of course I have yet once to see you suggest one to get. I even asked in this thread, for suggestions. sure my price point wasn't in line with true hardware, but shouldn't stop suggestions when asked.
some hardware raid cards are slower than some host based, so what should i get, in the same token, what should i get to replace my raptors?

Sorry Brother but I'm taking the 5th on this oneJust look at how many times I have actually posted in this thread = less then a dozen

Areca , L.S.I , or 3Ware is all I recommend and of course the best is Areca and LSI Areca being the one I recommend to Overclockers that need high compatibility Support do to jumping from Board to board. My Areca Card has worked Flawlessly in every Board I have had since I jave Bought it which has been about 10 Mobo's now![]()

I use an 16GB USB stick as result storage while overclocking and copy that stuff on a regular basis to my local fileserver. If I'm not at home i can access my local network via a pptp tunnel.
Can you access the drive with dd_rescue?
I installed debian/lenny yesterday on my 780G test system.
For installation i use the "expert" modus. I downsized the wxp partition to 250GB and created a 4GB swap partinion and a 246GB system partition.
During installation I only installed the basic system without desktop stuff.
Lenny uses grub2 now, did not know there is a second version available. Seems to be able to use higher resolution graphic modes.
After the installation finished i used aptitude to install "Desktop" and "Gnome-Desktop" stuff. Took ~6min's to get all the packaes from the net over my 16GBit connection.(Had used a 3GBit connection last time so i was impressed).
"Desktop" and "Gnome Desktop" meta packages do not include xdm or gdm, which is a good thing if the card does not work out of the box.
I installed the fglrx packages and module-assistant.
I started module-assistant, made and installed a fglrx-kernel package. Afterwards I simply replaced "vesa" with "fglrx" in the Display section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
I started X and fgl_gears (or so) worked and looked accelerated in terms of speed.
All that took aprx. 30minutes.![]()
Then I installed the compiz stuff with synaptic package manager.
My current Desktop system for some strange reason did not boot my lenny install (had it installed on the M3A and moved it to the M2A-VM).
I moved that systems hd to my 780G setup and tried to customize xorg.conf.
In short it did not work and I went tru dozends for forums and tried all types of modifications without luck.
I booted my other desktop's system which succesfully ran compiz on the M3A (not sure if i had used the hd2600xt or the hd2400pro that time).
compiz did not work here also. I also had beryl/emmerald installed on that system before. I was able to start berly but the emerald window decorators did not show up (guess some stuff got overwritten from compiz/compiz-fusion). However if I opened or closed windows i saw 3d-effects.
Will try to sole the problem more systematic later (after at least 8 hrs of office work) today, all above testings where AIGLX related, i have not tried XGL yet.
For benching, my good old Adaptec 3940AUW does me fine. Just need faster drives, and bigger ones. need more space pl0z...
If I madea monolith block to cover MOSFETs and northbridge, would any here be interested in it?
That must MB's if it's an ISO CD image
************************************
Not sure if someone mentioned it but the "newest' (1.4) BIOS regulates NB speed instead of HT,so setting "HT ratio" in bios, actually sets the NB speed, and HT stays at default, but can be changed in windows with AOD

Last but not least, all these RAID cards you talking about (Areca etc.) plug into
PCI slots right? Are there any PCIe cards that anyone has used? Cause PCI is
not the fastest part of any system, no matter how good the card is.(Brother)
In BIOS, no.
Higher RAM+NB MHz.2. What is the consensus between you and Tony on the Phenom liking high MHz or tighter timings?
I've not seen anyone have 2GB NB and beat 13GB/s in Sandra yet at 2.7G CPU. If someone can beat that which I showed a long while back, in 32bit XP, then we might know if lower latency helps.
4-4-4-4 1T 520 did not beat 626 5-5-5-15 though.
I would say 4x1GB and 4x2GB is the way to go.3. Is it better to do 4gb (4 - 1gb sticks or 2 - 2gb sticks) or if going for 8gb (4 - 2gb sticks or 2 - 4gb sticks)
You're very welcome mate but I think you're more awesome
So you decided on the Corsair?
710, June, maybe, not sure...
Thanks for buying me one pal
I knew I could count on you.
Whens it being shipped?
Compare the price/perf for me when you get time please
I usually play Firefox and Thunderbird quite a lot and oh yeah, MSN too.
So a test of how much benefit a PCIe RAID 5xRaptors gives compared to 1xRaptor on SB600 using the above programs would be very nice and appreciated
No idea, lost it, when system boots with the drive attached it gets stuck at POST and boots very slow. Doesn't recognize drive anymore i.e. ROM.
I'll get it scanned first with WD tools but had no time yet and it doesn't pick up in Windows.
All my K10 info is on there, all of the latest. I hadn't backed up 9850BE info yet.![]()

