drb, if you looked at a perfectly two flat polished surfaces with a microscope, you would see it looks like a mountain range. actually they would mate with alot of airspace. im sure you could figure the percentage of non contact if you measured the peaks and valleys. this is were the thermal paste comes in, to fill the valleys. less paste is good, as long as you get 100% contact. do a google search on surface finish, and you can learn more about this subject. respectly, randy.
drb here is a link to what im talking http://www.engineersedge.com/surface_finish.htm

waterlogged, thank you for the forgivness. lols. one thing i do not do is presume anyone is stupid......actually i presume people in the forums, like you are very smart fellas....so as i started to read the first link you kindly directed me to, i had a hard time after reading one of his first lines......
quote " One thing worth mentioning here is that once a base is bowed, it must remain this way for good - you can NOT revert it back to 'flat' as it will (the base) look sort of like a fun house mirror " .
but after i read something like this, i really have to dismiss any other thing he has to share, as i know this is not true........
one thing i know is very true is the quality of production machinined parts....at best ther dimentional parameters are very poor, well to my standards. they simply dont have the time or the want to spend the extra money to machine ther product to very tight tolerances.......all the manufacturing companys just want to make money, and if its with a marginal product they really dont care to much. kinda like getting a dollar from everyone ,. lols. well waterlogged, im sorry to go on about economics.......but the blocks have to be flat in my mind. the cpu's cost to much to bend into submission, to try to get extra pressure, for a few deg's of cooling. also my cpu had a crown on it, i have to believe its because the stock intel sink attaches with so much down force, it probally bends the mobo outta shape a lil. to me with very flat surfaces, you dont have to use alot of what i think is lots of pressure. on my northbridge cooler, the sink is right on the chips. i dare to say if i had used the ek block as it was manufactured i probally would have cracked the chips. the block had a valley in it. i could tell by the finnish, it was just a milled surface......like i said before, ther not gonna spend the extra time money to do this like i would. i suppose we just live in a fast paced, greedy world....hell i donno, im just a monkey, lols. also waterlogged people like you brought me to the forums, as i value your knowledge and experence. like you said im a new guy. peace, randy.

LOL, I lapped my GTX.... On a calibrated Granite surface table, and it is something I do in my job....
To be honest, if I bought another one, I wouldn't waste my time....
Your right... The center was rediculessly flat, ie not measurable, and the parts not touching the table were only the corners where the cap screws are. Which you wouldn't want touching anyway.
I also lapped CPU, and I'm glad I did this, the IHS was rather concaved, but thats to be expected, its just solder, and the metal will contract while its solidifying. I just lapped untill it was all copper, only lap with light pressure so it maintains its natural shape, and didnt bother polishing until the cows come home... only went to p1500.
Guarentee theres no gain beyond about p600.
Haha,
first things first, right lads?
Hmm, I've gotta post my "soon-to-be-complete" watercooled rig to this thread. The build is just coming so slow, I am moving to other city, and finally I got apartment with balcony (=I can place my huge radiator outside, and go below zero temps during winter)
Not into xtreme builds anymore, just like to keep things silent.

You might want to be careful about that xD

hahaha that's funny, too cool isn't quite good when you don't prevent for such things.
A friend of mine killed a asus striker extreme, 8800gtx and a e6750 last year. his setup was near his window in the winter when his chiller said 5c. condensation began to form on his vga, and mobo.
he is still busy with his RMA![]()

Totally your prerogative to make that mistake. nik is one of the more trust worthy members that does testing here. Many here wait for his word on what blocks to buy or avoid, if you wish to ignore his testing, then that's your problem.
Table.....plate....what's the difference?
Ironically, I have a 12"x9"x3" Granite surface plate here and it's the only thing I recommend for lapping. Even a Grade B surface plate is flatter than any piece of glass and if your lucky, you can find them on the cheap.
If your the type that goes looking for every last MHz and every last °C, lapping the CPU is a must, even under these conditions, the block still shouldn't be touched, despite what some might say.

And 2 more pictures.
Rob B,
that looks absolutely freakn NICE!
I'm a big fan of the Copper top! is that masterkleer tubing, feser, or something else?

Rob_B, is that (so sweet) case powder coated?
So that's Feser's 1/2"ID 3/4" OD tubing? Maybe it's just me, but I find 3/4 tubing looks a bit thick sometimes. But I like the looks of yours a lot. Glad I saw the pics!

My camera is RMA. But the project is almost done right now. When my rig is up and running I'll keep on making little modification an detailing work to just make it perfect.
CPU only, full motherboard, 3870X2 in crossfire @ the moment, and later on 10 HDD's.
When I have my camera back I'll rebuild the whole rig again with photo's of the whole build. So check out my topic ithin a few weeks!!!
