good optimizations in Catalysts for CF.

That doesn't even make sense. Dual performance is based on the performance of a single card. In what reviews have you ever seen two cards perform over twice as well as the single card? I've looked at hundreds of reviews and I've never seen scaling that was better than perfect.

It might be because that particular game is very multi GPU friendly, and that the new ATI cards handle TLP/ILP.

I don't know if that would lead to better than perfect performance, but who knows maybe it's just THAT efficient in this particular instance?

It is possable, ATI is focusing 100% on Crossfire performance as its critical to there success and staying with or ontop of there compatition. Also would do well for marketing purposes to to have greater gains in crossfire. More people will buy multiple cards.
