Asus Maximus Formula - BIOS help please ....

Hi guys , before I read through 189 pages here I would like to present you with my problem and maybe someone can help .

Now that I have my new rig running I have started benching in ernest . I can hit 3200 MHz easily as you would expect but even 10 MHz over that and its very unstable so for now I am going to play with vid card clocks , but I really need to get on top of this . Shortly I will post all of the bios settings and see if anyone can shed some light on this for me . Another issue that has surfaced is that if I go into bios , save any settings then try to restart it wont start as per normal , the lights etc flash and it goes dark again. After this the first touch of the power button has a similar effect then next application results in a start up . This is eery and has me concerned. I am also concerned with nb/sb temps but I am yet to apply some proper airflow to that area so I will see how that goes after that mod.

    BIOS version 0907

There are alot of settings I have not come across before , so I have alot to learn. I can hit 3200 with everything on auto (nub I know) only bit of extra cpu voltage , but everything I tried would not help stability even at 8x410 . This board is much more complicated than my P5K was , Im sure if I can master it then it will fly.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Edit: I tried the 8x450 settings in OP and no boot , Im still reading here guys and am trying some different things but it still disturbs me how many times I have to try to start it after entering bios before it starts up .

Should I start a new thread for help or leave this here ?

Edit2: I got it up to 3600 but it needed 1.5v to be stable enough to bench , have not tested long term yet . I assume that some of the advanced bios settings can improve stability while reducing raw cpu voltage , would this be right ? Its an L737B with 1.2125v VID so I had hoped for more.

Before you do anything else, upgrade bios to MF1004. If you're not scared to use Asus update in windows, then go all the way up to MF1006. If you're feeling adventurous, you can try rampaging your board to RF0308. All these bioses will give you better stability and Ocs. PM sent. Goodluck.

Thanks for the empathy. This is a bit of a nightmare, but I will feel much better if it's only the board that fried. I'll try removing the battery tonight since I have nothing to loose at this point (there's no jumper, right?). I'm going to RMA this board no matter what (the other is already on it's way; should be here Thursday). I really hope the mobo is the only thing fried.

Um... does NewEgg track the serial number of stuff they ship?

I'm VERY interested in what you get out of the L737B chip as I have the same one you do. I can't get that thing stable at 3.6 without using 1.46volts(loadline calibration disabled) ot 1.38v(loadline enabled.) It also hits upwards of 72'c under prime load at 3.6 . Please keep us posted!

its all about the gtl with that low vid, i dont understand why you need 1.5v for 3.6... unless you got a dud cpu but i doubt that. on the rampage bios you can set it up to .67 (wish it were more )

    Wrong Core speed

    Hi,

I am a little puzzled. I thought I saw this somewhere on this thread, but I looked thru 100 pages and didn't see it. I will keep going thru the rest of the pages...but hopefully someone can help me out before I go thru. I wanted to check to see if anyone has seen this problem before I continue with my OC. My after converting to Rampage to 308 without a problem. I ran CPUZ and saw my Core Speed to be 1.6GHz, well around there. I wish I took a screenshot of it late last night. Anyone see this kind of problem before? Any suggestions is greatly appreciated. Sorry for my bad English.

    Thanks in advanced everyone.

Thanks for the quick reply there ZenEffect. After I flashed the bios, I left it as default. I will check it tonight when I get home from work. Thanks. Hopefully that is it.

its speed step dropping your multi to 6

    266(fsb)x6=1596 or 1.6ghz cpuz.

looking @ your sig, you could probably use a better cpu hsf as well.

To think of it now, I do remember seeing 266.

    Any recommendation for HSF?

    Thanks.

well the 6 multi is the more important factor in the equation. as far as a good hsf for a q6600, im not exactly sure as i skipped air and went straight to water, but i have heard of good results with a thermalright ultra extreme

    an article worth looking @

    Thanks again.

Yes, I see 6 multi is for 1.6GHz, so 9 is the magic number for 2.4GHz.

