Yea well this is probably what they meant by the article of simplying the naming a little while ago like I expected, that starting with GT200 NVIDIA cards would get easier naming system.

I don't know why what you got against this, I think it's good, no more confusion even for non comp geeks. 2xx number where probably picked from GT200 I guess, they could have picked any number but in the end it wouldn't matter really if it was 200 or 300 or 400 or whatever, I don't tink having a higher number than the competitor will help that much anyways. So if this is true I think it's a wise decision from NVIDIA instead of naming it for example 9900GTX. Actually this naming system brings back memory of the nice GeForce 3 (Ti 200, Ti 500), and 4 days.

When Mercedes brought their C111 to Talledega years ago and blew away the closed course record did it count? Yes..
That was a "factory" car and a "one of" that no one could buy and was never sold.
Records are records and that is a fact so get over it.

Could be, besides ati did it as well back then when they released the 800 series after the 9800.

At some point I will stop caring though what nvidia names their product and start complaining about them not being avalaible yet... I have two 8800 Cards that are waiting to be replaced by something new.

I think this card has it in it to be a worthy sucessor to the 8800 GTX/Ultra.

For me that would have to be at least 15fps more in Crysis at very high settings.

Just don't take every rumor for granted. Personally I use a great pinch of logic when deciding what to believe, after 9xxx series is already used and this chip will be a whole new gen (from NVIDIA point of view), 9900 would be too close to the old cards (after all this GT200 chip is expected to be like 7800 compared to 6800 or 8800 compared to 7900 situation) and 10800GTX would perhaps seem a bit farfetched, naming change at this point makes perfect sense especially after all this fuss about complicated naming. It's a win-win situation, NVIDIA made a logical decision what the market was requesting and consumers also welcome it.

Guess there will be probably 3xx series left for the "optimized" GT200 chip then which I think I'll wait for as these cards are out of my budget and I prefer to buy "2nd wave" stuff at a more attractive price too unless there will be a very similiar card to the 260 version but lower clocks or something.

Since I bought my EVGA 9800GX2 on March 18th and the GeForce GTX 280 is expected to launch between the 16th and 20th of June, my Step-Up should be fine right?

(that is, assuming that GTX 280 offers more performance over 9800GX2 - which we have yet to find out)

It should last until 18:th June.
I hope the date is correct to and the stepup is a easy choise even if the gain is just 15% or less as the upgradeprice will be a small fee for shipping right as the rumored price is the same?

Yeah I would believe the price will be even less than the original price of the 9800GX2 ($599). But how are you going to Step-Up yours if you have an EK waterblock on it? Does EVGA's Step-Up policy prohibit against that or no?

    gtx 280?
so i imagine this is only a minor upgrade from a geforce 3 ti 200?

but seriously, if that pricing is true, they are pretty confident that it will be significantly faster than a 4870x2

Not really, if anything, it could show that its performance for single card is at or a bit above the level of the 9800gx2 looking back at how their pricing has worked lately, so if anything, they would have priced it probably at least $650 unless if this pricing is meant to be both very well priced and very high performance. In which case, that means this card will be sold underpriced which nvidia will not do unless they have to

^ Well you have to remember at least in the past NVIDIA never had the new series appropriately priced against last gen and besides 9800GX2 is an oddball, 7950GX2 wasn't cheap either. At least during launch the last gen prices were ridicolously high and close to the new gen until some months later they started dropping a bit but still were not appropriately priced. I hope that would be the case this time around (don't like high prices but I want the long awaited perf boost :p) but with recent NVIDIA strategy I dunno what to believe.

NVIDIA could afford that this time around though and with a huge stock and nicely working cards they'd do well enough despite selling the new cards a bit cheaper in comparision to the G92 cards performance/price wise. It's been a long time since there's been a huge speedbump so I think there should be plenty of buyers out there if performance is there too.

On a positive note. If the GT200 only performs slightly faster than the 4870, it's likely Nvidia would have to drop the prices on it when the 4870 is released. Obviously this would only happen if the 4870 started to saturate our segment of the market, but there is no reason for it not to if it performs really close to the GT200. Here's to hoping!

For my part I know nothing with any certainty, but the sight of the stars makes me dream.

The only reason to buy the new card is benching, and playing Crysis if you haven't so already.

8800GTX will last you long enough to wait till the prices drop massively.
