Well looks like AMD continues 38xx policy here.
Not satisfied with one card performance?
Buy secound or third...
For me thats ok.

No, a 4850 on a P45 board. If the leaked benches are true then the 4870 will out strip a 9800GTX by 30-40% and if the above ATi marketting gumpf is right it will also wallop the next gen nVidia cards. From what I've seen with our 4850 the ~30-40% over the GT is about right and ATi have finally nailed the 4xAA bug with the 4800 series.
I've only had one recent nVidia card, G92 GTS and it done me proud, we used my OC settings for an SLi system that's had some good reviews. Given that the 4870 will retail for ~£150 and the cheapest GTS I can find is £156 then it might be a worthwhile upgrade provided that the leaks are true.

Historically, ATI Fan Profiles are set in a conservative way in that the fan will only spin up when it gets really hot. Most of the time it crosses this threshold in 3D only......even if that means idling at 60-70. The chips can withstand this heat no problem. I don't see what the big fuss is over temperatures anyways, most of us are just going to replace the cooler on Day 1 anyways, and you can always use a different fan profile via Rivatuner or Bios Editing once the tools get updated

I have my trusty old Accelero S1, just waiting to have a nice warm 4850 to cool. Acctually think I´m going to lap it to night, so its of to a good start.
Or is it worth the effort?

ATi HD 4850 has been sold since the beginning of this week in Indonesia, for 220 US$ price. Some people who has been using it say that it's matching or slightly faster compared to 9800 GTX @1280*1024, and the gap is getting wider as the display resolution and IQ setting scale up. From that price, i believe the launch price in USA shouldn't be any higher than 200 US$, since VGA card price in my country is always around 10-20% more expensive compared to north america MSRP.
I don't know about anyone else, but it doesn't excite me much that a new generation card is beating a last generation, even accounting for the price points.
If Nvidia scales up performance by same amount for their next gen stuff, AMD will still be behind.
Noo, same here. I dont get excited at all.Wish they would stop with this silly "develpoment" crap. Faster, cheaper, better, competing, with each other, Bah. However I love a good game of miss Pacman, like in the good old times.
Ok, I was being iroic, please dont hate me, but I do get exited about it![]()

Update on the teperature info, stock was 79c idle. I took off the cooler and cleaned it for photo's. when i re-installed it I used A.S. Ceramique and now idle is 54c the stock goop was way too thick I guess.

That's correct, but in games that nVidia G92 has a huge lead over ATi RV670 -Lost Planet for example- HD 4850 could only narrow the gap. OTOH, the impression from my colleagues in local IT forum that has been using the card for the past 2-3 days, the card feels much more consistent through out the game and pretty strong with cranked up IQ setting compared to RV670 cards -aka, it's no longer a benching card, a stigma that's been carried by R(V)6xx cards for quite sometime.
Ofcourse, take it with a healthy dose of salt, since this is not a first hand info right away, but the fact that the card is in distribution already in my country is very provable.![]()