I've had Compiz running once in Ubuntu 64b, but some update messed it up.
I'll try again, have 2 free drives now.
Nice idea, any pics?
They would help people interested
Thanks man, but... are you positive?![]()
Tried multiple combos?
I'll have to try that one, our prayers have been answered indirectly
Yea PCIe 8x RAID cards, we use many for professional builds, but like I mentioned, I'm just not as geek to buy one for a home build and Camp usually steals all of them from etailers anywayAre there any PCIe cards that anyone has used? Cause PCI is

A friend if mine once replaced the electronic parts with another identical disc. That may work for you also or do you hear strange noises from the hd?
Not really detailed I skipped what I thought is obvious to you.
I suspect it's the kernel not working correct with the fglrx module. I remeber i had similar issues once with 2.6.23 kernel on the M3A. lenny comes with the 2.6.24 kernel whom has no problems with latest phenoms if i use an older one all this noapic nolapci irqpoll stuff is required again.![]()
Compiz fun will start once dri2 is finished. Before that using opengl apps together with compiz will not work or cause problems for most apps.
I did a fresh install like i described above and have a basic desktop system with fglrx running using the onboard hd3000 chip on the GBT780G, so i will try the phoronix-test-suite now.

Yep, I hear constant cyle of small knight rider type "sirens" and clunks when the drive starts![]()
Hehe, unfortunately, no, because he's not here and I don't have permission to go to the relevant department.
Plus I'm not allowed services that are government funded, like that, since they're all officials.
Anyway, having some fun with the 4450e now
I have 7 drives, 12 OSes on them and 5 system builds to sort out at night, not looking forward to it![]()
Damn so much work to do, so many reboots and builds needed.
I'm returning the M2R BTW, it won't boot 9850 but I tried 4450e hour back and it didn't even boot that either. I'm very fed up now of all the hassles.
BTW, just lost another 3 week old drive. It seems to only happen because of the P35 MB, when you have both SATA and PATA connected, the SATA gets killed off.![]()
If this is true i am surprised we all missed it and I tested 1.4 and 1.41.Not sure if someone mentioned it but the "newest' (1.4) BIOS regulates NB speed instead of HT,so setting "HT ratio" in bios, actually sets the NB speed, and HT stays at default, but can be changed in windows with AOD
is anyone here on 1.4 or 1.41 and able to test this with a 9850?
Got a problem with your OCZ product....?

Can you set max async with wpcre or some other prog.?
What I meant was is it better to do two high density sticks in two slots or 4 lower density sticks in 4 slots.
I broke it up into 4gb and 8gb total as I'm not sure how much ram I want at the moment.
Thanks for answering KTE.![]()

Yep, you can change it with AOD and Memset
The only study I've seen about MEM on perf. was by Intel on P4->C2 and the result was very clearly 4x1GB better than 2x2GB. I would prefer that myself.
What about you Tony?
Finally, after so much work, 18 hours non-stop, I managed to get my K10 HD working and restore all its contents!
Just playing, check this:
The Athlon X2 4850e and 4450e [45W], both read whacko core temps, CPUZ does not really recognize them yet.
The GBT 740G also overvolts under load - 1.264v idle -> 1.296v/1.312v load
CPU temp never moves
Core temp idles -1/-7°C at 25°C ambient with no TIM![]()
But BIOS does not read those temps, it reads far better
BIOS reads 31°C with core0 fully loaded
I tested till 93°C BIOS, k-type measuring TCASE was 8-12°C lower than BIOS temp, so that looks perfectly in-line
Anyway, EastyTune5 can access BIOS temps, so thats OK
Problem why I'm ticked is, I can't now run low HSF speed and HSF ramping on demand, since temp is always reading too high or too low in windows!
CnQ is 1G at 1.0v
Does not boot Geil or Crucial 1GB and 2GB 1066 RAM, only booted my Corsair 1GB 800 4-4-4-12
BIOS options are v.good for a £30 board, everything there I need
Boots Phenom 9850BE first BIOS
Stock idle system power draw with onboard is 48W AC -
Stock idle system power draw with onboard and CnQ is 40W AC - 75W AC load
Stock idle system power draw with HD2600XT is 74W AC - 102W AC load
Stock idle system power draw with HD2600XT and CnQ is 58W AC - 78W AC load
Next to try is K9A2 ->
Thank you for the first impression KTE,![]()
I managed to run the phoronix-suit here at the GBT780G+4850e
First results
http://global.phoronix-test-suite.co...9769-6604-7312
You use a 330W Seasonic PSU? I use this one in the 4850e setup also, gonna check power consumption and post results for comparison later.
With M3A+HD2400pro+4850e and The GBT Odin 550 i measured ~45W DC (idle) and 90W DC (load) at stock voltage.
BTW: How did you get the HD running again?
CBid reads those CPU's. See here.

