Gigabyte GA-P45-DQ6

With the super DQ6 from gigabyte coming out, it seems as if they've screwed that whole extra attachment onto the top of that northbridge heatsink.

Which would render it effectively useless.

Also notice the old (and crappy) plastic push pins are back on the NB??...X38 featured metal spring screws to secure the NB heatsink better onto the PCB.

It does the job. I prefer this method, would mean I could use my mcw30 without any problems or unused mounting holes.

You can't have 16x electrical in the second slot. It's only 8x. Marketing playing with eletrical and physical?

I think the IDT chip is for the two 4x PCI-E slots....this mobo is not 16x-16x electrical so you can't run Crossfire at 16x on both cards, 8x-8x...yes. The PCB features four bios flash parts, two for the man/backup Gigabyte bios while the other two are serial flash chips for the SiliconImage controllers, thus it should be possible with the SteelVine software to flash the embedded bios/firmware when the user wants to.

Thus far i am loving this board, it's my next purchase for sure...tons of features, tons of SATA and all the rest, layout seems solid.

I made out alot of the code, 89HPES16T...then i spotted BXG, so this might be the chip. It's generation 2.0 PCI-E spec. thus it is 16x, it must control the two 4x slots and the 8x slot...making 16x, the top PCI-E slot is 16x...how many lanes does P45 have?

It must be controlling the two 4x slots (8x lanes), then the PCI-E LAN chips...i see three on the PCB but the I/O shows four LAN ports, it must also be controlling the SATA ports as well and maybe the Silicon Image chips...that would eat 16x lanes easy.

Asus, MSI and Gigabyte are all using it to allow 2x 8x PCI-E slots in crossfire, the Intel specification for the P45 actually says one 8x slot, and one 4x slot for crossfire.

So for any P45 board with 2x 8x PCI-E slots, it needs that extra chip for the extra 4 lanes.

Where do you find this to be confirmed? I read somewhere (I forget) that it is really only 6 phase CPU. I heard only ASUS actuallt uses full true 8 phase, not counting the 2 phase NB and 2 phase vdimm (so essentially the same 12 phase except for recent P5E3 premium on X48 wich is now offers 3 phase vdimm), yet they dont market it as 12 phase (or now 13).

Sort of if thats all you needed it for, or better yet a dual 2gb up/down streaming LAN for mega file transfering or gaming. You will indeed need at least one 4 port pouter just to use it or a big hub/switch to share with the rest of you workstations.

Same here. I'm sure it's purely a Gigabyte marketing ploy to show a higher number to look more impressive over the rest or to out show ASUS's own true 8 phase. As far as I can see, it really only passes Abit's 5 phase so far, In CPU area. I'd like to how digital really compares to solid anolog like in DFI stuff, as they still use it on some high end models, the anolog PRM.

Yes, but does the chip ADD addition lanes, or does it just convert lanes to a different format?, i.e. 8x-8x...it must also be controlling the two PCI-E 4x slots also.

I think it's controlled as 6 phase but there is double the components for each phase so it can deliver the power of 12 phase but is still only controlled by a 6-phase device... that's where the confusion is arising.

Oh, and remember how Asus slammed GB for the DQ6 and 12 phase and how it wasn't nesscary?...oh how times have changed.

same phases that was around forever already on the P35-DQ6 and later X38-DQ6, EXP38-DS4/DS5/DQ6, i only have P35-DS3P with the 6 phases and from what is on the forums at least the vDroop is smaller than on the Asuses P5E that has the 8 phase