Nice link there. Looking into the hsf atm. Thank you very much for your help.

go with the thermalright ultra extreme 120. extremely good HS that one. am using it now and its lapped. as we speak my sys is under prime 95 load on small fft and temp maxing out at 80C while oc is 3.8GHz while at idle is about 45C. pretty good if u ask me.

yes i know the temps are kinda high but i am still quite a distance away from TJunction so i think its safe for the moment. planning to relap properly anyway both the cpu and hs.

anyway, back to hs, compared to the zalman 9500 i used to run, this HS is leaps and bounds better. try it out.

Hey, all. I'm trying to flash back to my MF BIOS so I can RMA my board, but I'm having some trouble. When I use the "AFUDOS /MF1004.rom /pbnc /n" command, I get an error that the ROMID does not equal the installed ROM. This seems to me that it's saying it can't install the MF BIOS because it thinks my board is a RF and can't flash over. Any ways to override this?

***EDIT: Tried 0907 too. Looks like I might be stuck with this board?

i dont think thats the problem and there is a missing command on the command line there. it should read as following

    AFUDOS /iMF1004.rom /pbnc /n

you absolutely need the "i" in the command line to flash. i had several times flashed forwards and backwards between MF & RF with no problems using AFUDOS2.29ES

Right, I was using the /i. Sorry, I wrote it incorrectly.

    I FOUND THE PROBLEM...

It is absolutely necessary to use the ENGINEERING SAMPLE to flash back. ***EDIT: Trying to do strikethrough on the following: [s]v2.36 on the first page did not work. I had to use the other one.[/s]

Somehow, I had v2.36 not from this thread, and it wasn't an ES. ATT, I can not independently verify whether or not the v2.36 Kup linked to will work, but I have no reason to believe otherwise.

Sorry for the drama, but hopefully this will help someone else down the road who wants to flash back to MF. Apparently, the /n command (override ROMID) does not work backwards on a non-ES version.

Sorry. I edited my post after you posted. Please reference the above. I'm having problems doing a strikethrough. I'm a retard today.

So has ASUS come out with a new BIOS to block the AFUDOS engineering versions yet? Just a matter of time?

I find my new quad does not play well with Rampage bios 308, nothing big but little things. This new quad is not overly pleased on the 8 multi ( wich is were I want it) but works very well on the 9 multi. And when I stress test my NB/SB show -65c
450x8 and I get a USB overvolt error booting into Vista and the PC restarts.
449x8 and the error is not present. Yet any FSB setting using my E8400 on the 8 multi and everything is ok. All part of the Maximus experience I guess.
I'm looking real hard at the new DFI x48 board, getting tried of being a Asus lab rat.

Heh, so get the DFI board, then come back in here and post your results. Maybe I will be a convert too. I doubt it though... I was Abit, now am ASUS... Still testing

I already have a Formula SE, so I decided to pick up the Newegg open box formula regular edition for $130 a week or so back and the $85 G.Skill 4GB PC8000... I hadn't tried the Rampage BIOS on the SE but did on the open box...

Very pleased with the combo(especially the 2x2GB kit)...just sharing my timings for others with this combo....10 hours Memtest, and 24hr prime stable.

Nope, just out of curiosity tried MF1006 -> RF0308, it will flash. I didn't flash though (cltraltdel before writing) - this new bios is interesting, good work asus!

Before flashing I used RF0308, tried flashing to MF1006 with afudos but it gave error about boot block size or something. It didn't stop me though, I flashed to MF1004 with afudos and then flashed MF1004->MF1006 with asus update (from file).

Thanks to Zucker2k for informing about the new bios, had no clue about it.

Big thank to KeeperJones on asus forums, http://vip.asus.com/forum/view.aspx?...Language=en-us
Oh and my rev is 1.02g. I used http://seanet.com/~keeper/MAXIMUS_FORMULA_1006.ROM guess http://seanet.com/~keeper/B1006.ROM is the same file but the first one works for sure.

Where do you guys even see a sepperate download section for SE v/s NON SE (rev 1.02 or1.03)? If you go to the SE downloads (rev 1.02G) it is al blank and has been like that since introduced. Onlt the rev 1.03 has anything available to download as they are supposed to be the same. Where are you getting BETA v1006 from, if not ASUS ftp? What is so unique ablut it that will not flash via Afudos to a SE rev 1.02G? Just curious?

Are all the BETA v1006 testers so busy to test S3/STR?