Thanks for that Achim
I have some problem to sort out yet before testing, HD2100 reads 57MHz core clock instead of 400MHz
What does yours read in GPU-Z?
And when I load it, the GPU that is, i.e. a game, it always freezes the system and monitor switches off. Me thinks its drivers, I still have Catalyst drivers on.
Did you install Cat drivers or use chipset drivers only?
Funnily, it can use Cat drivers if you install them although a little unstable
Totally forgot about that awesome tool! Yeah it works, can change many settings and it reads the Current register per core too [documented]!

BTW in the above power tests there were 4x 80GB WD SATA II HDs attached, I need to do a lot of data rescuing and movement yet.
I'll try setting up the system to run the Test Suite. Can you do me a favor and run an all stock 3DMark'06 please?
I'm trying to see if my GFX is running full speed or underclocked.
Yep, I have the Seasonic here but I'm using an Antec Earthwatts 430W with the 740G build yet. I can use the Seasonic if you want?

Had to finish the winxp install first. (Hmm grub2 does not set the start partition for windows correct must be hd(0,1) not hd(0,0).)
I use CAT 8.4 drivers, all other drivers came from driver packs on my install cd (few month old).
780G comes with HD3200 but here is the 3DMark06 result.
GBT780G - 4850e 2.5GHz - HD3200
1213/396/462/1901
CPU Temp reading is not correct here and if i set cpu voltage to auto the bios uses 1.25V. I have not yet updated the bios.
Here are screenshots with my settings (idle/load).
CPU-Z(idle): 1.264-1.280V
CPU-Z(load): 1.312V
Would be nice if you can test power consumption with the Seasonic once for better comparison.
I use 4x1GB G.Skill FS-6400CL4GBHK (4-4-3-5), one WD500ABYS RE2 hd and no cdrom (have only one here which is attached to my Sapphire setup atm).
Case has one ~10cm fan.
EDIT: I wrote an email to GBT support about these voltage and temperature issues.

Thanks man.
Have you tried clocking 4x1GB and 2x2GB kits with Phenom? Which did better?
Thank you Achim, check mine![]()
Big difference, SM3.0 and SM4.0 not supported.
Plus my GPU looks like its very underclocked, its not even playing very old SM2 games properly. Games I get 152FPS with HD2600XT, it gives me 22FPS in maximum and 12FPS average.
OK, I'll test with the Ss but Ss will give lower power than the Antec and Gigabyte PSUs because it has better low power efficiency and less Standby/hibernate power draw.CPU Temp reading is not correct here and if i set cpu voltage to auto the bios uses 1.25V. I have not yet updated the bios.
Here are screenshots with my settings (idle/load).
CPU-Z(idle): 1.264-1.280V

I was curious about onboard graphic results so I ran 3DMark06 on four different Systemsalso added our previous results:
Fujitsu Siemens Amilo M1425 - Pentium M 725 1.6GHz - ATI Mobility Radeon 9600
348/163/NA/686
HP6715 - Turion TL-58 1.9GHz - ATI Radeon 1250
330/152/NA/1406
M2A-VM - BE2400 2.3GHz - ATI Radeon 1250
320/147/NA/1725
IBM Thinkpad R61 - Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz - Mobile Intel 965
501/153/193/1801
GBT780G - 4850e 2.5GHz - HD3200
1213/396/462/1901
GBT740V - 4450e 2.3GHz - HD2100
317/145/NA/1756
Note: M2A-VM shows 57MHz for the GPU also, the Turion Notebook with the same gfx chipset shows a correct frequency.I used 8.4 CAT on both 1250 systems.
