I was listening You had to know if they're shipping retail packages to reviewers that they aren't unfinished samples. They had to have a whole storeroom full of them.

I don't want to compare it to an s1283. I want to put a big panaflo on it and see how it compares to my trues on overclocked quads

I actually thinking about that too, I suspect that it is same as TRUE and need a stronger fan to make it shine.

yeah, judging it with nickel and led fan, this should be the version just like the RS1283, I wonder if they gonna come out the regular version not the luxury version.

As for the TRUE: I have been retesting that cooler every day with different fans. My conclusions: it cools far better with high-output fans because of the dense fin array, and doesn't cool so well in high ambient (room) temperatures (24-28C). That's in stock form...

... but if you lap the surface, and add a medium-output fan series to the front and back for a push/pull configuration, the TRUE is top-notch!

In the next week I have a very detailed TRUE vs Vendetta 2 vs HDT-S1283 article coming out... which might include the Achilles S1284 v2 if it comes to me in time.

question, so for example... if 2 1500rpm fan front and back and 1 3000rpm (ultra kaze)....which setup will cool better? assuming room temp is 24-28? (CALI pretty much falls into that range)

Fin density on the Xig is pretty sparse so it doesn't make a huge difference on CFM of the fan. It's pretty efficient with lower rpm/cfm (thus lower noise) fan.

I have the Scyth Ultra Kaze 3000 mounted on my Kingwin RVT-12025. I tested the stock fan (Full 1500rpm) vs the Ultra Kaze 3000 (full RPM). With the SAME ambient room temp, and same OC with voltage, the Scyth gave me a -1C avg difference using Prime95 SMALL FFT for 15min. The noise though was atrocious on the Ultra Kaze. I couldn't justify using full RPM and the resulting noise for 1C difference *shrugs*

Olin, you seem to have completely contradicted yourself:

According to Xigmatek, there probably aren't any differences since NewEgg decided to go ahead and begin shipping this first version of the product. Benchmark Reviews tested this version of the product, and will receive the second retail version of the Achilles when it is made available in a few more weeks. All in all, it's not a bad product; especially for AMD processors..

What I meant was that Xigmatek had sent me the final version... or at least as far as they knew at that point in time. It wasn't until I revealed their design flaw that they went and ordered a redesign. Know I realize that philosopically, nothing is ever final, but I believe they meant the version they sent Benchmark Reviews to be 'it'.

Now we know it was, but my Xigmatek sources tell me the design is being 'adjusted' and that the new revisions will be available in product around the first part of June.

The photo I saw with the sharpie outline of the ihs on it didn't look bad. If I'm getting good contact over the cores I think it's enough. If they can make it better then I'm all for it but I'm going to run a current one on one of of my 3600mhz quad crunchers. With a different fan than stock of course, either panaflo or one of those big mama 120x38 sythes.

I think that this is a good cooler as it stands now, without changes. It's not the best, but rather it performs among the best (after you upgrade the fan). The contact area is reduced, but not so much that it would have a very negative impact.

My advice is this:

If you want an outstanding product right out of the box, the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 with stock fan will do very well. The Kingwin RVT-12025 is a clone, but uses a low-output fan which is not going to perform well for overclockers.

An out of the box Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme needs a very high-output fan (or two medium output fans) to overcome the dense fin array before you'll get performance matching the HDT-S1283/RVT-12025.

If you will actually commit yourself to lapping surfaces, then the Thermalright Ultra-120 eXtreme with high-output fans is a great product that can't be matched.

How are Zalman ZM-F3 120mm for push pull? (For a new open air setup with either the Xigmatek or a True)

I have a few extra Zalmans and a pile of San Ace 38mm big boys that are similar to the Panaflows or Deltas. What's better, push pull with the zalmans or one big San Ace fan?

I currently just use one of the San Ace on a normal TR Ultra 120 and it cools like a champ. I'm ordering a Xigmatek and True because doing this comparison looks kinda fun.

Finally, does the Achilles version come with the crossbow mounting kit?

I have not tested with any Zalman fans; but two fans of 40~CFM each in push pull do not equal one 80~CFM fan. It would take two 60~CFM fans to come close.

The Achilles does not come with the Crossbow mounting system; however, we used this Crossbow system for all of our tests referenced here:

And it makes since that retailers are selling the early version. What were they (xigmatek) supposed to do? Bite the bullet on a couple thousand coolers, and not make any profit?
If they did that consumers would have to pay more for the "final version".

To be clear, they have only said that there will be a replacement version introduced in June. I am not making any promises, because some of the information they have released to me has been contradictory. If they do as they say, the new version will address the contact area of the pipes so that the entire processor is covered.

It's pretty awesome that these are selling for approx $40. I talked a noob buddy through a purchase and install of the 1283 over the phone, and it gave him great load and idle temps with just the push pins. He's running 8400 @ 4ghz 1.35vcore with blend load temps around 56c.
