    They do, for future reference.

    EDIT:
Take a look at the change log! These drivers look killer for HD3000 and HD2000 card owners!! Still no HD4000 support, though.

I've spent a few hours today running HD3870 and HD3850 benchmarks with CAT 8.5 to compare with the HD4850 - going have to redo them with CAT 8.6 as well now

Just like Cooper said, there is support it's just not official. This will mean that there could be some substantial improvements for the HD4000 series with newer drivers (8,7 and onwards). w0mbat already mentioned that these drivers do not support all the features of they HD4000 series, PowerPlay is not supported for example and UVD2 might not be supported as well. So expect power consumption to lower with future drivers, this also explains the high temperature that Jimmyz and others reported.
So here is hoping to what 8,7 can do for the HD4000 series.....
EDIT: Here is where w0mbat claimed these things and I trust him on this one.

CAT 8.6 contains the 8.501 display driver wheras the display driver ATI made avaliable for HD4850 reviews is 8.501.1.0 - probably no real differences.

Well I got about a 400 point increase in Vantage with these over the 8.6 beta's

    Cat 8.6 beta = P14565
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=147959

    Cat 8.6 official = P14933
    http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dmv=177338

And there is in fact a huge performance gain with COD4 that I noticed right away. Well over a 30fps difference in areas.

    Still testing......

I installed, but now i can't get CCC to open on Vista x64. It appears to be loading, but nothing ever comes up. It also says that it is running in processes.

    anyone else have this problem?

EDIT: nevermind, i reinstalled just CCC, and its working now. Go figure.

Are there any links to the 8.501.1.0 driver that was for the 4850 reviews? I'd like to try it out.

What did you think they would be using? Ubuntu Hardy Heron?

Funny, coincidentally I've installed Ubuntu Hardy today, because i needed it for something a friend asked me, and while checking for the ATI Linux driver i found the new Catalyst 8.6.
I was planning on post it here but the forum was down with only an "upgrading" message .
So yeah, I have it installed here in Ubuntu .
Gonna try the Unreal Tournament 2004 demo, maybe there are some improvements in performance .
OR, i can try the ET: QW demo...

The Control Panel feels so empty here.
